Geoff I will stake money on there being, underneath that grit, there is a whole lot of compacted moss and I would guess that the plant itself originally came from Schwerters in Germany. It’s not a problem but once a week or longer is enough water this time of year. They are hardy little things the hybrids. I have some in a small bark mix with chopped moss and perlite, and some in the mix you have. What I try and do when I repot is put them in clear pots so I can see how roots are doing as when they go they go quickly. Then I stand that in a black pot just to keep algae down. I grow both in the cool house and intermediate house. They are one of my favourite Dendrobiums that’s for sure.

Thanks that's fabulous, Lynn! My other was in moss and perlite but it still keeled over on me - maybe I overwatered or the summer heat did for it. I'll swap the media over and put it in a transparent pot - if I can find one that small. Do you wait till you can see no moisture at all - or water when it's 'about' to dry completely? And finally...can you recommend your favourite?! 😀

Lynn Smith has a lot of cuthbertsonii and hybrids, that's where I'd go for information since she's also in the UK

I tried a cuthbertsonii last year and i killed it unfortunately, but they got everything going for them, compact growth, stunning leaves and beautiful longlasting blooms so i will surely try them again 😁

Yeah you should be the same as me with climate - more or less. I'm reliably told the hybrids are much harder to kill - so fingers crossed for this one. As you say, they 'tick all the boxes' (hate that phrase!) so if this one survives I might get a few more, as there are some lovely hybrids.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 yes indeed my climate more or less is the same as yours, biggest difference being i grow in the home so my nighttime temperature might not drop enough for them. Next time i think i'll buy a couple of them, some surely will survive....i hope 😊 Fingers crossed there will be spring shows, Akerne usually has a nice selection with them

Aaaaah, you have yourself a challenge plant there! Mine was dead in under 3 months, as soon as the temps went up it went down. Lynn Smith has stunning sulawesi and cuthbertsonii, watched one of her videos the other day. The cross that is doing well for me is Illusion (sulawesi x cuthbertsonii). There is a pink and white form that I have and an orange and yellow form. As the other plant was dying, Illusion put up a single flower and 7 new growths, held that flower for 7 months. Another bud came up as the first one faded recently so it has not been out of bloom for me. I need to refine the conditions, probably a bit more light to see if it can carry more blooms for me.

Yeah you'd certainly think I have the exact right conditions - so why did it die? Weird. Of course, being a greenhouse and all, despite being cold for most of the year, in mid-summer it can get up to 36°C - so maybe that was the issue. Who knows? But I think they're worth trying again. It was Lynn's video that inspired me to take the plunge.😃

Hi. Would you recommend that cross as a more resistant variety of cuthbersonii? What has been your experience 1 year later?

Roger has one. Also Danny on Miss Orchid Girl had one. No update on hers. She is in Cypress.

Thanks Jay. Sounds like for once, my environment might actually be ideal for them compared to house-growers or hot-country folk! It's a mystery how I killed the other one to be honest..🤷‍♂️
