Time Lapse of Old House Demolition and New Construction

Фильм және анимация

Time lapse showing the demolition of our old house and the construction of our new house!
We bought this property in 2014 and lived in the existing house for 4 years. We then demolished the old house and self-built a new one in the same location. I acted as the General Contractor (for the work that we didn't do ourselves). My dad and I did the framing, windows, siding, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, paint, flooring, tile, and my dad built the kitchen cabinets, along with lots of help from friends and family along the way.

Most municipalities where I live (Canada) are seriously compressing the size of new building lots. They hate big lots now and therefore buying a large lot becomes very expensive. I hate it because I want a large building lot myself.

@Gameygames101 The camera takes two AA batteries. We bought some high quality lithium ion AAs and they would last a couple of weeks before having to recharge them. Since it was a timelapse, it would only have to take a picture every hour, so there wasn't much drain on the batteries.

I've done many demos like this. They are fun to do because you don't have to worry about breaking anything. I used to find the hot water tank and lay it on the ground. It would still be full so I would pick way up in the air and squeeze it between the bucket and the thumb. The water would jet out both sides of the tank. Little pleasures. Lol.

@@myapologiesmissgurl5069 we build with bricks or concrete walls in general fully. The materials we use are much higher quality in terms of lasting etc but we also luckily don't have as many natural disasters here like tornadoes or earthquakes so it's cheaper to make good houses that last a really long time instead of these kinds of prefab houses or ones that use drywalling with insulation. I will try and find an article that might explain more or less how houses are built here but in the mean time I suggest searching on KZread for some South African homes in the cities they're really nice

myapologiesmissgurl to add on, our building materials such as brick is much cheaper here so out house are much more resilient against the elements. A tornado would damage the house but not destroy it. We also tend to build differently in different climate zones so across the country there are different styles to cope with the environment. This is unlike Americans who tend to have a more generic home style and just use ac and climate control. That unfortunately isnt so great for the environment

I think this is discussed on every single home construction build based out of the US. Building a home in the US is expensive as fuck just from using wood materials. The cost to build one out of concrete and brick would cause the price to skyrocket. The sad outcome of unchecked corporate greed and capitalism. It's done this way out of necessity for a lower cost.

Beautiful home. We have been living in our home for 4 years now and are looking at this option to tear down our home and rebuild on our property as we love the neighborhood but need a bigger home. Wife is a drafter and interior designer. Any helpful advise?

Cool time lapse video! How often did you take pics? Every 10 mins? I just got a brinno tlc200pro and I need to figure what settings are best for our home build that I want to time lapse. Did you take pics more often with interior?

Joanna Robbins I used a couple of different settings at different stages. For example, I used a quicker setting (30sec maybe) for the demolition so that I could capture more detail. For longer stretches of the construction, I used 10min. In hindsight, I wish I would have had 2 cameras. One for outside and one to move around inside to capture more on the interior of the house.

Hive to Home thank you so much for that info, I was planning on doing 10 mins on exterior as well. Interior I’ll do more often since it won’t take as long when shooting room by room. Maybe I will need another camera. Your Video turned out awesome though. Thanks for sharing it.

Which camera did you use? Attached to the light pole or tree? Also include in the description which pole you used inside the house and the cost of demolition, the cost of the new built. Thank you!

We used a Brinno timelapse camera. It was attached to a electrical pole in a weatherproof case on the corner of our property. Inside the house I just screwed it to the wall. The demolition was approximately $8,000 and the cost to build was approximately $165 CAD per square feet. Prices have significantly increased since then though (we built in 2018).

Seems like front porch roof frame is missing some type of horizontal tie or needs hardware to make the gable a rigid frame.

  • @HivetoHome

There’s a different type of metal roof on the porch, the 2nd storey dormers, and the back porch. They are smaller sheets (4’x4’) that are made to look like shake-style shingles.

How sad for the neighbor to the left who now has a ginormous house butting right up against theirs. Probably gets no sunlight and they get to look out their window and stare at siding now. Completely changes the dynamic of their yard. And they had to live next to this mess for months probably.

That’s a very small window (maybe a 2’x2’?) that begins approximately five feet off the ground and it already holds an air conditioner unit. Not many people can see out of the glass.
