Defying the Odds of Cerebral Palsy... Taryn's Story

Six-year-old Taryn’s sunny disposition is proof that she does not let her medical hardships stand in her way. Her mother, Kathleen, gave birth to Taryn at just 30 weeks, but sadly her twin sister did not survive. Taryn was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that causes motor delays affecting her lower extremities. At just 5 years old, Taryn underwent surgery to loosen her tightened ligaments with the hope that she would be able to walk. She was transferred to Children’s Specialized Hospital for intense inpatient therapy where she began her long road to recovery. Taryn was discharged six weeks later and has made so much progress that she is expected to not only walk, but RUN within a year!

I have cerebral palsy and I'm 51. CP has always been a part of my life, it's just a part of who I am. I have my own apartment and I make a living by selling crafts right now and I hope to be able to sell my stuff on etsy one of these days because I want to make sure that I do it right. I hope that she has a bright future ahead of her.

I have milder cerebral palsy just like this amazing young girl has. Hope she keeps up her optimistic attitude about life as she gets older, because this world wasn't built with accommodations for people who have cerebral palsy and other related disabilities. She also did a great job singing too. My form of cerebral palsy is called spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy as it only affects one side of my body, in this case my left side. I was born at 33 weeks and the brain hemorrhage that I had was a grade 4 (I know they have changed the way they rate how extreme the brain hemorrhage is, but that's neither here or there) and I also developed hydrocephalus as a result of the brain hemorrhage. I'm now a student attending Scottsdale Community College and plan to head to Arizona State University Polytechnic after I'm done. Because of a long period of time when I was having kneecap issues, I had a hard time walking because of constant knee subluxation. I'm happy to say that it's been 3 years since I've had a major surgery done that repaired all these issues I have had developed because of both cerebral palsy and the initial kneecap dislocation.

My little girl has been recently diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, it's just her right leg that's affected. I guess we are very lucky. She's doing so well, turned two today, took her first steps at 19 months on Christmas day. She's walking really well now but her right heel won't touch the ground. Getting fitted for a brace soon. I find it quite confusing as to what caused her condition, I had a very healthy pregnancy and the labour seemed to be okay, she was born by vacuum delivery, was prepped for C Section as precaution. I'm so grateful for my beautiful little girl. Being born is extremely tough on our little ones and going through labour isn't easy either. ❤
