Derek Does Pikes Peak - The Carmudgeon Show with Cammisa and Derek from ISSIMI Ep. 59

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This week, Jason drives Derek’s Lamborghini Miura - which, as it turns out, is a vehicle that most commonly enjoys flirting with its own death by fire, inclement weather, or just modern day traffic. Jason and Derek discuss the car’s other difficulties, including but not the mystery of non-standardized interior button labels, glowworms for headlights, and windshield wipers which prefer to eject versus function. Conclusion: like so many other beautiful things, it's high-maintenance.
The main focus of this episode, however, is Derek’s recent trip to Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a journey not traveled without some difficult weather, 3 AM traffic jams, and many flavors of Porsche 911 Turbo eating up the elevation. Despite some unique challenges in Derek’s adventure, he luckily did not get struck by lightning.
This eventually leads to an extended discussion on Mobil 1 oil and some discoveries Derek made while talking to an oil engineer atop Pike’s Peak. Jason and Derek explore differences in oil weight, detergents, anti-foaming agents, modifiers, and more magic that lubricates our engines. Oil change intervals and oil analysis also come into play - sometimes a scary Blackstone result isn't as worrisome as you might initially believe.
Jason also revisits his findings on the new Acura Integra and Honda Civic SI, and uncovers why ultimately there is more to the $7,000 price gap than initially meets the eye. Jason and Derek also discuss a recent spin in an original DC2 Acura Integra Type R, a car whose mass alone dictates how much the Integra nameplate has changed in 25 years.
All this and more, brought to you by the Hagerty Podcast Network.

There's actually a couple Ford cars (s550 chassis GT350/500s, Focus RS, & the current gen GT) that all spec 5w-50 oil as standard. The 5.0L Mustangs also recommend using 5w-50 for extreme performance/supercharged applications over the stock 5w-20/30 oil.

Jason talking about the ITR reminded me of a guy in my hometown in Michigan who put almost 180k on a ITR as his daily before "upgrading" to a AP2 S2k. His car was sold to a local Acura dealer owner who, last I knew, was doing a complete restoration on the car. Legend.

I went on a big road trip in my (now departed) MKVII GTI in April 2021. Pike’s Peak was one of my big destinations. It was closed up above 12,500 feet. It was such a great experience, with the 2.0T you can really feel the lack of power above 10,000 feet. What was really interesting was feeling the difference of power when the turbo isn’t really active vs higher RPM. The GTI is the ultimate road trip car, especially paired with the Vredstein Quatrack Pro tires I had. They’re an incredible All Weather tire that holds the road well enough when driving enthusiastically, yet is extremely capable in snow. They’re also good for 50,000 miles. I feel that a big National Park Tour road trip is something every car person needs to do.

The Diesel Performance podcast has had folks from Amsoil and HotShot Secrets on explaining a lot of what you guys talked about and more regarding oil. Also, there is supposed to be a new standard coming out in a few years. The biggest contributor to oil longevity is filtration, and maintaining your TBN. If both of those are met, the oil can go great distances between change intervals.

I've never been to Pikes Peak but since 2007 I've been going to the Trento-Bondone, which is my local hillclimb and is comparable to PPIHC in age (since 1925) and size (17.3 km/10.75 mi in length, 1,350 m/4,430 in elevation gain, ~180 corners). Thankfully the weather is much less extreme and it's easier to reach the various parts of the track. There is a wide variety of cars, both modern and historic. You'll find vehicles from WRC, DTM, F3000 etc. but there is no "unlimited" category like Pikes Peak.

Just to add to the oil discussion, multigrade oil doesn't get 'thicker' when it heats up. Taking 10w30 as an example, the 10 and the 30 are measured differently so the 10 is still thicker. I don't remember all the nuances but basically they're measured from different temperatures. The point of multigrade oil is just so that a 50 weight oil doesn't have the consistency of tar when it's left overnight in lower temps. The reason many people in vintage racing use SAE 50w oil instead of multigrade is partly because they don't care about start-up (where most engine wear occurs, due to thick oil taking longer to circulate), and also because multigrade can thin out or degrade if repeatedly exposed to extreme temperatures and pressures, particularly if the two grades are very far apart (like 5w50). A single grade synthetic is much more robust. Also many modern engines use such thin oil partly because of clearances, but also because thicker oil causes more drag and reduces engine efficiency slightly which contributes to increased emissions. It works fine for most applications, but can be fatal. BMW (among others) has had issues with engines seizing when driven hard due to the high temperature causing the tiny bearing clearances to close up and squeeze out the thin oil. Looser clearances with a nice, thick oil leaves a lot more expansion room in extreme conditions (such as racing), but then you may get more oil escaping past the rings and burning when running at lower temperatures. It's always a balancing act.

The stories about Michelle Moutons first and second race at pikes peak are just epic. (Comming second in the first try with injection problems and Fabrizia Pons on the pasenger seat, and the Audi engineers calcualting that with the weight reduced by the little of the codriver weight, she would have won... And then the whole "she isn't allowed to drive outside of the race" where the mechanics had to push her in the car to the startline ect. in the second attempt wheres she won overall and was setting a record.) But to me as a european W. Röhrls race there also is iconic. Winning and setting a new record in his first attempt!

Jason: About oil weight and 0w20... Several common motors/vehicles have very different recommendations in different markets. The EA888 which almost every application in the US recommends 0w20, over seats there are recommendations for 5w30. The Subaru FA20 is the same, especially with the WRX and BRZ where in Japan they actually recommend 5w30 instead of 0w20. If you are in a warmer climate (like here in Cali and not going up to the snow in the winter) running the 5w30 is a smart idea.

I think you are misexplaining oil viscosity. A 10-30 acts like a 10 weight when it and rhe 10 weight are cold. It acts like a 30 does at temp. If you graphed each oils viscosity against temp you would have two basically parallel curves for the 10 and the 30 with the 10-30 crossing both at the respective Temps. As to modern low oil viscosity recommendations... smaller clearances sure but iirc stuff like DoD or the chrysler version thereof won't work with thicker oils.

Yes, it's off through the whole episode. The content is worth it, so just have it on in the background.

Stop mentioning the focus when the audio is out of sync and is actually preventing people from watching it!

Actually, the Broadmoor was built by Spencer Penrose, who made his money in mining in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and in Utah. Penrose was a major poobah in the Springs and many things in town are names after him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Penrose
