Folks, check that your new fan has the red, yellow and black wires going to the connector in the same order as the original. I did this twice without success - both replacement fans had the yellow/black wires reversed from the original. The result was a fan that would spin-up, stop, spin-up, stop... If your replacement wires are wrong, use a needle to push the plastic tabs holding the wires in place back a bit and swap them so they match the original fan wires. Couldn't have gotten through the process at all without his helpful video!

This is by far the best how-to video I've ever come across. Who knew you'd have to take out EVERYTHING in your laptop to get to the fan?

That was the WWAN card and the laptop we were using didn't have it installed originally so we put one in just to make the video. I guess when he we were editing the video we didn't catch that mistake. The video is still correct and shows all the steps, and most people don't have a WWAN card anyway. Best of luck, I hope this helps with your repair.

I needed to buy thermal paste for this. This was great. My fan went a few months after we broke a hinge, and I replaced both at the same time under the hood. Don't forget to record CMOS settings you might have customized, so they can be reentered when you boot up for the first time after you've pulled the CMOS battery.

Thanks for the video! My friend's Dell Latitude D630 was getting really overheated easily and the overheating caused the CPU to go into a low power state which made it slow as molasses. Thanks to this video I was able to disassemble her laptop, vacuum out the giant dust bunnies in and around the fan, and put it back together. Now the fan works perfectly and cools her laptop to the right temperature.

Thanks for this video. I'd like to say I would have managed because I've done things like this so many times. My process though no matter if it's the car, the computer, the fridge.... I go watch someone else do it real quick then go do it just to see if they run into anything. When I realized you were going all the way down to the part and all the way back up I just rolled with you and it really made it a breeze and now I have more time to go play COD. Seriously though, great video!

If you want to clean it thoroughly, yes. Otherwise you can just blow air into the exhaust vents which helps but over time you're just pushing dust into the laptop and that can cause more problems.

Would it be time/effort/money better spent to just replace the fan with a new one instead of cleaning the old one? I'm guessing yes, but I am most curious of your answer/advice. Thanks. Mine is having some good 'ole crunchy sounds at start up occasionally, but not consistently. $4 on the bay for a new one. no worries. Just a time consuming nuisance to get to I see. Oh WELL. Need to do it regardless. crap...

First class! Thank you. Old fan found to be almost seized. If I had to do it again though I would not disconnect the wireless cards as the connectors are very tricky! The cards could dangle off the coax leads. Not even sure the motherboard needs to come out. I think you could probably slide the fan from under the board.

After removing the heat sink, Why does the guy continue to take off ram( memory ) also CPU and a bunch of other parts taken off. Do they really need to take all that off to remove/replace the fan? He even removed the Wlan and modem cable. WHY?

Laptops aren't fun to repair. Manufacturers layer parts very densely to get the laptops to be as small as they are. In this case, the fan got buried under just about everything else. I've had to do the same thing to other laptops (well, netbooks) just to add a stick of RAM. Having said that, I was thinking the same thing as you while watching this video. Now to start the jigsaw puzzle...
