I been loving the Deftones since 95. For a guy who doesn’t do solos he is a genius to keep banging out hit after hit. Definitely doesn’t get the recognition he deserves
Stephen is the reason I picked up extended range guitars. It was the best decision I've made as a musician. Thanks for being you Steph. You've been a huge influence on me for over 15 years. 🤘

After seeing these vid's I have some serious interest in a 7 or 8 string! No idea if I could play one at all, I've alwayst stuck to 6, but damn this looks and sounds so cool :D
@gr3y_eminence
3 жыл бұрын
@@denniswijker7162 I picked up a 7 string a few years back and its managable even with a hand injury. I'm mostly a piano/synth keyboard player and programmer etc (guitar and bass came as needed if no one wanted to play a session). I suggest something I did for many years first though to mess with the lower range see if you like it. If you have a second 6 string guitar, all the better, take a 7 string set or any set of thicker gauges, a set of 6 string 12's work too...the lowest string should be .56-ish to keep tension well enough. Tune the lowest string to a B and the skip the high E. For me it was enough to drop tune to A and barre power chords like that with a Big Muff Sovtek and often a Distortion Pedal followed by a soft compression. The pedal chain was not needed to enjoy the thunderousness at all but distortion was for me! I took out a lot of lower mud frequencies so I could get a shrill tone even at Drop Ab/G# which was the self titled tuning. Still wish they included the "title track" Lovers haha.
@denniswijker7162
3 жыл бұрын
@@gr3y_eminence I have actualy used really low tuning on one of my 6 strings (I think it's current in C, vbut I have I have definitely tuned it to B or A before :) I'm just curious if having an 7 or 8 changes the way you play too. I like (as seen in this vid) how you can do awesome low grooves, and still use high u chord stuff.
@noone1mportant.357

Yep, that's why I got a baritone. I said to myself that I wanted to make heavy riffs like Deftones. Baritone practically same as the seven string minus the high b string.
@gr3y_eminence
3 жыл бұрын
@@denniswijker7162 Yeah for sure that's a good reason to get one. With a 5 string bass or 7 guitar your hand rests differently in my experience; kind of in the middle of the fretboard. It's been a year since I picked up my 7 string and I'm getting curious how originally they were used, I'm guessing it was a prog rock thing, so likewise I wouldn't want to sacrifice the access to the high end or the low groove potential that is there. An 8 String is pretty much part bass right? haha. With a low F# in standard, it's a whole step over a bass's low E. Drop E is probably Steph's tuning. Unless he has one of those 9 strings. I'm in Drop C often aka whole step down Drop D. A lot of White Pony is in that. A good compromise. I went to drop B with a set of 13's and also hit A but that was mushy with a 25" scale guitar. I'm a little addicted to drop tuning thanks to the ease of one finger powerchords but that low string often needs to be muted to do standard position chords. Maybe time to switch it up for me.
I learned this song by ear and i was like "its either frets 4-1 on the B string or 9-6 on the F#, but theres NO WAY hes playing that on the lowest string, its a lot bouncier on the B".... plot twist...
@cartermason8985

Right 🤣🤣 ? Steph is where you expected him the least ! I play it with a 6-string in a Drop C tuning, it does 3 - 0 and 1 - 0 but it doesn't have that low end that we hear on the record ! Some day maybe 🤘😎 !

Fun fact; the scrunchies act as a DIY "fretwarp." It's often used for live recordings when you want to keep unwanted string noise or ringing at bay.
Since this will be the second of the album that he's playing, I would be very happy if he played a few more, maybe This Link Is Dead or Radiant City.
