There has been some confusion about this video. I mention that I bought that particular sulfamic acid at Lowe's and then later I say that I buy mine at Home Depot. Lowe's does not normally sell sulfamic acid. I spoke with the local store manager because of a sign they had posted that they will match or beat any competitors price. After some haggling, I convinced him to special order some for me. Lowe's is much closer to me than Home Depot. If your local Lowe's does not carry it, ask to speak to the manager and let them know that there is a product at Home Depot that you need and want and you would like to buy it from them. It may or may not work at any given store.

The crock pot was bought at a local thrift store named Value City U.S.A. It cost $4.99 and works great for small amounts. A gallon of green copper(II) chloride (AP) will dissolve the base metal from about a half pound of pins in a couple of days on high. Be sure that it has the all glass lid and not a glass lid with a plastic knob. The fumes will dissolve the screw holding the knob on.

Geo, If I have aq. regia, and adding sulfamic acid, do I have to see no reaction and then stop adding it?

Sir i have problem in extraction of copper metal from my waste nitrate solution, When i add iron plate to my nitrate solution iron hydroxide is precipitated instead of copper metal, why this happened and how to avoid it?

I'll admit Geo, I haven't had much luck using Sulfamic acid on dirty AR from ceramic CPUs. I am very careful with my nitric acid additions during the recovery. When I add the sulfamic I barely get a reaction or sometimes nothing. The trouble starts after when I try to drop the gold with SMB. I will get lots of fizzing then and the gold doesn't want to drop. If the SMB doesn't drop the gold I'll move onto cementing with copper. When I add the copper I can see a instant reaction from the nitric acid. I'm at a loss as to whats going on and why the sulfamic isn't working.

Are you carrying the dissolution to completion in one addition of chemicals? I do it in steps. I intentionally start with too little HCl to fully dissolve all the metal. This ensures that no matter how much sodium nitrate I add, it will not dissolve all metal. When the reaction stops and and will not start again with more nitrate, I let everything settle and test with stannous chloride. It should be negative for gold. Filter the solution and add anything in the filter back to the reaction vessel. Add fresh HCl and start the reaction again. Depending on how much material I start with, I may repeat this a couple of times. When you see the pins/legs floating on the surface, it's time to dissolve everything. The pins that are floating is actually hollow gold tubes with the kovar base metal removed. This means there is very little base metal left. Be sure to test this last solution while cool. A hot solution can give a false positive.

Geo, I am familiar with the process. I've done it numerous times. Recovery from ceramic CPUs can take a lot of acid because there is a lot of base metals to chew through before it goes after the gold. I usually will have the reaction stall once. I'll check with stannous and it will be negative. I'll pour it off and add fresh HCl/water and continue on. The problem is the sulfamic doesn't seem to denox for me I don't get the reaction you did in this video. When I add the sulfamic I barely get any fizzing which is confusing.

Of course, I did not mean to offend or imply. I type responses I think other people reading may need to see. I have no idea. Either the sulfamic acid has some how gone bad or it's not really sulfamic acid. Look up the wiki for sulfamic acid. It doesn't show the reaction but there is a pretty good description for it. I would be suspicious of the sulfamic. Even if it's in the same container as what I have. Try a different supply. The crystal look like tiny diamonds. Very glittery.

No offence taken Geo, just confused why it doesn't work. I bought it at Home Depot a year or two ago. It seemed to work somewhat when I first bought it but lately it doesn't want to. I'll get some more, maybe it's bad. The powdered sulfamic looks just like regular white sugar. Oh, and thanks for the video, well done!

Baffling?? I am a newbie but have not had any trouble using sulfamic acid. I buy the real stuff online. Not the stuff GEO is using. I add a little at a time as GEO is doing. Don't more than 2 teaspoons max.

It is a crock pot or slow cooker. The actual inner pot is ceramic and the outer pot is aluminum with a heating element. It has four settings, off, low, medium and high.

So, to clarify, is the reaction producing Nitrous Oxide (N2O), or Nitrogen oxides (NOx)? Just wondering.

The byproducts are N2O predominantly with a small amount of NO2. It is not fit for human consumption.
