(Edit: I think you could also run Gundam in it? Less sure on that though.) Combat is a lot more punishing then in D&D and the standard character creation system is life-path, which isn't for everyone. There are rules in the recent editions for creating characters in a way D&D players would find more familiar though. I highly recommend the starter pack. It's got basically all but 20 pages of the core rule book (I think those pages are optional equipment) and an adventure. Plus a nice star map and I think mine had some dice too? It's a nice pack. (I really need to get off my ass and run it for my groups.)

Considering they want to replace 5E next year with OneD&D the CEOs likely looked at all this backlash and said "is it really worth it?" After all, everything that has happened recently partades to 5E only. They could very easily turn around and try something like this in the future for OneD&D right out the gate when it comes out.

But then they have a 4th edition issue on their hands. ie: Everyone played 3.5 instead because it was better and no one was interested in 4th, hence why 5th came out with the changes it did. At the end of the day, we dont need Wizards for this game.

The only thing OneDnD had going for it was the trust of the community. All they had to do was lure in the curious and let them convince their friends to follow the new hot stuff, regardless of quality. With minimal effort, 5e would become a thing of the past and everyone would gather more and more around the VTT to explore dungeons and slay dragons. Unfortunately for WotC, their greed ruined everything. They made the community less complacent and more willing to move from their comfort zone. I think it killed OneDnD right there. Unless WotC also becomes less complacent and more willing to move from their comfort zone, they'll never have any kind of success with OneDnD. They can't rely on brand recognition anymore. Now, they have to deliver actual creative quality. The new edition has to bring something new to the table, something attractive, creatively speaking. It has to, or else it will flop.

I was never a dnd guy, I have been playing HERO ststem since I was 12 and when I went to D&D I found it so limited. It can literally run all campaigns from Warriors and Wizards, sci fi, pulp, mil Sim, super heros. You name it, HERO system can pull it off. Down side is it is really complicated to start. Once you understand it gets easier, but that barrier to entry is rough so I understand if it is not for everyone

They finally realized that the game isn't meant to be monetized (unless you count the official books including Curse of Strahd) and they decided "We have gone too far. Maybe we should stop trying to monetize D&D and let the community do what they want.". Overall WotC regretted everything and we won. I am happy to share this news with my friends in the D&D Club. Now what they need to do is keep in touch with the community and creators in order to get some good products out that people want to buy. But we should stick to the side of the lower employee, and acknowledge that these layoffs are likely a stop-gap for their market losses, and they need to find better ways to meet their bottom line. Also a magic player. This is far from over, they're backing down from this but they still think DnD is undermonetized. The execs need to leave before there's actual breathing room. Or just move on. BTW Pokemon is kinda fun and they're back to events.
Celebrate this item, but be vigilant. The SRD 5.1 only applies to 5e (3e is still a risk). They only stopped their push, not give up nor state they had no power to deauth. I fully expect them to try again in the future.
Trust once broken isn't that easily re-gained. It's a good decision, I give WOTC that. But there is a lot of work ahead for them to really be worthy of our trust ever again. Also, let's keep in mind that Hasbro's directive to increase D&D monetisation is still active. As such, we should expect them to try getting that money in other ways. Sure, SRD remains free but rapidly raising prices of everything else may be the eventual side effect. As far as I'm concerned, all we're having at the moment is a long rest. I agree. They may have decided to completely scrap the backwards compatibility and just go on and say One/6e is fully separate from 5e now. Or make a 5.2 SRDfor 6e.but honestly, unless it wows people (which I doubt it will looking at the unearthed Arcana) most players will stick with 5e, and we'll have a repeat of 4e

Eldritch Blast and Item Attumement are old news. They were added in 5.1 SRD long ago. Originally when WotC released SRD for 5e, they released version 5.0 without some core features (like item attunement), and later added them. It's unrelated to OGL scandal, OGL 5.1 happened a few years ago
From my perspective, this is more of a pyrrhic victory than anything else. We now have the SRD out in the Creative Commons, but we also know exactly what WotC are prepared to do. At this stage, we absolutely should keep an eye out on WotC to see what they do next. They wrecked the trust that the community had in them, and that trust may be impossible to rebuild for good reasons.

Can I just say how *SHOCKED* I am that Hasbro/WoTC fully surrendered? This level of victory feels like finding a Unicorn. Also *THANK YOU* for pointing the unfortunate obvious fact that because of the way our economy is set up, any publicly-traded company (ie, has shareholders that can buy in) with any level of brand power is *always* going to get greedy. They are, in fact, legally obligated to, so that they can deliver maximum profit to the shareholders. The one thing about this whole debacle that was good for me is that it reminded me that Savage Worlds exists. We need to keep tabs on them, with their finances washing out to sea they're bound to try something to recoup down the line. I am glad things have settled for now though
I've always loved playing new systems and trying new ttrpg things (one of my first games was a Mutants and Masterminds game and one of my favorite campaigns was in Little Fears) and just knowing how many TTRPG players are willing and able to try and start new systems and have new experiences is super exciting for me. I whole-heartedly am excited to see the diversification of the TTRPG scene from here on out!
My wife and I stopped by the gaming store to pick up her birthday present (a model car of Baby from Supernatural and some dice with roses in them bcuz I'm schmaltzy like that) and we noticed their sections for games like Pathfinder, Mutants and Masterminds, etc were absolutely bursting with product. According to the owner, they had to dust off a bunch of stock they've had for months to keep up with the sudden demand for anything other than D&D. It was incredible. So we picked up Pathfinder 2e: Book of the Dead. 😁
“Don’t rally behind one company or one game” I agree completely. I also feel like if you could swing it have one game and one system and another in another.

I can agree with others here in the fact that: yes, we do need to still be wary of WotC cause community trust is at an all time low. I also agree that you really did come at this with a logical and relatively unbiased explanation of events as they unfolded, which was good to have when others could be giving into a lot of vitriol. It is lovely to see the community band together for themselves, and hopefully listening might be more of a norm for the corporate side, even if that may just be wishful thinking
Maybe I'm just really cynical, but I can't help but wonder, "Is there something else to this? How is this going to bite us in the ass and favor them?" I don't know enough about the whole thing and the processes around it to really know, so I'll go with the flow and say "This is good." But there's still that little thing in the back of my head going, "But is it really?"
Thank-you so much for making this series of videos! Also, on a smaller level, so happy that this was the next big piece of news you got to report on this after your last video on the subject!
I just randomly found your channel to figure out about this situation, and then just today decided to see if anything had changed. Congrats to the community on your collective victory!
After Paizo announced the ORC, which would have the same effect for Pathfinder content -- putting it all under an irrevocable CC license -- this was really the only way WotC _could_ respond. If their main competitor gained the favour of the entire community, D&D would've been finished. It almost definitely wouldn't have disappeared entirely, but I reckon Pathfinder would've become the more popular and profitable system by a long shot.
I love it that paizo sold 8 month of pathfinder stuff in 2 weeks
They finally got it through their CEO brains when their shareholders started reminding them that the customers are never wrong. Shame it took that much.
A game I recommend is "Don't Rest Your Head." It's more of a storytelling game than a roleplaying game (one difference being that when a player wins a roll, they narrate what happens next), but it's something I really enjoyed playing. It's a game for smaller groups, though, a GM and one to three players. It starts getting unwieldy once you at a fourth. It's a very different and more surreal experience than you'll find in most D&D (or related related games) campaigns.
The most horrifying horror story has a happy ending, surprisingly.
Something doesn't seem right
As someone who loves more narrative focused systems and pen and paper over tabletop, I like the side effect of my favourite systems getting a bit more noticed.
this has been by far the best response to corporate greed from any online community I have ever seen or heard of, it showed that the community appreciates the creators in it.
i believe they are sincere in that 5e and previous stuff released under 1.0a and anything in the future released under it will remain untouched and creators can freely use it. however i think it's likely they will try to make another agressive and restrictive license for the next edition, OneDnD. thankfully even if they do we now can clearly just keep using 5e and any new content that 3p creators come up with and their new product will not make nearly as much money as they hope it will make. furthermore, this is a huge win for the community regardless of what they plan to do even if they somehow try to mess with the OGL again, we've already proven that we are more than capable of just leaving for other systems, truly an amazing time to be a ttrpg fan.
I think I'm still going to buy the pathfinder books and choose if I want to do dnd or pathfinder...
"I'm going to be streaming." The sincerity of a man that thought he was just going to stream FF for a few hours. We had no idea what was in store for us. 🍔
As an old school TTRPG player it makes me so happy to see the community finally branch out away from D&D 5e and try some other systems. That is the way our community used to be, but the influx of new players from Crit Role and other podcasts, coupled with the overwhelming popularity of 5e made it extremely hard to find groups for anything other than 5e. But now people have started experimenting and trying new things, it is wonderful to get to introduce new players to other systems and I hope this keeps up for a good long while. 5e will always have a place in the community but they are no longer the be all and end all.
Nobody won, in my opinion. WotC not only couldn't push the changes they wanted, but they also suffered a major blow to customer satisfaction and fidelity. And as for the players, we lost quite a lot of content creators that have been soured with D&D and WotC because of the new OGL fiasco, meaning those players who remain with D&D see less homebrew content being published by third parties because they have moved on to other systems.
Im still looking into paizo, pathfinder looks like it could be a great system. I probably won't ever stop playing dnd 5e, but im preparing to jump ship. Im also gonna look towards other systems as well, im very interested in sci-fi and also lovecraftian content.

Traveller is a nice, flexible system for sci fi games. It's pretty easy to modify it to fit the kind of sci fi setting you want. It's also pretty easy to remove aspects of it you don't enjoy. Straight out of the box with no modifications it's a bit like Firefly. With a little forethought it can be made into Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 or a much more serious harder sci fi feel.
For the sake of my younger brother and his friends already excited, and me not having a solid homebrew and using the coast books for e5, while trying to teach them the paper way and give them the experience the best I can. I just hope wizards ease up and let me show these kids the world they play in, with their respective works, other creator's works, and my own to make something to talk about for years and inspire another generation. As always Mr. Crab, amazing content.
I am cautiously optimistic! Praying so hard WotC doesn’t take it back somehow. I love this community! You all are the best!
Considering they want to replace 5E next year with OneD&D the CEOs likely looked at all this backlash and said "is it really worth it?" After all, everything that has happened recently partades to 5E only. They could very easily turn around and try something like this in the future for OneD&D right out the gate when it comes out.

My group already had this idea of switching systems after each campaign. Currently the plan is after dnd I'll run avatar legends, then current dm will do cyberpunk red, then I run starfinder, they'll run vampire the masquerade, then I'll run call of cthulhu
I'm glad you see this situation for what it is. They never wanted this result and I'm glad that they were wrong. They will definitely try something similiar in the future and that's why we must stay vigilant!
"Did anybody 'win?'" Yes, we did! Undoubtedly!
I still can't believe this is how things ended for now. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop, but for now, I'll accept this as a win.
That is one of the best apologies and backpedaling I've seen a company do. Yes they are in damage control. But they are smart enough to understand what they broke, and how to go about fixing it. I will give them an A on the response. They couldn't do it better.

We gotta be vigilant. Now that these people know how we fight back, no doubt they'll try to sneak in something. If anything, we should keep our guard up. This is now a game of mutual attrition.
Thanks for covering this! You made it pretty easy to understand :) also, you're right... I've been playing Pathfinder more lately and it's pretty damn fun :)
Ive said for years that supporting, or at least trying, multiple systems is good for both the community and the individual. Been seeing people start to come around to that now, and I gotta say I love it.
"It was important we take this step now, so there's no question." No, it's important WotC take this step now to attempt to staunch the anger of the shareholders
I am so happy about this. This was probably the only way to save themselves from losing most of their community, and this might even make new creative people pick it up. I always love it when people are being creative with the game, and even buy sourcebooks from WOTC when they themselves are being creative to show them that is how they can earn more money from me. Being creative themselves, and not claim others creativity
Appreciate the video, we just need to keep our eye on things & not let our guard down.
When the license is in the Creative Commons and they can't try to do this again, then we win.
This is a big step for Wizards moving forward and getting back in touch with the community. It should never have come to this, and I can't ignore the layoffs, but I'm willing to chalk it up to 'a big complicated business'. Now what they need to do is keep in touch with the community and creators in order to get some good products out that people want to buy. But we should stick to the side of the lower employee, and acknowledge that these layoffs are likely a stop-gap for their market losses, and they need to find better ways to meet their bottom line. I hope that all those people can move on to brighter and better futures.
The idea of a Scorbunny beating Arceus to death with a lightsaber sounds amazing.
I love that you’re just fishing in XIV for the footage. It’s very relaxing
"Delusional" is the best word to use to describe those in power. It's not just WotC/Hasbro, it's everywhere. I'm so used to it that it comes as a complete shock to be heard for once. I genuinely thought WotC would fight to the end, digging their own grave and burying themselves in it along with anyone they could take down. Because what was the alternative? Giving everything up and apologize for real? Until it happened, I could not believe it could happen.
Money-hungry people tend to also be very prideful, and with a pride as damaged as the WotC executives', they are going to seek some form of revenge. It sounds like petty toddler behavior, but it's the reality of that mindset
This is a victory: large companies hate setting the president that anyone but their own leadership has any control over the company's decisions. It's not going to prevent them from trying again, but feel good about this- the community pulled through!
There was a time when my husband wanted to work for WotC. He has been involved with D&D since he was 7(he's 49 now). It was heartbreaking at the time that he couldn't even get into customer support. Now I feel like he dodged a bullet. I don't think I'll ever be OK with the toxic work environment or attitude towards the community that the higher execs displayed. I'll still play, but I have more loyalty to my GM than to any system.
Thanks to this situation I learned how to manage and do campaign details, characters, and collect reference material traditionally and through other means, eliminating my need for DND Beyond's systems. I'm still going to be playing DND, and now other systems, but I needed a push to get off the crutch of their easy onboarding system and virtual character sheets and actually learn the mechanics and rules myself. Now I've learned and now I don't need them. I thank them for being an easy introduction but also for teaching me to move on.
To be honest, I only like watching D&D and tabletop games. However, ever since I subscribed to you, I got really interested in joining some in the future. I now know what to look out for when it comes to playing with other people in these types of games as well as how to act.
I don't care if they were pressured into "doing the right thing" - they will never get another penny out of me, and there's no reason to trust them.
I don't know why but it always makes me and my spouse laugh when CritCrab's videos are just them fishing in FFXIV. Maybe because we fish too, I dont know. It just tickles our funny bone!
The crab army has more than that. If they are given knives, they are near unstoppable... No one would mess with a crab with a shank..

1 - Bless you for leveling Fishing. I hate that gatherer SO much. 2 - You're entirely right. The more games that are out there ,the more things we have to look at and play and experience, the better off we'll all be!
Kudos to you Crab king! I love the sound of a Person who can broaden their horizons and becoming a more well rounded TTRPG player.
