Fascinating thing about suspension of belief/disbelief is that from my experience most people rejecting religion started with taking religion too seriously. Really helpful content, thanks for your work.

The concept of “transitional space,” is very timely for me as I am skipping church today in favor of the theater lol

Mr. Carveth, I didn't realise that some of the major proponents of Object Relations psychoanalysis were strongly Christian in background and perspective. I found that to be very interesting and important. Thank you for your valuable analysis of Object Relations' major theoreticians.

@42:30 ; doesn’t this perfectly explain how a legendary football match where Pele played on one side (for the first half) and the opposing team (for the second half), while earnestly competing for both sides in the same game? Thank you once again professor for kickin’ the knowledge to us YouTubing students.

Dr. Carveth, what is your conclusion about personality formation in collectivist cultures (China, etc.)? I am providing support for people in this demographic working in tech, and they seem to be struggling with integrating east and west.

20:40~ .. 'I don't think there's a lot of evidence of early splitting'.. I agree Klein would likely (in my view) change her paranoid schizoid positioning forward from ~5 months to perhaps 9 to 14 months, because she'd be integrating some of the latest neuropsychology (such as the integrative work of Allan Schore).

Can you explain use of an object to us Don? I get confused by what Winnicott means. Does an analysand use the psychoanalyst for his benefit for their needs like a baby does with the mother to grow and develop?

Something I've noted in both the high church and "low church" celebration of the Anglican liturgy is that the text and the ritual call us into relationship. The difference can come in the way it is "played out" through the ritual. In the more Anglo-Catholic presentation this can lean more towards superstitious and literal belief, while the very low presentation can tend towards "mere memorial" and disbelief.

ProfFell Yes, I think you are right about this. What Winecott called the transitional area is hard to maintain.

Great video! Tongue in cheek...I like the way your talk is about religious belief but your title is missing a 't'. An a-teistic /atheistic title for a religious talk!

At 21.44 you say Kleins schizoid position only happens in children who are damaged by parents, but just previous to that you said that children are bound to become fragmented regardless of parenting??

  • @doncarveth

Yes, I am somewhat critical of client here. I feel some degree of splitting is inevitable, However more severe splitting results from environmental failure. We all enter the paranoid schizoid position but with good enough parenting we move on into the depressive repaired of position.

Thanks for getting back to me. Another interesting point you make is about winnicot being so terrified of revealing his true self, which made me wonder could he have possibly been gay? Sounds so out there, but what else would make him feel so scared at that time and as a Christian?

Fried Flowers Well, he was married twice, no children. There are suggestions that there was very little if any sex in the first marriage. Beyond that I can’t say. It’s a possibility.

What are we talking about religion for in this day and age? it’s more or less for psychotics since after Darwin, no? Like in therapy it’s the very choice to do a video on Christianity and psychoanalysis today that says something interesting about the speaker. The actual content is moot.
