natural needs to stop being synonymous with "good". sure some things are better for you if they are natural, but this dosen't apply to everything. natural foods? sure, much better than highly processed foods. it just isn't a universal sentiment, poison ivy is natural, you shouldn't be putting that on your skin. death is natural, dosen't mean you should be willing to throw yourself into risky situations all the time. in skincare alone many things are natural and yet people are allergic, or they just aren't good for your skin.

I asked her what I ought to use instead. Her reply, "Baking powder." I didn't tell her that baking powder HAS baking soda because what's the point? All she knows is people don't use baking powder for cleaning. Also, "natural" isn't necessarily safe. Poison ivy is 100% natural but salicylic acid is not. We’re not here to get into in place of personally seeing a dermatologist about our concerns but to learn since the whole “beauty influencer” era has really delivered so much misinformation to audiences for years now on this platform. And it may not be all influencers, some do share from professionals or their own researchers, but nothing tops the professional experience and knowledge of a doctor in these fields. So really, thank you.

I must admit, I was definitely part of the "non-toxic" community for a while, and I think my journey down that path began as a response to the insane cost of healthcare in the US and this mentality of, "Everything is out to get us." It wasn't until I started listening to scientists (and dropping ridiculous amounts of money for "clean" versions of the same products I used before) that I stopped being afraid. I use products with parabens, glycols, silicones, etc. and my skin has never been better. My only wish is that more conventional products would have more eco-friendly packaging or refillable packaging, but I know due to certain actives that might not always be feasible. Gwyneth Paltrow and the messages she sends on videos like these and on Netflix are dangerous. Thank you for speaking out and educating us all.

Great post! I consider myself quite well informed now (because I’ve literally gone out and done just that), and even still I feel that initial, panicked “what?” feeling when I read things that come from that community. They’re so convincing sometimes, which is of course why people believe them. And I totally agree with the packaging thing, but I believe we’ll see more of that coming! A company (that ironically probably falls under “clean” branding, except their objective is on refillable/environmentally friendly packaging and informing the consumer by being forthcoming, plus being a good choice for sensitive skin) in my country has created a refillable deodorant that actually is just a “normal” deodorant. They will have both aluminum and aluminum-free versions, you buy the shell and just buy refills. The refill ones I’d seen previously have been alu-free, and for a lot of us that isn’t the right one. So I believe some brands are trying. Ren are doing a lot on packaging from what I can tell. While still believing in and championing science. Hopefully more will come! I’m so glad you informed yourself and so glad your skin is doing well! Happy skin is so important for our well-being. ❤️

I really noticed a difference when I stopped using essential oils in my products. I hate that all the reusable packaging companies are also ‘clean’ and ‘natural’. Another thing I wanted to add is that the dose makes the toxin. Therefore anything can be toxic. But i’m hopeful and I can already see a change in the skincare industry so I hope that continues.

@RothysOOTD well that's not entirely true. Celebs are just ppl, some are more educated or in touch than others. Just like regular ppl, some are absolute morons, some aren't. Gwen is for sure out of touch, but she isn't a reflection of ALL celebs. It's about discernment when deciding who to listen too, celeb or not.

Please watch "Chasing Coral" about how environmental issues are bleaching coral and therefore destroying homes of sea life. Chemical sunscreens are damaging to coral reefs. I use mineral, 30 spf is a great number to be at. Look into the science behind the difference in 30 and 40 and 50spf the difference is about 1%. Oxybenzone and octinoxaten, found in chemical sunscreens, can kill coral and damage coral reefs and are dangerous to algae, sea urchin, fish and other life around coral.
