Denzel Washington is an extraordinary actor and an exceptional human being. He and his lovely wife and family are a blessing to the world. Their moral principles are admirable.

This scene stayed in my mind ever since I watched the movie a decade ago. Denzel is so smooth, having a seeming friendly and conciliatory interaction, and then boom, a ruthless throat punch. Same with training day when he was literally ball busting a homeless dude.

This is the PG version of how he handled that dude in *American Gangster.*

+FARK HEAD No I don't. But I practice Krav Maga and it's quite simple to do. First you need to know that this is a close distance strike (so are elbow and knee strikes). If the distance is extremely short, you need to open your hand and hit your target with that part between your thumb and your point finger (like Denzel did). Now, if your target is a little further (and you should maybe avoid that strike) then you might want to use the tips of all four fingers (extending your hand and arm toward your opponent's throat). If so, you might need to shorten the distance by moving one foot while the other stays to the ground for weight transfer best balance of your body. Like a normal punch, you should rotate your shoulders and hips so that your whole body gives the strike. Oh yeah, one last way to do it is to literally punch vertically (this is often used for knife defense).

Not counting ex boxers and MMA fighters, the two actors who threw the most authentic punches, you knew they could punch in real life and knock people out, was James Cagney and Denzel. It's no coincidence that both grew up hard and most of their childhood friends were in prison or dead.
