Der Untergang (Downfall) Extended Scene - Hanna Reitsch and Ritter von Greim's Arrival

This is an extended scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, General Robert Ritter von Greim of the Luftwaffe and Hanna Reitsch, a German aviator who was Ritter von Greim's lover, arrive at Führerbunker. Ritter von Greim was wounded by anti-aircraft fire during the flight, so he gets medical treatment. Hitler greets them with joy, and Hanna Reitsch explains how they were able to fly and arrive through the fierce battlefield. Hitler informs that Göring had betrayed him, and promotes Ritter von Greim as the Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. In theatrical edition, the scene which Reitsch and Ritter Von Greim arriving at the bunker, and Hitler informing that Göring had betrayed were cut out, and it is depicted as Hitler promotes Ritter von Griem while they are eating. In extended edition, Ritter von Greim is promoted while he is getting medical treatment.

(Subtitles are available in English and Korean.) Robert Ritter von Greim and Hanna Reitsch successfully escaped Berlin in a Arado Ar 96 in April 29th, which was the last plane to be flown out of Berlin. They went to Karl Dönitz, who was the successor of Hitler, representing the German Government. Ritter von Greim and Reitsch were captured by the Americans and surrendered. Ritter von Greim said when he surrendered "I am the chief of the Luftwaffe, but it doesn't exist." He was taken to a hospital in Salzburg, Austria. There he learned that he might be transferred to Soviet captivity. He feared this and committed suicide with a poison capsule which was given by Hitler. Hanna Reitsch was released after 18 months of captivity. She settled in Frankfrut, and continued her life as an aviator. She broke many records and died in Frankfrut at the age of 67, in 1979.

Subtitles: Miss Reitsch, instead of saying "from there, we couldn't continue" she explains "from there on getting through on the streets was not possible" (if they couldn't continue, why are they here? ^^). Instead of "However/But, we flew..." she actually says "So we got ourselves a Fieseler Storch and flew directly over the Soviet lines." (maybe they confiscated that plane). Instead of "...not far from here" she says "couple hundreds of meters from here" (which is not that important, it just makes the subtitle even longer).

Interesting fact: The SS officer standing in 1:31 is Ernst-Robert Grawitz, who was an SS physician and was responsible to enormous war crimes as he held experimentations on inmates in Nazi concentration camps. He committed suicide in his house in Babelsberg on the 24th of April, a day before this scene was taking place (as the Subtitles say in 1:19).

I didn't know that! There is a scene in this film which Grawitz commits suicide with his family, but that scene comes after this scene. I didn't know that he committed suicide before this happened. So this scene is inaccurate in actual history. Thanks for letting me know!

When I was at college in Moscow (1987-1990), my social studies group created a theory that Hitler had fled Berlin aboard this plane piloted by Hanna Reitsch. However, in the USSR claiming that Hitler survived was very unpopular. That's why we couldn't get approval to present a formed theory. In fact, at the time, we made a request to contact her family in East Berlin. But no one responded to us.

Today, I'm not sure, but at the time there was a lot of speculation. However, our grandfathers and grandmothers who had fought in the Patriotic War were still alive. And to say that Hitler could be alive too was to undermine their struggle. That's why the dean didn't approve our work, but we did a lot of research. They should all still be there.@@acerld519

I believe even Stalin investigated this theory. The findings were inconclusive. A lot of people today dismiss the idea that AH escaped the bunker at the last minute, but both the US and Soviet governments believed at the time it was a possibility.

I think Grawitz was one of the least accurately portrayed characters here. He didn't look anything like his real counterpart, and although we briefly see him here, he actually killed himself on the 24th, a day before this scene, and well before Hitler found out about Himmler's betrayal, which was after Fegelein's betrayal.
