    That sounds like classic Eisner. Disney’s risks were a little different and very innovative. I loved in another video I saw that Michael Eisner saw himself as creative. I’m like ummmmmm, no more like stealing other people’s creativity. If he was creative why does Tomorrowland look like crap? A creative person would’ve never touched the people mover.

    Just for future reference, The oxygen chamber that Jackson was in was one of several that he had donated to a burn ward at a childrens hopsital to treat burn victims. He didn't actually sleep in it, they asked him to get in and demonstrate and then someone ran off with the photos and sold them to tabloids.

    In 1986, tabloids reported that Jackson slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to slow aging, and pictured him lying in a glass box. The claim was untrue, and tabloids reported that he spread the story himself.[119] It was also reported, by the tabloids, that Jackson took female hormone shots to keep his voice high and facial hair wispy, proposed to Elizabeth Taylor and possibly had a shrine of her, and had cosmetic surgery on his eyes. Jackson's manager Frank DiLeo denied all of them, except for Jackson having a chamber. DiLeo added "I don't know if he sleeps in it. I'm not for it. But Michael thinks it's something that's probably healthy for him. He's a bit of a health fanatic."[120]

    Michael said in an interview that the 'oxygen chamber' was a piece of kit he helped design to help burn victims (in case you didn't know, michael was a burn victim himself. Whilst filming a Pepsi commercial his hair was set on fire by one of the stage effects which resulted in him permanently loosing most of his hair which required him to wear wigs, which is why his hair went straight instead of his usual tight curls) and that was him simply laying inside of it. Then someone took a pic without his permission, sold it to the media, and then crazy lies were made up saying he slept in the chamber every night so that he could 'live longer' which was 100% false considering he had a bed that he slept in...and also sadly died in.

  • @taffysaur

    @taffysaur

    That’s all true except I actually believe Michael had Frank DiLeo leak it to the press, along with the story, just to troll them. He liked to experiment with what they’d actually believe about him, seeing as how they’d proved over the course of his whole life up ‘til then that there seemed to be no limits. This is probably what came back to bite him in the ass in the end (neither of which is his fault). It’s easily-disproven if the press had actually wanted to; you can’t wear sneakers in those things, you will start a fire.

    I was fortunate enough to catch the Captain EO tribute at Disneyland in 2011. It is what you said it is, a classic 80s throwback with awesome visuals and I personally loved it as a Lucas, Coppola, and Jackson fan. It was a strange plot but Michael's stardom carried the film. As a millennial, it really put into perspective the MJ hysteria that predated me.

  • @TheJenSolo

    @TheJenSolo

    TheNeers71 That's cool you appreciate the perspective available from "ancient history" haha! I collected MJ pins and put them on every day, ruining a dozen shirts before my mom insisted I could no longer wear them. So I made a scrapbook instead. I remember crying because I wasn't allowed to go to his concerts since I was only 13. In my school, you either liked MJ or Boy George. I secretly liked them both, what a rebel. Anyways, I did get to see Captain EO when it was out originally, when my parents took us to DisneyWorld along with my grandmother. The film pedigree of Lucas & Coppola mattered less to me then, even though I've always been a huge Star Wars nerd, so it's dope to rediscover this now. Well done, Kevin P!

    You just reminded me of the first 3D film I saw, which only aspired to be as coherent as _Captain EO._ It was a post-apocalyptic space Western with an evil wizard (and people think culturejamming wasn't invented until the oughties). There's a scene where the main character has a knife fight with a guy played by Richard Moll (the actor who played Bull on _Night Court_ ), and both characters spend a lot of the time thrusting their knives straight at the camera because _It's in 3D, you know._ :)

I was lucky enough to see Captain EO Tribute when I found myself in the States in 2012; so I got to fulfill something I had always wanted to do since I was a kid. It was brilliant. The story and some of the dialogue is a bit lame yes, but in the theatre with the music pounding and the seats moving and everything, it was effective. So glad I got to see it in that little window of time before it closed.

    Hey there! Your Defunctland videos are great. I am 40 now, and grew up in SoCal as a kid. Needless to say, we spent many days at Disneyland in Anaheim. I used to look forward to the Captain EO experience each and every time we went to the park (even if just to avoid the CA summer heat for a bit in that theater), and everyone here saying what a great piece of the 80s this is, are 100% accurate. Heck, even into the 90s it's significance still held weight. What can I say, we were easily entertained back then: fun and "danceable" music, cool 3D movies, frickin' "la-sers"...what could be better? Even when Captain EO Tribute came out in 2010, I appreciated the ability as an adult to bring my kids to see the show. We may have taken them 2 or 3 times before it, too, closed down. Even they loved it, but maybe slightly brainwashed by me who had pumped it up tremendously before I took them. No matter what shows they have added since, I honestly can't even watch anything else in that same theater if it's not Captain EO. Just doesn't feel right, like ghosts of past still lingering. Look, Michael was magic back then, larger than life, worshiped even, regardless of whatever controversy has popped up since. He was pop legend, a truly iconic figure that we just don't see the likes of today (there have been big, and great, artists since then obviously, but really nobody with that type of global reach into music, fame, and even politics). For Disney to have succeeded in capitalizing on Michael's pop star status for this project was both genius and expected. I know this isn't a discussion on MJ himself, so I don't want to derail the intent of this video. But it was certainly a great time to be a kid, and his star power certainly lent well to my Disney trips, because Captain EO was always one of, if not the, first places I wanted to go at Disneyland. I'll always pour one out for this lost homie...

    I went to Disney World this past summer. And without a doubt, the worst attraction there was the Ellen Degeneres, Bill Nye Energy ride. It was hot and my wife and me went into this ride to cool off. We were warned in the beginning that it was 20 minutes long. But we thought why not. Boy that was twenty minutes we'll never get back. It was strange because it was Ellen twenty years ago. And I mean Ellen, before she came out Ellen. And Bill Nye before people thought he was full out it. We were two of maybe twenty other people there in these huge rotating platforms. I mean each platform could house a hundred people. But there were only twenty there. The ride was boring. Ellen, wasn't funny. Infact she was beyond annoying. The cameo's in it were uncalled for. Why was Jamie Lee Curtis in this? But the worst part of the attraction is when Ellen and Nye went to the time of the dinosaurs and the platforms we were in moved and we were surrounded by all these bad, embarrassingly bad dinosaurs. After it was over we sprinted out of there making fun of it for at least the next half an hour. I heard recently there getting rid of the attraction. Thank you. I don't know how it survived that long. Anyway the reason I told this story is that even though I hated the attraction. i would love to see what the history of it is.

And I am so glad to see it when it came around for the tribute run. XD Love this video Defunctland! this is an awesome one!! Now since I kind of feel an Epcot Vibe. Honey I shrunk the Audience or Journey Into Imagination should be next! :D

    My brother and I managed to catch the tail end of the tribute run in March 2014 at Disneyland. It was a ton of fun. We spent that trip focused on as much classic Disney as we could.

    I was a Michael Jackson fan ever since I was in the second grade. When he died, a part of my soul died with him. I first saw Captain Eo on KZread when people first uploaded it. Then, when I found out that Epcot was bringing back the attraction, I forced my sister to go with me to watch it.

    I remember seeing Captain EO when they brought it back as a tribute to Michael Jackson, I’m glad they did because it was such a cool experience. Maybe I’m in the minority, but it was so much better than Honey I shrunk the audience or Stars Wars Path of the Jedi.

    This video brought back some faint memories of my family and I watching the Captain EO tribute but I didn't know it was a tribute, I was around 8 years old and it was 2012 or 2013, I don't remember cause I was that young, and my dad was and still is a fan of Michael. We went to see it and I thought it was the coolest thing ever at the time, a few years pass and my family hasn't gone to Disney in a while cause, you know the tickets, but we go back when I was 11 or 12 and expected for Captain EO to still be there but it wasn't and my young mind didn't know that the show closed. But in the end that show will always be a wonderful memory I shared with my family especially my dad, he loved it and misses it. Now the only thing I remember from the show is the elephant looking alien and Michael.

    One of my most memorable experiences for this was that little flying fur ball coming out of the screen so close to me, you would always see the audience members always try to grab him because he was just a few feet away from you. The 3D was traditional red and blue originally. When the tribute came out I was so excited to feel that experience again but ultimately was completely let down by the fact they have updated the 3D to be polarized "shoe box" experience, meaning all of the 3D world was located behind the physical screen which also meant that my little flying friend was a good 20 feet away from me instead over the head of the person in front of me. In fact I do not recall anybody trying to reach for him anymore 😥

    I saw this as a teen sometime in the 2010's at Disneyland. The rest of my family was doing something else so I saw it with my dad. We were the only ones in the theater, and we cheered and laughed through the whole thing. Such a good memory.

    Like 90% of Disney fans that watched this in parks, you fail MJ, Lucas, and Coppola when you say "joined him in DEFEATING the supreme leader," at the 12:00 mark of this video. Our hero, Captain EO, inspired a perceived evil to be good. Not with threats or violence, but with song and dance, rainbows and a few hip thrusts. Smile!

    Captain EO still is one of my favorite things that ever was at Disneyland Anaheim. I remember everything about it! It was pretty amazing. Even just watching the commercial now makes me want to go see it. It’s hard to explain unless you were a kid in the 80’s. Micheal was LARGER THAN LIFE.

    *Look, I was there on opening day and I am not really a fan of his at all, but the level of professionalism from him made that event pretty awesome. As cheesy as it all was, I always appreciated his perfectionism in EO. It just made the attraction really good from that standpoint and even as a young person, I understood how his work ethic impacted things. It was pretty awesome to see.*

    Fun Fact regarding Mr. Jackson's music: THE SAME PRODUCER who did the music videos for Thriller and Bad also did the music video for Weird Al's parody of the latter, Fat. Michael gave Al more or less carte blanche to parody his songs, so long as he "Didn't make fun of [him] personally" or "Do the Jackson 5 stuff".

    It was always one of my favorites. I loved the intense audio and visual effects. I missed the tribute mostly because of the prices and I was still recovering from the recession.
