Yet the rest of it was so bad, if that were the main issue, we wouldn't be having the conversation. You'd just pass that off as cost to the consumer, making everything more expensive and a lot of small projects less viable, but you could work, at least in theory. Reserving the right to more or less kill any project off for any or no reason is the even greater sticking point in the new text, and the greatest sticking point of all is the notion that the wording of the old license may be abusable to deauthorize the old version as a whole. If that proves true, or even if it remains as an unclear possibility, then it's as if the "kill off anyone, change the license anytime" clauses were already in.

I can see one possible way forwards for them though going down that road would be like throwing away a hundred dollars for a nickel on the ground. Basically they might be able to keep going by trying to go the mobile games route and tempt whales. If they succeed they could possibly get by without as big of a fan base. However like I said it's still a losing situation because without the accessibility the fans of the game who aren't willing to pay will eventually treat them like a mobile game and move on. Likely wizards and by extension hasbro will lose all the free advertising they had and therefore will probably spend more to make up for it all while their main player base starts to dwindle further.

It would be different if there was a rampant issue of "hateful" things being sold under the ogl, but there obviously isn't. The only reason they are saying that is to give themselves the power to take down anything they want under the guise of "we are just removing hateful content!". Have a module based on dwarves and elfs hating each other cause they each think the other cheated at some ancient competition? Wotc, even under this response, could just decide they don't like you and remove it cause it, by their own words, "triggers" hateful thoughts. Q: why has gender been changed to pronouns on the character sheet? WOTC: we're making our game more inclusive. Paizo: We actually have races with more than two genders, what pronouns would you use for a host gender? it's one thing to make a change and scream inclusivity/diversity, but it's a completely different story if you give actual reasons/advantages of the new instead of calling people bigots for preferring the old. Now, what's really funny is that they never updated the core book or srd with these new inclusive changes meaning if you want to see them you gotta buy the book, and yet they wanted them to be the new defaults instead of simply an optional rule change... Fixed version: When we initially conceived of revising the OGL, it was with three major goals in mind. First, we wanted the ability to prevent the use of D&D content from being included in hateful and discriminatory products. Second, we wanted to address those attempting to use D&D in web3, blockchain games, and NFTs by making clear that OGL content is limited to tabletop roleplaying content like campaigns, modules, and supplements. And third, we wanted to ensure that the OGL is for the content creator, the homebrewer, the aspiring designer, our players, and the community-not major corporations to use for their own commercial and promotional purpose. We realized this was mostly already covered in OGL1.0a and could have been clarified with just an addendum clarifying that the rights for movies and making NFTs was only for us and that the use the OGL could be revoked for groups that make hateful and discriminatory products. We would like to say that driving these goals were two simple principles: (1) Our job is to be good stewards of the game, and (2) the OGL exists for the benefit of the fans and that nothing about those principles has wavered for a second. The reality is the driving force was increasing our profit while making a very restrictive license and pretending it was open. The early copies of the new OGL included the provisions they did in order to coerce the third party creators we met with to sign a more favorable terms sheet and contract which were included with what we are now calling “drafts”. That “draft” language was not provided to content creators and publishers so their feedback could be considered before anything was finalized. In addition to language allowing us to address discriminatory and hateful conduct and clarifying what types of products the OGL covers, our “drafts” included royalty language designed to apply pressure to third party creators not to large corporations attempting to use OGL content. It was never our intent for this to impact our monetization negatively by the vast majority of the community. However, it’s clear from the reaction that we rolled a Nat 1 on both stealth and intimidation. It has become clear that it is no longer possible to fully achieve our goals while still not negatively impacting subscriptions to D&D Beyond. So, here is what we are doing. The next OGL will contain the provisions that allow us to be more subtle while pretending to protect and cultivate the inclusive environment and specify that it covers only content for TTRPGs. That means that other expressions, such as educational and charitable campaigns, livestreams, cosplay, VTT-uses, etc., may remain unaffected by any OGL update. Content already released under 1.0a will also remain unaffected as we would most likely lose the court cases by attempting to change that retroactively. What it will not contain is any royalty structure, that will be negotiated in private. It also will not include the license back provision that some people realized was a means for us to steal work. That thought only crossed our minds when looking through Etsy but not at DM screens or drink coaster dice trays of course. Under any new OGL, you will own the content you create. We won’t. Any language we put down will be crystal clear and unequivocal on that point. We don’t need to own it to repackage and sell it royalty free in perpetuity. The license back language could be argued that it was intended to protect us and our partners from creators who incorrectly allege that we steal their work simply because of coincidental similarities so that is what we are going to do. As we continue to invest in the game that we hope you love and move forward with partnerships in film, television, and digital games, that risk is simply too great to ignore. The new OGL will contain provisions to address that risk, but we will do it without a license back and without suggesting we have rights to the content you create. Your ideas and imagination are what makes this game special to you, and that belongs to you. A couple of last thoughts. First, we won’t be able to release the new OGL today because we need to rewrite it and try to allow time for this to blow over. We will continue to tell you it’s to make sure we get it right, but it is coming. Second, you’re going to hear people say that the community won, and we lost because making your voices heard forced us to change our plans. Those people will only be half right. They won for now -and so did we because we believe you will forget this in a few months time. Our plan was never to solicit the input of our community before any update to the OGL; the “drafts” you’ve seen were not attempting to do just that at all. We want to always profit from fans who create experiences together that everyone loves. We realize we did not do that this time and we are sorry for that. Our goal was never to get exactly the type of blowback which we ultimately got from you. Any change this major should only have been done if we were willing to take feedback, that’s if we cared about the community - which we don’t. We love D&D’s devoted player’s money and the creator’s money who take them on so many incredible adventures. Don’t let us down.

I've seen a few people saying that the changes would have only been with regards to removing hateful content and NFTs, even though they already had the means to do something about them under the existing license. It's actually a relatively small proportion of people who have been engaged enough to keep abreast of the developments regarding the leaked OGL revision, so they're banking on the broader consumer base remaining ignorant of the issue in order to allow them to control the narrative and paint their detractors as hysterical, even though their claim that this was a draft doesn't actually make sense because if they didn't intend for it to grant them ownership over independent work, even retrospectively for stuff released earlier, they wouldn't have written it into the revision the first place.

Given that the rumors are that 6E will have no race relationships/hatred because they have bought into the falsified idea that the different races in fantasy settings are in fact allegories for real world races and cultures. So supporting any story of revenge against an Orc or Goblin rampage as an Elf, human or halfling is now racist and fobbiden content. All the races get along together in 6E. Or else. Also there was a report that evil and good characters will be getting along with each other better now too. So a lot of backstory root conflict options will have been eroded away, and the new OGL1.1 was to be wielded as a sword on anyone that wouldn't have complied to such a viewpoint.

I call horse sh*t on that new OGL being an "early draft". Wizards fully intended to go through with it, and I'm sure they anticipated some people being mad. But they weren't ready for some × 20 number of people to be mad. They saw the money fan projects were making and after getting busted for printing cards in excess and selling them at price hikes they were desperate. Wizards wanted a cut of that money. And they wanted to hinder any competition that could best them. That's literally all there is to it.🤷🏽‍♀️

I've been primarily a Pathfinder player for years now, so whatever WotC does, it's easy for someone like me to think it doesn't matter since it won't affect me. However, not only are these actions possibly showing other companies what they can and can't get away with in this industry & hobby, but it also affects my fellow roleplayers who just happen to enjoy another system. So while I have no subscription to cancel, no buy orders to change, or campaigns to move, I'm still very much standing with y'all and following very closely. And, of course, if anyone wants help learning how to play Pathfinder or Starfinder, I'm around.

@@mrcephalopod if you were playing 3.5, I’d just say to move to Pathfinder 1e and brush up on it a little bit. They’re generally so similar that they’re fully interchangeable with minimal effort. For 5e, Pathfinder 2e would be easier. It’s a decidedly bigger change, but the rules are simple and easily (officially) found online for free if you look up “aonprd.” Also, there are TONS of great long and short form videos here on KZread for helping going from D&D to Pathfinder. Roll for Combat had a great in depth Q&A lasting almost 3 hours to that effect just yesterday on their channel. Hope this helps!

Don't forget, Daniel, you have children in your life, both your own offspring (for whom you added +1 intelligence to their character setup roll, no doubt!), and your other younger relations (nieces, nephews, and younger cousins), plus you and your adult friends when you want to play the most orc-ish games that existed before TTRPG's ever existed (Monopoly, Sorry!, Risk come immediately to mind)... ...and Hasbro has other targets to hit with boycott and disassociation besides D&D (for instance, may I suggest Mark Felton and Drachinifel KZread videos to replace GI Joe and Battleship, and Hayao Miyazaki films to replace My Little Pony?) I dabbled in D&D when I was a child (I think version 1!), and a friend of mine is doing DM'ing as a paid hobby, and I was going to participate, but after this brouhaha, I'm hoping he switches to non-D&D campaigns, or else I'll maybe eventually try Pathfinder TTRPG on my own...but I have other ways to NOT spend money at Hasbro, and I'm going to invoke ALL of them 😉

I think it has been pointed out before but I want to remind everyone that this "draft" had already been sent to vendors and I believe if I read it right kickstarted negotiated for a smaller fee and signed the 1.1 olg. So if that is true, they are completely lying about this being a draft and wanted feedback.

The funniest, most ironic thing about this whole scenario is that.....the community is doing all of this to *save* Dungeons & Dragons. I feel like, in a lot of the "community vs company" situations where the company is imploding their own game, the outcome is one of three scenarios: 1. the community gets the company to fold, and the game is damaged but (hopefully) salvageable. 2. the company ignores their community and destroy their own game. or 3. The company attempts to weather the storm and implement their actions when the voices are less loud and turn their game into a husk of its former self. However, that's not what's happening here. As Crab put it, we are not a part of their community, they are a part of ours. You could say that D&D and the original OGL is why tabletop RPGs have exploded in popularity and have gotten as big as they are today, but the RPG community can and will survive without Dungeons & Dragons, and by primarily targeting the content creators, the ones who grew D&D and have the most sway in the community, they have all but guaranteed their own downfall should the new OGL take place. What content creators are doing right now, by putting WotC on blast and refusing this "compromise," they are attempting to save the Dungeons & Dragons ip, because WotC need their content creators, but the content creators don't need WotC *or* the D&D ip.

I think this is well said, especially considering the other paths this situation can take starting from here in this present moment. I really hope we see the 1st outcome happen instead of the 3rd. A real shame too, 5e was such a huge improvement and had such a massive impact on people, bringing in new fans into the community.
