If you receive an upgrade from the Delta blue or Delta Gold to the Delta Platinum or Reserve, you will receive the certificate on the anniversary of the original card so you wont have to wait a year to get it

Well done. A couple of corrections. I have used several companion passes over the years in holding all 4 of these cards. Each time my companion pass deposited into my Delta account after the annual fee was charged but before it was too late to cancel. Each time I cancelled the card after the annual fee hit and the companion pass had been added to my Delta account and I never paid for the second year of the card. Also, when I eventually used the companion pass I did not have the card that gave me the pass, yet I was able to use a different Amex card to pay for the primary ticket.

Can you use the companion certificate to buy the tickets for someone else? I buy the tickets with certificate using my Amex Delta card but for two family members. Is it possible?

Thank you for this, jumped on the Reserve a few months ago so I can’t wait take advantage of the certificate next year.

The companion certificates are definitely worth it IMO. Everyone's mileage may vary - but we haven't had any issues with using them (2X Delta Platinum). Matter of fact - we'll be upgrading our cards to the Delta Reserve going forward. Thanks for the info + video!

You can receive one companion certificate each year of card ownership, and it can be used for 1 return trip. But just note you must first have the card for an entire year before you receive your first companion certificate.

Is a Companion Certificate eligible for an upgrade? Like, if we book for Main Cabin, are we eligible to be upgraded, or even pay out of pocket for an upgrade? Thx!

Yes. This happened to me. The delta business platinum now puts you on the upgrade list(although it is very low on the upgrade list). I used my companion pass to fly roundtrip from TPA to SAT and my partner and I both got upgraded to comfort plus on the return flight only. We have no other status with delta other than the being put on the very bottom of the upgrade list that this credit card give you. I hope this makes sense. It was a later in the evening flight and it was pretty full. We were very pleasantly surprised to have been upgraded the day before the return flight.
