Depleted uranium tank shells: Why are they used and how do they work?

The UK is giving Ukraine armour-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium alongside its donation of 14 Challenger 2 tanks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the shells contain "a nuclear component" - a claim the UK said is deliberate misinformation, adding they have been standard equipment for decades and are "nothing to do with nuclear weapons or capabilities".
But what are these shells and how do they work?

Part of the round is vaporized when it passes through the tank armor then flashes into flame inside the vehicle. It's possible to get a harmful dose of uranium but unlikely. Uranium is everywhere, there are 4.6 billion tons of it in solution in the oceans alone. It is also barely radioactive, the main risk is exposure to large amounts of it is toxic to the kidneys. You would have to ingest a lot of uranium for that. Is it possible that someone at some point is going to get sick in Ukraine because of the use of DU rounds. It is certainly much less radioactive than isotopes we are constantly exposed to like Potassium 40 with a half life 1/4 of that. Meaning it is much more radioactive. People are not going to get cancer from the tiny amount of U-238 they are exposed to. A few corrections. As is mentioned DU’s “radioactivity” is highly debated, as what it deemed radioactive and what is simply toxic is a blurred line, as DU is not much more deadly than lead, meaning you can pick it up and hold it with your bare hands with little consequence. Simply being hard does not make a good round, otherwise we’d be making them out of diamond. DU is dense, very dense, though not more so than tungsten on its own, but as an alloy (which is required as pure metal isn’t conducive for a tank round) it is more dense than Tungsten. As for the self sharpening part that is true, but not that Tungsten doesn’t and DU does. A more accurate description is that they both blunt, DU simply blunts much less. They armour isn’t pushed in as much as it is displaced, with only the last bit at the end of the penetration being pushed and scattered throughout the tank. Tungsten does this as well, it isn’t unique to DU. DU is however pyrophoric but only above a certain temperature, this is the most correct part of the video. As side note is that the A-10 does not use a Gatling Gun, which is a very specific model of weapon created by the Mr. Gatling. This is a common error made worse by Hollywood. The technical term is a Rotary Cannon, as opposed to Revolver Cannons used by many European jet aircraft or Recoil Operated Autocannons used by the Russians.

I am writing to express my deep concern about reports that depleted uranium (DU) rounds may be used in the conflict in Ukraine. As an organization committed to promoting international peace and security and protecting human rights, I urge the United Nations to take action to prevent the use of DU ammunition in Ukraine and to prioritize the protection of civilians in any military operations. DU is a byproduct of uranium enrichment and is commonly used in armor-piercing ammunition due to its high density and ability to penetrate through armored vehicles. However, when DU rounds strike a target, they produce a cloud of radioactive dust, which can pose serious health risks to those exposed to it. There is a significant body of scientific evidence demonstrating the potential health risks associated with DU exposure. A recent study published in the journal Environmental Health and Toxicology found that exposure to DU can increase the risk of DNA damage and mutations, which can lead to cancer and other health problems (Kim et al., 2020). Other studies have found that DU exposure can cause respiratory problems, kidney damage, and other serious health effects. Given the potential risks associated with DU rounds, it is essential that all parties to the conflict prioritize the protection of civilians and take all necessary steps to minimize harm to innocent people. I urge the United Nations to work with international organizations and governments to prevent the use of DU ammunition in Ukraine and to ensure that all parties to the conflict are held accountable for any violations of international law or human rights standards. Think the UK still holds the record for the longest tank kill ever at 4.7 kilometers in Iraq in 1991 using a DU round fired from a Challenger 1. DU rounds fired from Challenger 2s in Ukraine are going to be highly effective at long range. These tanks and all the Leopard 2s and Abrams going to Ukraine are going to be force multipliers. They will allow Ukrainians to take out Russian tanks at ranges where the Russians can't shoot back effectively.

@Randy Alvarado They work fine in intense combat, just ask the Iraqis in their T-72s what it was like to face large numbers of M1s and Challenger 1s, the ones that are still alive that is. These tanks have had years to work out the bugs and are proven in some of the harshest conditions possible. Most recently in Afghanistan. And just because something is "highly complex" doesn't mean it won't work or isn't durable. For instance it only takes about 20 minutes to change out the power pack of a Leopard 2. All this equipment was designed to work in battle, you'd have to be delusional to think Russia is the only nation that knows how to make equipment that works in battle. only theirs doesn't or Ukraine wouldn't have captured masses of it including over 550 tanks. And speaking of tanks, Russian auto-loaders are a massive weakness. From the carousel storage that often detonates when the tank is hit to its habit of eating arms. They are definitely over complex mechanisms that are prone to failure. On the other hand western tanks all still use a loader that is faster than the Russian autoloader. And usually store the ammo in armored boxes away from the crew with blowout panels so an ammo cookoff in most cases won't kill the entire crew. How many Russian do you think walk away from "jack-in-the-box" detonations of their tanks? These western tanks are going to be a highly valuable addition to an armed force that is already expert at dealing with Russian opposition no matter what they're in including tanks.

You are actually incorrect, the radioactive level of DU is so low that it is almost harmless assuming you arent putting it directly into someones cells. How ever I am not at all saying that it is ok to use. It is still chemically toxic, although still less than other heavy metals, can still be harmful. People like to single out DU over other things like lead in bullets, all because it is radioactive to a miniscule degree.

Also, according to the NIH, the principal isotope in natural and depleted uranium, 238U, has a long half life (4.5 billion years) and primarily decays by alpha particle emission. Lastly, according to sciencedirect, depleted uranium is composed of 99.8% 238U, 0.2% 235U, and 0.0006% 234U

People talk about the radiation through tank use. The story is totally different if the shells are stored in huge warehouses and the Russians blew up the whole dump causing a high temperature massive fire ball, spreading radiation particles high into the atmosphere. Immediately after the explosions, EU monitored a 40% increase in gamma radiation. Yesterday, Lublin in Poland recorded increased radiation. The radiation is heading towards Berlin. So far, not to the UK, but that depends on wind direction. You can track radiation levels on Internet. Let's hope politicians do not tell lies about this or low ball the gamma radiation danger. Gamma radiation is very dangerous and can penetrate thick concrete. Who in the UK will be held account for this?
