I work for a small electronics recycling company and often come across these dells with this exact issue. Very interesting to know now what the problem may be caused by. Unfortunately I never have the time to try and learn to repair at work. I am considering purchasing some broken units and learning how to fix them at home. Thanks very much for these videos.

Really enjoyed this one, Sorin. A bit disappointing that such a modern and sleek laptop is so difficult to disassemble. But as usual, you found the way. I always like you when you think of old times and tell us what it was like. Will definitely check out the Chernobyl series you recommended. Sounds good!

I had a 5430 last week, I spent most of the day taking it apart, and putting it back together to replace the cmos battery. I had to completely disassemble the damn thing to get to the battery, I had over half a dozen piles of screws, and the screws were 3 different sizes. I ended up upgrading the CPU while I was there, that was the easiest part. It was prettymuch a full days work just replacing the damn coin cell battery.

Sorin, I have experience with modern Dell laptops and the reason the laptop is not coming on right away after the BIOS battery is removed is because the BIOS is going thru an initialization and figuring out everything on the board. If you have the fan installed it will run it at max speed and cycle multiple times. Sometimes it even errors out and flashes the LED codes at which point you have to unplug and restart. Normally you don't touch the power button until the first screen comes up.

_"You get what you pay for."_ ... Except if you buy a Range Rover, for example: _expensive_ AND _unreliable_ -like quite a few other 'prestige' luxury items, besides (including Macs, imo, assuming Rossmann's repair videos provide a good indication; ex: corrosion issues)! I think the 'you get what you pay for' idiom is more true for necessities (i.e. stuff you actually need), but rarely-if maybe ever-for stuff you desire (things you don't need, but are often suckered into desiring anyway, especially high-status items with perceived symbolic value). _"Value is paying for what you need, not what [you think] you desire",_ is how I would put it.

Dell on its website provides the service manual for each of its laptops, to find it just search on Google for the "laptop name + manual", in my opinion you spend less time consulting it rather than improvising the disassembly, also with the manual there are less risks of damaging the laptop

You are so good, thank's a lot for sharing. By the way i have a presario compaq cq60, external screen works but not internal screen. i did change the screen wire that goes from the laptop to the screen. the converter and the screen and still no internal image. so would it be a motherboard problem? LVDS line or voltage? My 3.3 volts is on tthe screen plug, my 19 volts goes on the plug too and 5 volts i think i saw too i'm not sure is also on the internal plug. External screen works fine. So, since it's not the graphic chip, what do you think i should check? You are the only one i trust to help me. Hoping for an answer. Thank's sorin. Best regards. Serge.

Hi! after doing a repaste on my DEll G2 3590 I got no charging led no fan spin. The first time I tried to power it on I saw the charging port led blinking white, but only once it was too fast for me to see the pattern. Tried Taking out the Bios coin battery, disconnecting the main battery and holding power for a couple of minutes. I checked voltage from charger and from battery and both are good even plugged to laptop I do not see any voltage drops. Does any one has an advice of what I am doing wrong? now I ill just connect to the charger for a couple of hours that the battery was completely dead. Help! I am running out of ideas.

Mr. Sorin: _"I have to remove the screen; because, the hinge, it's over the motherboard. It's a crazy design. . . .So, everything is removed and the motherboard should come out easily, which is not happening-for some reason."_ ...Yep! The disassembly of these Dell Latitude-"Attitude"-laptops is awful: you need to take EVERYTHING apart to get to the motherboard! Misery. I just finished one (E5410), and it took _like_ 2 hours to carefully disassemble and reassemble the f***ing thing; and I still wound up with a "bonus" screw! I even dreamed this morning of finding where the extra screw was supposed to go! PTSD. Next time, I'll try Paul Daniels' technique of using a 15-compartments pillbox to keep track of roughly where each screw comes from, with respect to the laptop's overall layout; Sorin's expert approach of confidently shoving them to the side doesn't work for me! Hehehe. One good thing, though, the online Dell service manual gives _very detailed_ step-by-step instructions-with photos-on how to do the disassembly. Also, the electronics hardware looks pretty solid and full-featured, and I also like their 3 diagnostic LEDs setup (if you've got power).
