Don't sleep on his sister Barbara. Sleeps a whole b problem as well. I personally love the stewardship they've displayed in Memphis via the Jackson studios over the years.

I recall once a guy struggling following a singer playing in the key of G Major during a funeral. Derrick slides on and kills not even trying. DUDE! I forgot I was even at a funeral! His placement and voicing choices was unreal. This man is an amazing Talent! He's truly anointed indeed.

Derrick and my mother went to school together. He played at her funeral this past January. Legendary as usual. The maestro himself. He's affected all of our playing in modern gospel music. He and Ralph lofton created the changes and voicings we all use to this day 🎹😁

Great job you're doing, Sean. When you asked if the chord could fit in there, I knew the E13 would fit in there and the basis is tritone substitution. Varieties of Bb dominant chords are secondary dominant chords that resolve to Eb minor chords (in Db major and other keys like Gb and Cb). So, tritone substitution really allows us to replace Bb dominant chords with E dominant chords. So, I knew the E13 would replace that diminished chord. Cos the diminished chord was implying a Bb7b9 harmony. If the E in the E13 is replaced with a Bb note, you'll have a chord that sounds like the Bb7(#9,b5) -- an altered chord.

I was a student at Jackson Studios back in the late 90's when derrick was still teaching, I was like 15. He is legendary. Every good "keys" musician that has come out of Memphis in some form was touched and influenced by Derrick in some way. That's what makes a legend, not how good they are, but how many they touch and inspire, because that will be here even after they are gone. #Legendary
