I'm yet in awe of the wonder and the splendor of our God. The anointing and humility of one Elder Derrick Jackson is without measure. I see the anointing of God resting back into the church. Not through songs but through minstrels. Usher in His presence.

Dude you right....I try to get people to realize this. When I sat under Derrick he expressed to me the importance of those things you just described. Derrick used to practice 5 hours a day when he was in College. A lot of modern day musicians have a problem with studying other musicians. Somehow they feel they will lose themselves, when in actuality its how you actually find yourself. You have to have some type of idea of how you want to hear.

@Timothy Orr...your wrong man. That is Marvin's style. He tells musicians NOT to hold back their gift when he sings. There is no reason to. I've heard Marvin sing with many other musicians live and he loves it when musicians go off. Derrick is the best. Plus , Derrick knows when to play crazy and when to dial back. Trust me man. The best musicians know how to do this. He didn't over play at all. He simply played what he felt and also played the way Marvin wanted him to.

I forgot Marvin was singing about 12 times. They may as well retire that piano now; it's ruined for anyone else! Derrick Jackson, of my indirect mentors.

We're not mistaken! I know him personally. He doesn't practice any particular song. He's always playing at a church or for some church venue. That is his "practice" I guess. I've asked him that question before. What he told me was he doesn't practice any particular song. When you've been playing as long as he has, you just know the keys like the back of your hand. He can play perfectly in every key. No transpose. Believe me! He is that anointed!

He's not super human. The difference is that he does not mind learning the real stuff..Advanced theory, playing in all keys (major, minor) studing Baroque, Classical, romantic, ect...practicing Hanon and Czerny, analyzing Classical (counterpoint), studying other musicians (classic and modern). I know someone is going to say...stop hating, because hes super human and he does not practice lol. The very best ever practiced (Art Tatum, Charlie Parker 16 days). Lets stop awwing and practice.

Honestly, I was dissappointed that Marvin didnt just stick to the melody. It's "center of my joy". At Marvin's level, how do you get lost? Derrick has actually played for Smallwood before and he maintained the meat of the song.
