As a former freight conductor replaying this has given me that feeling i had being out in the yard and on the rails, i loved those times being out there for those 12 hour work days because i was doing something i genuinely enjoyed doing, very few games have given me that nostalgia.

I'm curious. Did you usually feel that way at the time? Or is it more of a nostalgia? If the former then that's awesome! Very few people get to find the thing they can enjoy that much and make a living from. It makes me happy anytime I hear of someone who was able to find that for themselves.

@@fictionfreeway Oh no it was all the time, i woke up happy to go to work, even if it was 3am and cold and raining i loved every minute of it, this does a pretty good job of replicating the conductor and RCO part of it, i cant say the engineering part though since i never was in long enough to be one.
I really hope this gives Dovetail a competitor. They have a major monopoly and we can all agree that their business practices suck, especially in regards to DLC. Incredible video as always Jeff!

It totally is... and they even hired Zeibach from the community who made some substantial mods to Overhauled adding a lot of realism changes that now went into Simulator :)
17:00 Small FYI, a huge benefit of the DH4 is that it doesn't rely on passive cooling like the DE2. Rather than a front-mounted radiator it has an extractor fan on top of the long hood, which automatically cuts in when the temp gauge approaches the yellow section. Above and to the left of said gauge is a blue lamp, which lights up when the fan is active, and you can also hear it running. For this reason speed and facing don't affect the DH4's cooling as it does on some others. I'm currently running a trio of them in a consist and the temps are always the same across all three, including the one running in reverse :)
@lsswappedcessna

Hopefully you're bringing in enough cash to fund those beasts. The DH4 absolutely guzzles diesel.
Worth mentioning that shunting has a purpose other than just playing around in the yard for a small profit: When you bring loads in there will be a follow-on shunting mission to unload and store the cars, and then typically another shunting mission to prep and reload the cars, which in turn gives you a follow-on haul mission to take the load to another station. Sometimes the cars won’t be reloaded but instead taken to another station empty, and those are your logistical haul missions. Just another thing this game does masterfully, no cars are generated or disappear, ever. They all get loaded, unloaded, and moved over and over again. They’ll also get separated out or joined together as required.
@20:24 No the blue light is the active cooling system featured by that loco. It turns on automatically and helps cool down because you've reached the warning temperature. You can even hear it. You can also hear the air compressor when it turns on.
Derail Valley is about to show dovetail how it’s done. Nice.

Rightttttttt........ I agree.
This is incredible 😍 I love how the horn even has the doppler effect as the train passes by on the outside view.
im not sure on this loco. But for the Q class, S class and LZ class locos that I work on daily, we close the brake petcock on the loco side and ease away making a break, leaving the wagon side open so there isnt any bottled air. (Air is required to disengage the brakes, leaving it open means the brakes are engage all the time) It'll be cool to see if this game simulates bottled air and if it does, to see a wagon have a roll away. Awesome content as always Jeff!
@milkymoocowmoo
Жыл бұрын
It does! For fun I've done a few drive-by drop offs where I step out and close the air circuit at the loco, then undo the coupler. As soon as the air hose disconnects the wagons come to a screeching halt.
The part of this update that just made my day was standing in the service shed while its raining. The sound is so realistic i stood there for a while just enjoying it.
I am super impressed at how far this game has come. I played the original demo when it first came out, and even then was blown away at how immersive it was, and how you really felt the enormous weight you were pulling around. And the thing that impressed me the most, was when I got a string of cars rolling up at the top of the map then disconnected from them, then raced down the other side to get back to the main yard at the southern end. As I was hooking up cars in the yard, I saw some movement in the distance, and it was my string of cars that had rolled under their own inertia all the way back down the hill to the starting area.
We all wanted a detail and Jeff didn't disappoint.
It’s always great to see you play simulator games that are either new or ones where it’s been awhile since you’ve played them such as this. Hope you have a great night Jeff, have a great weekend and take care!

Have a great weekend Jared!
I really wouldn't be opposed to seeing more videos about this; even though I'm not the biggest fan of simulators, the detail in this one was really cool to see. Honestly, I would love to see more Sandbox Mode stuff just for the utter carnage.
Can't wait to hopefully see more of this; I played it a bit since I didn't have the space for train sim world and it is the most fun I've had while still being realistic
Train Simms and Videos always make me feel closer to my Late Grandfather when I watch them because he was a Section Hand with What is now Norfolk Southern back in the late 30's to the late 60's to early 70's when he retired. He used to take me to the Spencer Shops to watch switching and train repairs. He died when I was 8 years old. Miss Him dearly

Much love
would be cool if American Truck simulator went into that much detail
Tip: first thing to get after the shunting license would be the remote control. saves time and makes shunting easier. Tip: Even tho the DE6 is no longer compatable with the remote, you just need to couple a DE2 or a DH4 with the multiple unit cable (DE2 or DH4 doesn't need to run) and you can now use the DE6 with the remote
@milanstevic8424
Жыл бұрын
You no longer need the remote control, if you play on Standard, thanks to external view and quality of life train controls. But still nothing wrong with the remote control, it works with DE2 and DH4. And someone told me you can MU DE6 with DE2 and get it to work as well (devs removed RC support for DE6).
A cool mod for this game is Derail Valley Remote Dispatch. It allows you to have a railroad dispatch-esque screen pulled up in your browser that can interface with the game and allow you to check switches and even change them and control locomotives if you set the mod to allow it. You can even pair it with your phone or have a friend (or yourself) running it on a separate screen or laptop on a LAN connection, or even over a distance if you set up port-forwarding. Useful for getting your switches lined properly AND fits in with realistic mode!
I'd like to thank you Jeff for showing this game off, I've been looking for a train simulator for a long time and this one ticks all the boxes from the interation of individual train carts, the train themselves, open world interaction and how realistic it all is. After watching it I immediately paid full price for it and played it 4 hrs straight n was hooked! Thank you again and keep up your awesome work!!
This game is amazing in VR. You will not be disappointed.
The developers should be super proud of what they’ve managed to create. One of my all-time favorite games. Also I thought of Aunt Bethany too when the tankers were blowing up 😂
The sounds are amazing. I closed my eyes for a second and it was almost as if i was watching a train go by.
Video games are pretty special they can give you a realistic experience in a new job without starting a new life.
Fun fact I got to drive an operate a train similar to that in the army a couple weeks ago it was the time of my life crossed that off my bucket list an made me enjoy trains that much more! Thank you for this amazing video jeff! Appreciate you an hope all is well with you an Nicole!

Was it a diesel-hydraulic? Those are pretty damn rare, especially if you happen to be in the US. You're a lucky man.
Locomotive engineer here this game is very well done. This is fairly accurate at what it does i'm ready for the American DLC
Jaw dropped when you lit the fuel at the end! What a fun game! More please Jeff :)
Love the videos jeff!
just as a note Jeff, the Oil Temp gauge on the DH4 you were using, is technically the "Transmission fluid temp" for the hydraulic transmission used in the locomotive that operates similar to an automatic transmission on a car
This always was a great game but they've taken it to a whole new level now. I love it.
Cool Doppler effects when train passes in outside view. Looks like a really good sim.
I definitely want to see more of this Jeff...thank you champ!
Just love it, love to see more.
Definitely wanna see more of this buddy keep up the great work brother
ty youre the first person that really shows the stuff in a simulator that we care about!!!! This vid was helpful
I've been playing DV for a couple of years now but this simulator update is AWESOME! It still has a few things the devs need to work out and I'd like to see a few minor features added, but overall, I'm impressed and it has become my favorite casual sim game of late. And don't even get me started on how fantastic it is in VR! 😍

The only thing needed to be added there is a modding support and location editor.
Hope to see lots more content Jeff...this was awesome 💯
I see you're also a DH4 fan! The DM3 is a pretty good upgrade from the DE2 as well. No remote control, but it can pull like 500 tons. I took a train of excavators all the way from Machine Factory up to Iron Mine East with it.
@jorisvanhandenhove5865

the DE2 can haul ass if you just put an extra engine on the consist. You don't even need multiple unit to do that just need to manage multiple engines at the same time.
25:00 on the topic of the brake pipe guage, the white needle is how much pressure is in the tanks and lines, the red needle is in simple terms, is how much braking force is being applied to the wheels.
Would love to see more of this 👍🏻 keep up the good work bro
Greatest sales job EVER! I need Derail Valley. Thank you for this video.
Love your content keep it up
This has changed a lot since early access! Kudos to them as this looks awesome!
Jeff, this was really cool. Fits your style perfectly as well. You explain things so good and do an awesome job of keeping it realistic. A career mode series would be truly awesome. Thanks for the video, Jeff!
wow - i really enjoyed this video. first time viewer. you're a natural at this
"No damage was made to Derail Valley property *or the environment*" "We'll just chuck that in the trash..." 😆
Awesome video Jeff YES I would LOVE to see more of this! especially the steam engine. Great video as always.
You know it's a good week when Jeff uploads once and again the next day can you do one where you crash realistically
14:15 operator error: Since you're doing the coupling yourself, you have to check that ALL the brake lines are connected between all the cars before you pull away. Never assume ;) But having to look down to click all the controls is the opposite of realistic. You're supposed to be able to drive a train "blind", without looking at what handle you're pulling
Love the finish .. doesn't matter what game you play you always make me laugh keep it up very funny :)
Love your videos Jeff

Just started this game and love it so far. Hoping you’ll be making more content of this game in the future!
Very good! Thanks for sharing!
This game is awesome, especially after this huge game changing patch. Way to go devs :D If you love any train sim related games this one should be in top priority to get thanks to realism it has to offer. Other train sim games are just mostly cash grabs (train sim world 3 for example where dlc cost more than base game) and you just drive straight without any accidents, with almost always green light on line. Here you have to think twice if you gonna haul something without issues.

Typically when decoupling you would close the air valve on the locomotive but leave it open on the cars and just pull away to split the lines. The air needs to leave the cars for the emergency brakes to apply. By closing the valve, the cars keep their air pressure and the brakes are technically released, which could cause them to roll away (yes I know you applied the handbrake). But for full simulation, that’s the process.
@pieter3525
11 ай бұрын
Not sure where you learned that, but when you decouple, the brakes are already applied enough to prevent the cars from rolling away. which would mean that there would be 0.8-1.5 bar pressure applied/ blown out on the system already. No need to deflate the whole line. makes no sense. It only costs more time to inflate it all again.
Hey Jeff, love this game! If you go to one of the shops, i think in MF not sure, you can by a radio controller for your locomotives, its great for shunting. You can stand on the back cart when moving backwards and so on. We use those controllers in real life when shunting 😁 Great work, keep it up!
I bought Derail Valley when I saw that it was playable in VR, and even though it doesn't work too well with Air Link, it is still one of the most fun games I've ever played in VR.
Gotta see more of this game! Pretty cool!
hey jeff i think its still a thing that if you press alt you have cursor mode so you don't have to move the whole camera! love the vids hope to see more of them coming
I love your vids and content!
Definitely would like to see some more of this. Hopefully it’s a thing on the channel for at least a few episodes
Hi Jeff I love your content and can't wait for another Storm Chasers video!
Wow, if this gets uk routes and trains I’m in, looks and performs better than dovetail’s sim from what I’ve seen so far. Great stuff.
This is turning into a vicious cycle: Jeff does a video/walkthrough on a game I buy the game Repeat. Been binging Storm Chasers lately, this might be the next one.
You can manually click on the switches if you're close to them as well. You don't need to use the radio if you walk up to it.
Wonderful overview!
Would love to see more of this game!
Love your videos
This looks great! I didn't expect that much detail in this game, even the explosions caught me off guard! I am definitely curious about the steam engine locomotives. Two reasons: I'd like to see a normal run where you deliver the cargo without incidents (same as in this video), but I'd also like to see if the crashes/explosions are any different with a steam engine instead of a diesel engine. One thing that steam engines are known for: overloading the engine with too much coal, causing the engine to explode from the excessive amounts of power.
Lol, the ending was pretty cool Jeff.
Reminds me of working on a film, where we modeled a CG railroad, but didn't get the right to use the trademark of the company we were copying, so we had to come up with an alternate name and a logo. We made a fictional French shipping company called "De Rail".
Was wondering when you were gonna try this out on the channel. Love this game its really came a long way!
Hey Jeff loved the video!
I've just started playing Derail Valley last night, it somehow slipped under my radar. I must say that's it's a great mix of enjoyable, challenging and realistic game mechanics. I'm loving it.
I need to play the new updated version. I had a blast with the beta. Great video, Jeff!
I like using the latern in the cabs. Lighting looks much better than using cab lights
You might really like Sailwind, a sailing cargo/trading simulator. Really nice feeling sailing mechanics and just very relaxing. One of my favourite games in development right now.
Thank you, Mr. Favignano.
Very nice demonstration
I love how that engine in the beginning totally isn't a german DB V100 / 212. As a child in the 90ies I've seen these locos shunting around flatcars loaded with american tanks more than often. Ahh ,the memories. 😂
@lsswappedcessna
8 ай бұрын
it even works like the German DB locos. The DBs had three torque converters between the prime mover and the differential that runs to the bogies, and each one has a different torque multiplication ratio. If you pay attention to the engine noise and tach while driving the DH4, you'll notice it shifting between the different ratios as the engine speed will drop momentarily but the turbine speed (which is measuring the speed of the last converter's output turbine iirc) will hold steady. Also, the DE6 has transitions just like an American diesel-electric locomotive. They put so much attention to detail into this game that they didn't even need to bother with, but it's appreciated regardless.
That was cool. I'm not even really into trains but it made me want to buy this game, I'm always looking for cool VR experiences. One question though; in the derailment, why were the brakes glowing? You were intentionally derailing, so I assumed you didn't have the brakes on at all right?
Great explanation and coverage of the simulator!❤
