Der Untergang (Downfall) Deleted Scene - Russians in the Bunker

This is a deleted scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, Johannes Hentschel, a technican who stayed in the bunker to took care of the generators, comes out of Führerbunker and looks around. He sees the remains of Hitler and Eva Brown's burned bodies. He also sees the dead bodies of Josef and Magda Goebbels. When he came back in, he also passes by the dead bodies of General Krebs and Burgdorf, who had shot themselves. Johannes encounters a group of Soviet female medics. They ask Johannes where are Hitler and his wife, and Johannes tells them that they are dead. They also ask where are the clothes, and Johannes says he will show them. He stops one of the soldiers from opening a door. Another soldier opens it and she witnesses Goebbels' children's dead bodies. She looks at Johannes with surprise and a bit of anger in her face, and Johannes leads the women to Eva Braun's room. The women scream with joy with the clothes.

(Subtitles are available in English and Korean.) (영어와 한국어 자막 사용 가능합니다.) Johannes Hentschel stayed in the bunker until the end to look after the generators which were supplying electricity, air and water to the medical bunkers under the Reich Chancellery. By May 2nd, Johannes Hentschel and Rochus Misch, a radio operator, were only people staying in the bunker. They exchanged letters to their wives in case anything happens to them. Then Rochus Misch left the bunker and Johannes became the last person to stay in the bunker. He surrendered to the Soviets when they entered the bunker. He was in captivity until he was released in 1949. Hentschel died in Achern, 1982.

According to Hentschel, many of the Soviet women soldiers spoke rather broken, Yiddish-influenced German, suggesting that they were Jews. One however spoke German well and she actually asked "Wo sind die Klamotten?", "Klamotten" being a rather colloquial German expression for "clothes".

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE In WW1 there had been a stereotype in the German and Austro-Hungarian armed forces that a Russian POW who spoke German was likely to be a Jew. For many Jews, standard German was merely a higher-prestige form of the Yiddish they might have spoken at home (there was a tendency to see Yiddish as "jargon" rather than as a proper language). This was sometimes carried over into WW2. At least one Soviet junior officer who broadcast propaganda in German over a microphone during WW2 was Jewish and her original language was Yiddish. At the end of the war, many Germans found that Western Allied troops, especially US and Canadians, who could communicate in German were frequently Jews although in a number of cases they were German-Americans.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE The Soviet women soldiers didn't speak the "Yiddish-influenced German". They clearly spoke Hochdeutsch, but with a heavy Slavic accent. And yes, most of the German teachers in the USSR were Jews, and they usually taught the students not the foreign-sounding "official" German accent, but rather the "Yiddish-like accent", because it was closer in pronunciation to the Slavic languages. But the language itself was definitely High German, not Yiddish.

You have any idea what the Soviets would do to the children of a high NatSocialist Party official like Goebbels? You know what the Soviets would do to his _daughters?_ Poisoning those children was a mercy; the number of little girls, sometimes as young as 3-4, who died of abdomin-pelvic hemorrhaging was staggering...as were the pregnancies grape babies. He was keeping the generator going that powered the field hospital in the Reich Chancellory building. Later a group of boozed up male Soviet troops appeared full of international solidarity and told him he would be a valuable expert worker back in Mother Russia. The party mood changed when a Commissar tried to open Hitler's study door which apparently had been torched and Hentschall tried to stop him as he feared the fire wasn't out. They became so desensitized and vengeful (not without reason) that they often watched and laughed as their colleagues gang-raped German women. And before you dismiss me as trumpeting a myth, I am well aware that such actions were NOT universal amongst Soviet troops: elite troops tended to maintain discipline, whereas most war crimes were committed by rear-echelon soldiers after they got drunk. Not this one. The film indeed contained a number of glaring inaccuracies and scenes which condensed events in a manner and order in which they never occurred. This scene from start to finish is a complete fiction, the crater containing Hitler and Braun's partly incinerated remains was not left unfilled and the first Soviet personnel to enter the Fuhrerbunker were all males. These inaccuracies are why it was in fact omitted.

I was skeptical of this scene, why would female troops be the first into the Fuhrerbunker when they were not used in the fighting in the final days of the Battle of Berlin? But then I researched and found that an all female unit whos primary task was traffic management entered the bunker through an emergency exit in the chancellery garden. The second group was a a team of medics trained in German to treat German wounded. There's always something new to learn about the greatest conflict in human history.

So idiotic, and gross. The last thing Russian female soldiers would have wanted in April-May 1945 was even the mere sight of a German man making a move at them. They were not only the enemy, they had conducted a war of extermination in Russia, committing countless atrocities in the millions on soldiers and civilians alike on the Eastern Front for 4 straight years. They would have killed him on the spot if he made even a single move, either cross or lewd, in their general direction.

Soviet Medics in WW2 are such an underrated topic, i hope they kept this in just to show the massive participation of Soviet females in Frontlines.. they're are as much of heroes of any other medics during the war, some are ironically could be called true heroes either. reminds me of that one female medic & kindergarten teacher from 252nd Rifle Regiment who defended her unit's trench despite the order to retreat just to kept her wounded comrades safe (mind u, she choose this herself, her commanding officer tell her to retreat), which she died after brutal torture & mutilation by the German advance.

Im obsessed with this part of the war. Shame Hitler and Goebbels never paid for their crimes and took the coward's route. . When a Red Army LT Col came to the bunker shortly after, Hentschel prevented him from opening an door due to an ongoing fire. This was perceived then as Hentschel was involved in attempting to kill the Red Army officer by booby trap. He was arrested and also dressed as a nurse in humilitation, he was given a 10 year sentence but was released in 1949 more likely due to his cooperation with the fanatical Soviet investigation of Hitler's last days and death and that he was not a member of the army.

It's not coward's route. Them committing suicide was on behalf of Germany's interests. And it actually turned out to be good for Germany in the long run. It would've been worse for Germany and Germans had the allies got their hands Hitler and Goebbels. Cold War was already looming around, the distrust among allies was already there prior to Battle of Berlin. And allies already agreed Soviets would take Berlin as well as divide Germany after the war in Tehran 1943. Hitler knew what he was doing. A nation's highest leader/representative gets hanged in front of its own people, that would've been an utter humiliation, the consequences would've been worse. Germany got destroyed in WW2, but unlike WW1, it wasn't a humiliation. Germans fighting till May 1945 turned out to be good for them. Just 3 more years of suffering and then, allies turning on each other and starting the Cold War.
