Demolition of the Superego?

Freud, Alexander and Ferenczi all called for its demolition or complete elimination, but the field followed Strachey instead calling instead for its modification or modulation. Why this was a mistake. Why people are afraid of Freud's radical language here.

James, while I agree conscience is associated with the capacity for concern, I think it has even earlier roots in instinctual attachment and love for and identification with the nurturer.

Thank you so much for such a open ended analysis on this doctor the view of the ego being sufficient to enforce sociatial rules has been one ive used in quieting my superego when it flares up as i can call it useless and i put it in the same place where it wants my shadow to sit so to speak. I myself am i very firm believer in more "eastern psychology" during my stint in university one of the first questions i went out of the way to ask my professor was if we were going to cover jung. I love the aspect of shadow work and it does make me feel more whole trying to operate more of a system of my anima,my ego, and my shadow, while pulling on my innate anger to basically shout down my superego when it tries to put me into a neurotic state i have borderline personality disorder and i have found that following such a system has helped me be more flexible in dealing with my innate instablity and to be more proactive on dealing with and aceppting myself instead of wallowing in guilt enforced by a neurotypical society that only serves to further repress and guarantees the rise of subconscuous self loathing and the existence of the superego as a dominant force in the mind through multisystematic enforcement. I would love to share more thoughts and hear more of your insight from you if you wouldnt care especially pertaining towards borderline personality disorder and the shadow. Im glad i have found your work. Sorry to type a book but i was excited to hear what ive been practicing over years with myself gradually to be said from someone of your learned stature i would be honored to hear more and learn more. All the best!

Hi Don, would you please do a segment about the Internal Saboteur/Severe Superego - in particular how it relates to loss of a father in childhood to whom the child had strong ambivalent feelings, followed by failure to live up to the ego ideal of the father. Can the Internal Saboteur arrange psychosomatic symptoms? Would love to hear your views on this topic.

No, I think the reverse is the case. I think the conscience, grounded in our primate inheritance and in the innate instinct for attachment to the primary carer, is universal (don’t do to others what you don’t want them doing to you). The superego, on the other hand, is highly culturally relative. The psychopath knows how to silence conscience and regards the superegos rules as applying to the others, but not to him, as he’s is “special”.

I know you are slippery as an eel in terms of refuting your statements (obviously), but I'm sure yours is the dumbest take in the history of mankind. Considering a psychopath does not have a conscience. 🤣

Dr. Carveth, would you say that the Super Ego is a second order PS-function whereas the conscience derives from the depressive position? The super ego would thus be agressive-masochistic, while the conscience would derive from the capacity for concern.

Dr. Carveth, through my training, I'm thinking lately about Loewald's distinction between a new experience of an object and an experience of a new object, where the former is what the working-through of transference is supposed to be by his lights (I think). I think that this issue is closely related to the concerns about modification of the superego that you're speaking about, here. I can't quite put my finger on it, though. I wonder if you could point me toward some papers that explicate this distinction, particularly ones that have a lot of clinical examples in them. Best wishes, Kira.

Thanks Prof. Carveth for your affect stimulating inputs on functional organisation of Superego. Is demolition of superego synonymous with Psychopathic tendency, who have no guilt/remorse?

Thank you for the interesting idea of a conscience and super-ego coexisting within the mind. Using a distinction between moral and ethical values that is sometimes made in philosophy, might the conscience component be likened to personal morals while an the super-ego be likened to the ethical (i.e. external, societal) norms? If that comparison has a merit, then would not there be a problem that the conscience would ultimately be unconstrained and lacking a universal quality? As a perhaps very crude example, I have seen interviews with psychopathic killers, where they become incensed at the interviewer's question about a possible harm to a child; such a psychopath would state with an outrage: "Those who harm children are beyond redemption!". And that is despite having committed multiple murders of human beings! Isn't that an example of a strong conscience (i.e., a private moral structure) that is pathologically distorted, whereas a "merciless" super-ego would have been just the right remedy?

If infant experiment with red blue teddy bears showed existence of conscience at 3 months of age, I was wondering, can it be that Jung “collective unconscious” being somehow genetically inherited and influenced conscience at that early age.

i completely agree that is the solution as a punjabi hindu atheist. i infact love your structural addition to freud's id ego superego. as also a lacanian and hegelian marxist, i love using mathematics and dialectics and have made a formula for that both freud's and urs. i cannot send the visual image or explain the method here but here is a texual representation and i hope you can imagine a triangle representing it :D here goes: the super ego is represented below the triangle as -1, the ego ideal is 4 at the top of the triangle, the 2 is the id forming a base point, and 3 is the ego forming the other base point. i'll add one thing as a foucauldian-the super ego is deleted from the structure of the psyche and becomes the space time mass(cultural relativism of foucault and zizek) domain as an object of sociology instead of psychology. ive learnt alot from you. thank you for all you taught me and will continue to teach me. namaste.

5:10~ I like philosopher Ayn Rand's solution to the 'is' 'ought' problem. I just gave it a quick google. Its got to do with one's life as the standard of value. Most people don't understand her, she advocates rational self-interest, and doesn't ascribe to the dominant connotation of selfishness. You can't be life-advancingly self-interested or selfish, without a self. The idea of cutting other people's throats for oneself isn't selfishness. ' In answer to those philosophers who claim that no relation can be established between ultimate ends or values and the facts of reality, let me stress that the fact that living entities exist and function necessitates the existence of values and of an ultimate value which for any given living entity is its own life. Thus the validation of value judgments is to be achieved by reference to the facts of reality. The fact that a living entity is, determines what it ought to do. So much for the issue of the relation between “is” and “ought.” ' “The Objectivist Ethics,” The Virtue of Selfishness, 17
