I got a d620 for free. Upgraded CPU to a Core 2 Duo T7600 @ 2.33Ghz and the RAM to 4gb DDR2 667Mhz. Also swapped out the HDD for a SanDisk 80gb SSD. Have Windows 10 64bit Pro running smoothly on it. I would of liked to upgrade the screen to a WXGA+ but the sellers in Europe are asking for 220+ euros (>$250) for one. The upgrades I did cost less than 50 euros

Great video Ryan!I have two D820's in my stash and I need to repair both. One has the well known NVIDIA chipset problem and the other does not detect the Dell Power supply or dock correctly (there is a Dallas chip in both ends)So both faults require motherboard replacement. I tried to install a 250 GB SSD in one today but like you there is a problem getting them to sit correctly to slide into the SATA connector. I also have the Dell D dock which allows the laptop to be dual screen (HDMI+VGA) and even supports installing some PCI cards or a floppy drive. The clincher for me is that they and the dock have serial ports which allows me to use it to connect to older network switches (like many Cisco switches), SAN switches and KVM's. I've never found the serial to usb converters to work work well for me. I believe the 630/830 can go to 8GB ram total. But 4GB sticks are not cheap. I also have an Optiplex 330 upgraded to a C2Q that runs 8GB even though its official limit is 4.

I found 2 working HP xw4300 Workstation on the street the other day they both boot fine and even have a HD 5450 1GB DDR3 PCI-E Graphics Card which is all good to lol

I found one today at work, i work in a secondhand shop, and somebody brought this laptop in, its the fully specced out model, it has the core 2 duo cpu, i put in 4gb of ram and an ssd, it has the high res screen, it has the dedicated geforce go 7200, and the original battery still works fine with almost no cycles what so ever, its a nice laptop and i was looking for a good windows laptop and this will do the job just fine, the only thing it doesn't have is the wwan card, but i don't use that anyway

That's a pretty thicc laptop, gonna have to pick up some cheap dells on ebay at some point to mess around with, bet they're a fun Linux machine. I Never ended up using them as I grew up with thinkpads for laptops, and custom build desktops.

I reattached the nubs with superglue on my D630. I like WXGA lcds and i'm picky so i've been having problems with "Yellowed" lcds or more of an off white.

Swap the motherboard for a D630 and put a T9300 in it! D630 motherboards are like $12. Runs like a beast with Windows 10 and even very Hackintoshable to the latest macOS. But man, I really missed my D830, I had a $100 X9000 Core 2 Extreme in it. 🤤 Definitely one of the best laptops to use and service.

Hello. Thank you for the video! I have a Dell D620 that I use for remote work. Sometimes, when I manage the laptop with just one hand, it´s turn off alone. Seems something related to "flexibility" of it´s chassis. Maybe some connection at motherboard is loose. Did you face something similar? Do you know where is the deffect in the mother board? I already raplaced the motherboard for a new one some years ago and same problem is happening after long usage. Seems a "fadigue" problem.

Certainly could be a cracked joint on the motherboard. I haven't had any issues with mine, but honestly it sits on my shelf 99% of the time unused lol

My d630 runs like a charm on manjaro.

With the parts that you upgraded, is that the furthest this computer can go? I have the same computer and will be upgrading the parts in about 2 weeks. I’ve never done major work on a computer but I do want it to get as up to date as possible so I can start using it daily again.

Just about yeah. I think you can go slightly higher CPU wise but I don't remember the exact model number atm. I don't think I could use a computer this old for anything useful these days lol

hi ryan i have notice there's a spare slot for a w wan when did an upgrade core 2 duo cpu and ssd i think thats a m SATA maybe you should add another 256gb m sata ssd and combine one for windows 7 or 10 and other 2 for raid 0 or 1 3x 256gb combined that is 768gb of storage i think thats cool for you ryan

Nahh that's just the 3G card slot lol, there's no mSATA. The cards towards the top were Bluetooth and the WiFI cards

That's the ambient light sensor, it doesn't have a webcam

Using eBay is amazing right now since they don't prioritize shipments. Amazon is having wait time long as a month for "non-essentials". eBay is controlled completely by the sellers so the delivery time is usually within a week.

@@accordinglyryan cause every laptop I've looked at in the last month turn out to be a chrome book and I'm so done with Chrome books I have one that I try to do 3d print designs on I used for school and halfway thru the process it crashes and says not enough memory but I look at the memory and there's still 12gb available

shit i bet you could get a intel mobile core 2 quad core processor cheap with a 8 or 10 mb cpu cache in that, the core 2 quads are the extream edition of the core 2 line. it would be nice to see how a 2.80 or 3.20ghz quad core would make this laptop run. with that it might be possible to get up to 8 gigs of ram in this laptop. if ddr 2 rams even come in 4 gig single cards,

I upgraded mine to a 2tb SSD a fingerprint reader and Windows 2000. I love the extended battery I have the reg as well both are new core 2 duo t7200 4gb ram even had a working floppy drive. 2000 flies I use Iobit smart defrag for trim nvs 110m as I hate intel gfx for retro gaming from dos with vdmsound and dosbox 2005 2007ish

Money, quarantine and boredom; great combo. Got a couple things to say about my experience with a similar system so I'll be brief. Good choice on dumping the 9c battery. Even though you wouldn't use it as a laptop, it's still much more presentable. The difference between showing up to something in a suit and gym clothes. Secondly, I think those SSDs get some unneeded flak. But hell, for 20 and a old computer, I could care less. I also had the issue where the SSD wasn't detected at first. I traced it down to the drive being so thin it can rest above the SATA ports. Where the hell do I even start with the screens. Well the D630 ATG screens are total ass, so I wouldn't buy another one of those. That was a whole 2 month period of trying parts and such with the result being a normal WXGA+ display in an assembly suited for much bigger displays, nice meme if I say so myself. That brief thing at the beginning was the biggest load of shit, anyways. Keep up the content man.

Not really. I have done it with very similar Core2 laptops. Just upgrade the memory and install an SSD. It’s very usable with latest win10 or a light weight Linux.
