I assume this house was razed to allow for a new apartment building on the site. The house looked to be in reasonably good condition, considering its age (built in the 1920s, perhaps?). Someone had gone to the expense of re-roofing it with fire-resistant, engineered tiles, and the exterior paint appeared to have been kept up. The saddest sight was at the end of the video as we saw the front steps leading nowhere, to what only an hour before had been a proud home...

This is absolutely disgraceful. What an utter waste of a beautiful old home, and a completely unnecessary load of debris added to the landfill. This house could have easily been relocated. I despise developers who do this. At the very least, have someone come in and dismantle it. Materials can be salvaged, repurposed, and/or reused. A two middle finger salute to the developer!

Years ago I was with a company that tore houses and buildings down, I learned on a Cat D9. They place a drag chain at rear of house, 4’ up above floor level. Couple the chain to cables on each side. Cables hooked to winch. Put that 100,000 pound Cat in first, power up and let her go, Chain broke through entire home, toppling it. Then the D9 would do the rest of the demolition.

I'll add, I couldnt count how many times during demolition people would get outraged at our demo site. It's the developer, the city or county council that's held accountable. Not the demo company. They are just doing their job. I couldnt agree more that tearing down perfectly good homes paves the way for increased housing costs as supply diminishes for affordable, existing homes.

You will never see the quality in detailing like you did on this home EVER again. Now just cheaply made particle woods... and other corners cut to throw up a house as FAST and as cheap as possible. Back in the days builders took PRIDE in their work.. Not just in their WALET . They would carry around their hand made tool box.. Well it would be hand engraved and made to be very detailed .. This is how they showed the quality of their work.. By their tool boxes.. Now builders dont care... They buy all the stuff from HOME DEPOT and throw it up .. No quality .. No workmanship..

  • @ddavejb

Definitely a pre-WW-2 house. The wood lath, plaster, and custom built-ins indicate such. Construction techniques changed radically from those used in this house, during the 40's and 50's, when houses needed to be more standardized and built quickly. Even houses built in the 40's and 50's are very solidly built compared to the garbage slapped together today.

That house 3/4 torn down has more integrity than many houses built today. the Front rooms down stairs probably could still be saved even with the roof torn off. I bet the fire place is at this time of demolition is still a thousand times safer than the modern pipe ones. look at the windows, they were even the modern ones. The front Porch could still entertain a large group as a gathering place . There were thousands of poor people out on the street thanks to our Government homeless who would have loved that home and made a beautiful life there. this had to be owned by a very selfish and greedy man. or organization or stupid government

Old doors, fixtures, the roof tiles, interior tiles and cabinets, windows, even the columns in front. Sad. Almost certainly going to be another cheap block apartment just like the one behind it.

The excavator operator here needs to better understand the purpose of the swing motor, the swing motor and huge ring gear beneath the cab of the excavator allow the excavator above the tracks to rotate. The strength of the swing motor is not anywhere as close to the strength of the hydraulic operating the boom and stick. Swinging the cab and bucket sideways when demoing a house can cause the swing motor and the giant ring gear to break. Fixing that is a little difficult, you have to lift the entire cab, boom and stick off the tracks. Figure 12 hours of an inexpensive mechanic labor time plus parts ($4k-$6K parts). Most mechanics will also bill for a helper too. A real CAT dealer will charge a whole lot more. Do whatever you want with the boom and stick, anything, just be gentle with the swing.

It takes so much time and effort to build it, and just seconds to destroy it. That's how life is, too. Have you given your life to JESUS CHRIST? Do you have eternity secure? Jhon 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
