    Bro thanks for the video but do you know how my heart just slows down when people put laptops upside down with no protective surface like spunge to prevent it from being scratched, they scratch like nothing. I always keep the packaging spunges I get when ordering new screens to put laptops on when stripping them

    I recently bought a used ebay Dell Inspiron 5579 2-in-1 laptop. I have been trying to update the SSD and had a pile of hurt. I assumed it was a m.2 NVMe (aren't they all ----- and bought one - 1TB --- before pulling the machine apart and noticing the old SSD was the 'two notch SATA version'). Cloned and installed it anyway but it would not work. I did check to see if a NVMe would work in my machine, and some of the forums said yes (supposedly, according to a Dell technician). NO! That model has to use a SATA SSD (the Dell specs site is vague on the subject and you have to look closely to see SATA). This is important --- even tho this machine was built in 2018, Dell kept it working at the older SATA format BUT they used a single-notch SSD plug on the motherboard (so a NVMe WILL fit) --- never assume anything. 'They say' many machines can use either drive, not this one. My new NVMe hard drive will go into another laptop (that really does not need it, but better that than sitting in a drawer) and I am about to order a SATA SSD hard drive for this machine. Don't make this mistake! An interesting note: the older SATA format 1TB hard drive is considerably more expensive than the newer (and much faster) NVMe 1TB hard drive (both Western Digital). Go figure!

    Hello Michael, thanks for the video. I have the same laptop with the same configuration. I've also installed a new SSD recently and plan to fresh install Win 10 on it but my HDD has 3 partitions (logical drives) in total (including C drive), where 2 of them have lots of data. After installing Win 10 on the SSD, is it possible to only format the C drive from the HDD and keep the other 2 partitions with data untouched? I do not plan to take out the HDD from the laptop like you did and want to keep using it. Thanks.

    Yes but do it once you have Windows installed and running from the SSD. You can do the formatting of the partition in disk management.

    Mike, I have a Dell Inspiron 17 7779 2-in-1. The hard drive went bad so, my plan was to upgrade to a 1 TB Samsung 980 Pro (PCIe 4.0 NVMe) for the primary, and an 870 EVO for storage. With a fresh copy of my OS system that I created with the Dell Tool. Problem is that the after pressing the reset button, the next screen shows the "Reset and Update" area grayed out and states "not available for this computer. The "next" button is also grayed out under the "Optional data transfer" section. Any suggestions? Perhaps it would be better to make an ISO of Windows 10 instead of the "Dell ISO"?

    You can download the installer for Windows 10 from Microsoft for free. Go to Google and search for download Windows 10. The link that has ISO in the description is the right one. On that page you can download the installer. It will create a USB flash drive for you you can use to reinstall Windows 10. You don't have to buy new license either. If it asks you for a license just tell it you'd like to install Windows 10 home or pro whichever you had before and once you're back online it will register the new install of Windows with Microsoft. It gets tied to the motherboard inside the computer.

    @@burtonian74 If you want to use the magician software and it requires AHCI that's fine to change it in the bios. Just remember that if you get a boot error in the future something to check would be that it defaulted back to raid in the bios. You just need to change it back to ahci, do a reboot or two and windows would boot again.

    OK, sounds easy enough. My new DELL Inspirion came with WIN11 which I'm not crazy about. SO, I bought a duplicate M.2 drive which is blank & I built a WIN10 install USB drive. So, it appears I simply install the new drive, plug in the USB & power up. I want to save the WIN11 M.2 in case someday I HAVE to go to WIN11. I am reluctantly leaving WIN7 behind. OK. !

  • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    That seems like an extra step to save the m.2 with Windows 11 on it. You just install Windows 10 on it and if you need 11 the upgrade is free.

    Good video. My ASUS vivobook with Windows home 10 takes 10 or more minutes to startup. It has a M.2 NVME SSD in it. I thought maybe the 8Gb ram was going bad. So I bought new ram. That made the laptop run faster again on startup like it was new. So I decided to add another 8Gb's of ram. The laptop ran great for a few weeks and then it was back to running really slow again. I don't know what is going on with it. I don't know it the ram is bad or what. I swap out the ram by just running only a single 8gb but that doesn't make a difference. I think I will order new SSD. I did not realized that windows home 10 is free to down load. That' a good thing. Can't believe MS did that. One question I have is, can windows still be good on the original ssd, and I could clone it to the new ssd? Or should I just start over with a new fresh install?

  • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    Жыл бұрын

    I would try doing the clone and see if performance increases. If performance is still slow with all the data cloned over to the new SSD at that point I'd recommend a clean reinstall the windows to start over.

  • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    @@MichaelTheComputerGuy NVMe is not listed in the SSD's for the laptop. I did send a email to ASUS asking if the MB was compatible with NVMe SSD. I will wait for a reply. If I don't get one by Monday I'll look for a SATA 2 notched SSD. If I could get into the BIOS menu I could change the boot up to another drive. But I can't get in to it.
