Delete The Background From Glass with GIMP

Sometimes deleting a background to transparency isn’t as simple as it seems. A good example of this would be glass. I’ve gone over various ways to delete backgrounds to transparent with GIMP in the past, but what about for more complicated imagery, like glass? In this instance, it’s not simply a matter of creating a selection around your subject and deleting everything outside of it. With glass, part of the background shows through, so we have to delete it in such a way that the background is removed from the glass, but without removing the glass itself. In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to do just that.

Shout out to Photoshop Training Channel for the inspiration for this video. He originally demonstrated how to do this with Photoshop, so I figured it would be cool to demonstrate how to do so with GIMP (with my own touches added, of course.) You can watch his video here: • The BEST WAY To Select...

    An off-topic query Nick: I want to insert a image into another image. The problem is however that the newly inserted image is much brighter than the background image. Is there a way to capture the "mood" or "atmosphere" of the background image and then apply that to the newly inserted image? Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Unfortunately no. GIMP doesn't work with Smart Objects. There is a free web-based designer called Photopea that can do this for you though. I have a tutorial about it on this channel. I believe it's titled "how to use mockups without Photoshop."

    TOPIC REQUEST-- Hello Nick. I LOVE your tutorials. They are paced perfectly, the pinacle of clarity, and always immediately inspiring. Thank you. My topic request regards how to simulate intaglio engraving of a greyscale portrate. Sometimes the aesthetic is referred to as "scratchboard". The portraits on banknotes is the best example. I have tried adapting the method of halftones to the project without success. Does this sound like it might be a popular topic for a future lesson?

    OK but how would you actually make the glass image look semitransparent, so it could simply be placed on top of any layer and always look like a glass not just grey in the middle?

    This is insanely clever! But you lost me at around 3:28 (change the blend mode to multiply). After that, it was just flying fast over my head at supersonic speed. :) Not your fault. It is me. Even though I have being using GIMP off and on for a couple of years, it has always been limited to changing brightness and contrast LOL!

  • @riconthemove

    I don't understand how the gradient applied on the layer mask at the end (black to white) reduce the blur, i mean shouldn't it be a "alpha channel to white" gradient? Why black?

  • @LogosByNick

    @LogosByNick

    3 жыл бұрын

    It has to do with how layer masks work. In a layer mask, black makes the area transparent and white leaves it opaque.

    Alright glass is cool, but what about fire? Here is how i do it: > Get fire with a black background > Put it in a layer on the top and set the mixing mode to 'addition' > Make a new layer filled with black that is only under the fire layer > Set the mixing mode to 'hard light' and the opacity to some where between 50 and 75 > Paint with a light orange in the areas that you want to be light up by the fire in the scene There you go! nice and easy.

    Great tutorials - I have watched many of them - thank you for posting. However, they would be better if, in addition to telling us what you are doing, you also explained why you are doing it. The tools are, I think, fairly straightforward but your use of layers and masks is not. Not understanding the rationale for each step unfortunately makes these tutorials much more difficult to remember.
