Depression: Not Just Personal, But Also Neoliberal?

In his new book "Lost Connections," Johann Hari argues that depression is more than a chemical imbalance: it's an illness rooted in the traumas of adverse childhood experiences and an atomized neoliberal society

I've got quite a few things to do this week so I planned on limiting the amount of videos I comment on. But as usual your channels video's are so on point I feel the need to tell you guys once again you nailed it. This grand experiment we've been doing has turned into a nightmare, the hierarchical reality we've created is imploding on itself. We're going to keep doing what we are doing until the pain is to great or we go extinct. Anyone that thinks we have a lot of time to turn this ship around is sadly mistaken.

I agree. The ship analogy is spot on. It takes time to turn a ship. There is also a possibility we will go extinct, because our avarice. Climate Change is not joke. The harvesting we are doing to our oceans. The Great Barrier Reef is dying and if the oceans create oxygen for mammals to breathe, we've got issues. If the United States showed a genuine remorse or concern for it's atrocities against slavery, immigrants and American's born here (Native American's and Japanese Americans), wars, the raping of countries such as the most recent Iraq and Afghanistan and our the destruction of the planet, I would say we have a chance. Believe it or not I try to be an optimistic person. But I'm a realist as well. I do not believe the United States ever had a steady moral compass, unless there was a caveat attached. This country is run by selfish corporate bastards who look at Americans as cattle. Look at what happen with the recent hurricane in Texas. Yeah, the Southern Hospitality allowed women in convalescent homes to sit chest high in water. The people of our country are weak and we have been broken down by corporate America. Corporate America has stagnated wages, so people cannot help the poor. They steal from it's children by making them pay out student loans and then raise the interest rates. There was a time, those of the middle class who could help those with little could. We can't even get a simple definition of the middle class. Humans are as Mr. Smith shared in the Matrix, "I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure."

The Cancer is our worship of death. You've referenced the Matrix in your replies so you know the Matrix was a computer simulation. When you pull away all the layers of the workings of a Computer you end up with an Algorithm based on 0-1. I believe the Algorithm of this Universe is based on Life and Death. When all the layers are removed it's either Life or Death. When my wife had Cancer I had a chance to really study Cancer and what I learned was that it functions in and of it self. The other organs of the body have cells that are a part of that which they are, the cells of a Heart is an example. The Cancer cells mimic the other cells and this is why our defense system doesn't destroy them. The Hierarchical societies we've created over the last six thousand years only mimic life and it's diversity, instead it favors the chosen few, it worships fantasy deities like the Golden Calf or made up superheroes. I'm a soldier that fights for life, I know that in the end death will win but I'm a part of the life, death and then rebirth continuum. I embrace and fight for life because I am the Human expression of life not an organism pretending to be human. I've been fighting all my life and being Black in this country I have no choice, so fighting for comes easy for me. I study Climate Change, Geo-Politics and Economics quite a bit and I believe one of these three things will take us out within the next 3 to 5 years and when it happens the other two will follow. I truly understand what you are saying but this is what I am, I will always take the pill that ensures life and fight for that life.

Excellent conversation. It's good to hear some conclusions that match my own that I've had to form over the years. I wounder what route there is for people like me, though, who have gone from self blaming to realising their lack control and have no way of rectifying that situation because they are or feel cut off by the societies and circumstances they find themselves in.

A really great talk for understanding what this book is saying. The book is really good. Maybe not perfect, but it is a ground-breaker when it comes to changing one's world view and considering what's been going on in our country and world for a much too long time. How much sickness is the injury and trauma from people doing hurtful things to us all our lives? And we think it is all random and just due to someone pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps, when a lot of what is going on is the stomping down of people to make way for the bullies and reinforce the bully syndrome of life.

Thank you Aaron, and thank you so much Johan Hari. The way economics is taught contributes to deficient awareness of social factors and of the importance of the social fabric - even to ignoring the existence of the social fabric. In standard neo-classical economics the 'decision' to 'work' - i.e. to do paid work - is portrayed as a person balancing the benefits (to himself/herself) between 'work/income' and 'leisure'. This completely hides - and devalues - investment in the social fabric which is by far the most frequent alternative use of time, e.g. caring for someone, volunteering to support church activities, etc. Stay at home carers - parent or whoever - is not about a preference for 'leisure'!!! but is instead an important investment in the social fabric - from which everyone derives benefit.

Excellent interview. There are other books supporting the idea of cognitive therapy and successful remission. Feeling Good by David Burns a professor at Stanford Univ., Soteria House by Loren Mosher a psychiatrist, Anatomy of an Epidemic by Whitaker, and two personal accounts by women who escaped severe schizophrenia, The Center Cannot Hold, My Journey Back from Schizophrenia by Elyn Saks, and A Road Back from Schizophrenia by Lauveng. The medical model, using strictly pharmaceuticals or psycho-tropic drugs is short sighted, humans have affective, emotional lives that exert tremendous effects on personality, self-identity and self-confidence. Social, cultural, familiar and personal maladjustment in general can cause pathological results. Sometimes our social standards contradict the personal internal standards, causing incompatibility. All these books emphasize the need for individual engagement and self-management, the importance of self-choice and will to combat self-destruction. Thanks for the interview Aaron M. and Johann Hari

This dude's book is really amazing. I've always thought this. There is no logical explanation as to what depression is *biologically* . There are no real studies that shows they are effective ... and no theory as to how they work, or the theory of how they might work temporarily. A lot of medicines are like this, or the arguments to support their high prices are bogus and a form of corruption. This is all about money, and I wish the author had pushed the political side of this argument to the brink, because basically when you look at the American economy, taxpayers, and workers should be able to *GET* *THEIR* *MONEY* *BACK* - with the main motive of build a new government and economy that actually works and not totally corrupt and criminal.

Excellent, towards the end this ties in very well with what global political Mark Blyth has said; he coined the term 'global Trumpism' to explain the backlash of people in MANY COUNTRIES against the neoliberal policies (predatory capitalism) that have been making life more difficult for DECADES. This is why we must take over from the pathologically greedy who have been running things for so long!

Whoa! Young children who are being traumatized by their family do not make "a choice" to accept that they are living with dangerous people OR to blame themselves so that they can feel empowered. You guys are botching up the psychological dynamic called "the locus of control shift" which is an "automatic" psychological experience. It does leave the child feeling that they have a sense of power but it is also what leaves the child feeling shamed. Colin Ross, MD, explains that when a child is being traumatized by a parent it is like an "evil transfusion"; "all the evil in the predator is infused into the child". This psychological shift leaves the child feeling responsible for the trauma and pain; in other words, evil. The sense of being evil makes it impossible to have healthy connections with other people due to the shame. Licensed trauma therapy enables patients to "reverse" the locus of control shift by putting the blame where it belongs ----- on the predator. The locus of control shift enables the child to attach to abusive parents which is a developmental need. If the child saw that the parent was abusive, the child would not be able to attach. This is how children become scapegoats. The sense of being evil sets people up to join religions that lead them to believe they are evil and can be "redeemed" by various rites, rituals, etc. which do not solve the problem. The locus of control shift is actually what the traditional Jesus on the cross is all about. The evil father is "good" and the innocent "son" becomes evil/takes on the sins of the world and must, therefore, pay the price/death of self.

The author is confusing depression and anxiety which are normal responses to unfortunate circumstances with abnormal depression and anxiety where there are no particular reasons for these and yet a person feels a deep despondency and crippling anxiety. I'm a Christian and believe that psychiatry doesn't really understand these matters because it generally rejects the supernatural and therefore tries to give a natural explanation for phenomena which are in reality caused by evil spirits. This has been falsely demeaned as primitive thinking whereas it's nothing of the sort and accounts for a lot of so called "mental illness".
