Well there's no story because they've changed it so much throughout the years?

The talking skull is still voiced by Xavier Atencio. The one in the Orlando, however, is voiced by James Arnold Taylor.

The nostalgia I feel when getting on Pirates and Haunted Mansion is something so surreal... My two favorite rides since I was a little kid have such cool history. Thank you for these videos David!

In the 4th Pirates movie, when Barbossa and Jack are on Ponce De Leon's ship trying to get the chalices you see a skeleton on the bed in the room they're in. That scene was inspired by the scene in the grotto at the start of the ride where the Pirates Captain is in his bed looking at his treasure map. My uncle was the Art Director for that Pirates movie and had the idea for that scene.

I'm so glad I was able to see the original "Pirates" in the '70s. To me, it's verging on sacrilege what they did to it in the '90s. I'll always treasure the memory of the original.

one of my favorite effects in this ride is the shadow fight going on in the scene with the ship attacking the port.

23 minute video that felt like, I'm gonna say, 5 mins at most! So interesting and well put together! Well done!

I'm surprised you didn't mention these little secrets, Dave! 1. As you go up the waterfall at the end, look to your left and you'll see a small opening in the wall where rats glare out at you with shiny eyes. 2. Johnny Depp has actually been known to go into the ride dressed as Jack. There are only supposed to be three Jack animatronics on the ride. If you see Jack in the jail scene, you've just seen Johnny Depp acting like an animatronic. Sometimes when doing this, he'll suddenly rush right up the bars, point to a random boat occupant and whisper "Hey! You in the (insert identifying article of clothing, ie. red shirt), help me out of here, would you?"

Excellent work on these videos! The guy on the porch at the beginning of the ride, across from the blue bayou restaurant, used to be holding and playing a banjo. Then he disappeared for a while and was brought back...sans the banjo that can still be heard.

Oh...and the pirate tottering on the barrels in the end scene that you mentioned you thought got removed for unknown reasons? He got moved to the chase scene - he's tottering on the same stacked barrels which now have rum pouring out of them through bullet holes and into the tankards of two other pirates. He's no longer toting a gun, but it's the same animatronic. He's located on the ascending stone stairwell behind the main pirate and the curious dog.

As someone who rode Pirates back in the early days, I'll put in my two cents. As I recall, the point of the skeleton scene in the cove at the beginning was a way of simulating that you were traveling back in time to the heyday of the pirates. Makes perfect sense if you think about it that way; it's reversed on purpose. If my memory isn't tricking me, Pirates was one of the first rides to have guests exit through a gift shop. Almost all of the merchandise was pirate themed, and there was quite a bit of historical information about real pirates to be found. That's something I miss very much -- it wasn't just more of the same stuff found in every other shop like you have now. That was true on Main Street as well. Shops had themes, and sold different merchandise in each. Not many of those shops are left; the magic store is one of the few.

My favorite attraction! Thank you!

I remember going to the park before the ride was built and going up in the Swiss Family Treehouse. I distinctly recall looking out from an upper vantage point in the treehouse and seeing a HUGE pit under construction with earth moving equipment. It seemed gigantic and I remember wondering at the time what it was. I know now that it was the Pirates ride under construction.

8:43 I always thought we can't see him playing the banjo because he was just playing his banjo by ear.

Im working in Magic Kingdom in the gift shop for POC, although not all the info is the same, its still interesting! Thanks Dave! PS. If you ever come to the other coast, make sure to ask the cast members where props from the movies are hidden all over the shop!

The reason the skeletons are first is because the story is about the passengers, not the pirates. You explore a modern bayou, discover the ruins in the caves and eventually go back in time.

My fave attraction when I was 11. I'm 61 now. Awesome memories!

I'm 62 and have the same memories. We went there in 1968 on the classic American family vacation and this ride was the one I remember most. 25 years later, I was riding it with my own kids and the magic was still there, for them and me.

Rich Sutterfield • Your comment made me smile. My husband is 62 and we both agree that we think our age group grew up in the best of times. To be sure, the world was chaotic in its own right (Both Kennedy assassinations; the Viet Nam war; MLK, Jr assassination and civil rights unrest; Kent State massacre, to name just a few), but we were young and didn't yet understand a lot of what went on. We didn't have the technological wizardry that we have now to bring us worldwide happenings in seconds, as we have now. I just remember trick-or-treating in neighborhoods way beyond our own; playing outside from 7 a.m. til dusk on glorious summer days without a care, and no one worrying about where we were or what we were doing; I never heard the word "prejudice" until I was grown, and I was astonished that something that terrible even existed because I had had black and white friends all my life; I could go on but I don't want to sound as if I wore rose-colored glasses... well..maybe I did, but they sure tinted my view of the world for the better. I'm sorry my children grew up in a more pc and over- protected era, and my grandchildren are growing up in a post-9/11 world that is nothing like what I grew up in :( I suppose the good news -- wait, The Good News is we're that much closer to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, and then our troubles will be gone for some but not for most. Count ourselves worthy as that glorious day comes ever closer!

Yes, Redd is the Redhead & she is the lady pirate who bares all in the painting seen early in the attraction.

Fantastic job Dave, as always! The redhead in the painting may be the same redhead in the auction scene. I noticed they both have a mole on their right cheek. I also noticed that same mole on the redhead in the Haunted Mansion portrait.

I HAVE BEEN IN THE DREAM SUITE AND IT IS MAGICAL. each bedroom has a "good night kiss" feature in each bedroom

One more thing... In the long stretch of tunnel from the treasure caves to the boat battle was different. It used to have two male voices heard inside the cave warning the boat riders to not speak about he hidden treasure and that it was cursed. They would say things like "You've seen the cursed treasure! Ye may not survive to pass this way again... Dead Men Tell No Tales". This long tunnel served as a gateway between the 1st main attraction building to the 2nd building of the attraction. Davy Jones was added later by projection on water vapor later after the movies were released and the voices were removed. Later when you ride by the Mayor being drowned, if you listen to the audio the pirates are looking for the same treasure. This is very same treasure you just witnessed in the caves. Now with the POTC update they are asking where Jack Sparrow is so now the story of the attraction has changed. They are not the same pirates in the caves. It was never about telling a story in reverse ether. It was about greedy pirates that hid their gold in caves and died there from the curse and making them obsessed with their treasure. Anyone looking for the treasure will have the same fate. Also, some of the skeletons were just slightly alive (still drinking rum) for comedic effect and possibly due to the curse just like the one still steering the crashed ship on the side hole of the caves. Actually, the haunting voices of the cursed pirates have returned (freshly following upon the heels of Redd becoming a walk-around meet-and-greet once the auction scene was permanently tweaked to eliminate the controversially sexist yet historically accurate "Buy a Bride" aspect entirely), albeit accompanying some new scenes (namely a caged pirate next to octopus Hank from "Finding Dory" holding the keys) and new, brighter thematic lighting in the underground enclave inspired by Carlsbad Caverns. As for Davy Jones, the Culchulu-esque undead pirate projection went back to his infamous locker, as his was a limited engagement within the attraction to begin with.

Man this ride is both calming and exciting at the same time.

Another few changes to note: The cannon ball splashes in the ship attack scene were reduced to a small 3 inch high "blubs" in the water sometime when Michael Eisner took over. I could never understand why this change was made. It wasn't until later when John Lasseter was part of Imagineering that he brought back many of the things from Disneyland's past such as the giant random cannon ball splashes and other details on other attractions like the paintings changing with the lighting flash in the Haunted Mansion. When the Mansion opened this was the original effect and was later changed to a slow transition in later years. Now it is back. Yay!

great video Fresh baked! BUT you forgot one minor detail: In the battle scene, the original captain had a spotlight on him that caused his hat to form a hidden Mickey shadow on the wall behind him. He wasn't always in the front of the boat. During his hidden Mickey Hat days he was positioned near the back of that boat. Other changes I've also noticed: the wench in the auction scene wasn't always in the back left next to the auctioneer. In the mid 1990s she was dressed in green and positioned close to us to the right of us as we pass her. Also, the Captain's treasure filled lair wasn't always on our left. It use to be to our right. And it use to prominently display a golden Masonic square and compass. So basically, through the years some of the scenes have been rearranged and repositioned for various reasons. Also, the figure created to resemble Walt is indeed in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction he's the man with many hats character trying to board two boats seen near Old Bill. That display is poorly lit and easy to miss as we head towards the town on fire pillaging scenes. If you watch the Wonderful World of Disney episode Walt made on behind the scenes story of the attraction, Walt talks about the figure and shows a clear view of him as he appears on the ride.

Just some info about the dog, Walt actually has been seen on camera with their family dog, Lady, however she was a poodle so you're most likely correct that it's a rumor. She was seen in the Disneyland television show promoting "101 Dalmations", so approx 1961 not far from the time that PotC was in concept phase. What is more likely true is that the dog was based on the star of the 1961 Walt Disney film "Grayfriars Bobby". The resemblance is fairly close.

There are also photos of Walt and Lillian with a chow that is sad to be their first family dog. May be pre-disneyland though

I do believe that the skeletons represent the tales of the pirates are coming to life and taking shape. Hence "dead men tell no tales".

As much as people love that auction scene (either for historical accuracy regarding the skullduggery of the skeevy pirates bidding on the potential brides up for grabs or because of it being a thing parkgoers simply grew up on & their resistance to change, even if it ultimately had to happen so the attraction could be less salacious), it was archaic due to the whole "selling humans as cartel" aspect, not to mention the fact that the other controversial scenes of debauchery had already been changed to be more politically correct (that is, mayor Carlos's wife being merely startled rather than fatally shot as she implores her husband to not tell the pirates threatening him where the treasure is hidden/where Captain Jack Sparrow is, the overt alterations made to the Pooped Pirate/Gluttonous Pirate & of course, the rotating table of lecherous pirates chasing the town's beautiful women, although for comedic effect, this came back to bite the pirates once one of the heavyset ladies began pursuing them in earnest herself, however all of that last bit was changed to either show the women angrily chasing the pirates away with a rolling pin, bedpan or some other homemade weapon or else, having the pirates plunder stolen goods, only to be chased out by the women of the area) as well as shoehorn the movie franchise's iconic characters into the boat dark ride attraction which inspired them (Captain Jack Sparrow, Barbossa [replacing the generic pirate captain commanding his crew onboard the Wicked Wench pirate ship to open fire at the Spanish fort garrison across the water], and the short-lived CGI effect of the alternating characters of Davey Jones [whose squid face is Lovecraftian in its design] & _Blackbeard's Ghost_ [which in itself is its own movie independent from the official _POTC_ franchise, but still retains the pirate theme of the ride] that temporarily replaced the misty dark cavern that repeated the sentient Jolly Roger's warning that "Dead Men Tell No Tales" before revealing the accursed treasure that led to the ride showing visitors a pirate's life in reverse [in both the original Disneyland & Tokyo Disneyland], showing visitors what happens when live pirates steal treasure that's been bewitched [Disneyland Paris's version of the ride starts with the live pirates & ends with the scenes of the pirates becoming skeletons], or being its own thing altogether that's entirely linked to the film franchise with only small homages to the original attraction [this is what Shanghai's version of the ride ended up becoming]). And if we're being honest whilst playing devil's advocate here, Redd in her current form is basically Disney's positive equivalent of officially historic lady pirates like Anne Bonnie, which provides a contrast if you looking to compare her to the stubbornly headstrong but yet still predominately kidnapped, wayward blond girl enamored with Orlando Bloom's character from the first _Pirates of the Carribean_ film in 2003, especially since we really don't see the latter in the sequel movies after her appearance in the first, since they predominately focus on Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow & his crew of cursed shipmate marauders aboard their vessel the Black Pearl more than anything else, whereas Redd is a welcome addition, because she gives female fans of the franchise a character to relate to (Note, I'm not saying female fans should want to become lady pirates, I'm just saying Redd gives female fans a character who is on equal footing with the male pirates, since she's a lady pirate herself).

The Paris one I remember has the pirate's lives beforehand and then has the skeletons towards the end, which gives us a clear story; the pirates are shown living lives in debauchery and futility and dying when they let greed consume them.

I was the [original] redhead for one Halloween. Also, I love the green and white pass through door in the extended (and main) waiting queue, when the line is longer you can knock on the white outside part of the door and someone on the inside waiting in line knocks back.

I think maybe the redhead in the painting is Anne Bonny because of her hair appearing straight, and also the fact that she's wearing a pirate hat

She's called Redd on licensed merch and even for her newly added official meet-and-greet CM cosplay.

The story abut the skeletons is true....All of them used to be real skeletons from a University Medical Dept. Eventually they were all replaced except the one on the Captains headboard....How do I know my husband did some engineering for Disney rides back in the 80's.

I must say I love these videos you make. My family and I are obsessed with Disney & go to Walt Disney world almost every spring. It's nice to learn some fun history about them! :)

Thank you for showing the old ride and preserving it for history. The last time I rode it I was surprised at all the changes, definitely prefer the ride of my childhood!

One of my favorite pirate memories...in regards to the animatronics being so awesome was the pirate sitting on the edge of the bridge (WDW). Everyone talked about his hairy leg! "Sooo lifelike". 😉

Here's a theory for the redhead - the song "Pirate Jenny" written by Bertolt Brecht for his Threepenny Opera is sung by either the character Polly, or the prostitute Jenny, depending on which version of the play you read/watch. But regardless its a song about a woman who is a barmaid at a hotel who is constantly (I'm going to assume) tormented by the men who frequent the bar. The whole song is about a pirate ship sailing into the harbor, which Jenny knows is coming and which she seems to be connected to. When she ship enters the harbour and shoots up the town, and all the remaining townspeople are dragged in front of the ship, the pirates on the ship give the responsibility of who is going to live or die to Jenny. Presumably she is the captain of the ship who had been forced to work at the hotel for some reason and is now being rescued by her crew. A similar storyline could be ascribed to the redhead, who was working in the town in a menial position until the pirates came and let her supervise the auction along with the male pirate. I would argue that she may even be the captain of the ship. This is all speculation of course, but the Threepenny Opera did come out in the 20s so ... it existed well before the ride was created.

@@FreshBakedDisney Yes, but both PotC & HM are the anchoring attractions of New Orleans Square at Disneyland, whereas Disney World has PotC firmly in a shrunken Adventureland, with HM in Liberty Square adjacent to the Philadelphia Capitol City Hall replica housing the Hall of Presidents & the building across the way houses the likely temporary Great Muppet Moments in History puppet show envisioned by ultra-nationalistic patriot Sam the Eagle & leader Kermit the Frog that the other Muppets turn into a comedic farce inevitably heckled by crotchety critic duo Statler & Waldorf...Who are likely probably geriatric enough to have been around during genuine Colonial America themselves, thereby giving their witty barbs some added merit. I love when u do these!!!! Seeing the history and secrets of the rides are so fascinating and a good thing to look out for when I go to the parks!! Could you do one for big thunder mountain?

That's well organized with appropriate commentary. I vaguely remember the construction walls for Pirates. Later, during the early part of 1967, my dad picked me up so I could look through the windows of the first building we encountered in the new New Orleans Square. It was empty inside, but we figured out that it had something to do with pirates because of the sign above the door. It was unclear whether it was to be a ride or something else. I often spot Wally Boag as one of the performers in the opening day film. Opening day ceremonies must have been a convenient gig for the stars of the Golden Horseshoe. My dad and I saw Fulton Burley at the opening of America Sings.
