“Chris” was guilty of a crime that shouldn’t be a crime. He has a work tool, and a closed blade that would take half a second to flip out the blade making the distinction kind of questionable.

See, the reasoning for the law is to prevent the use of such tools as weapons. The actual problem, in my opinion, is that crimes like these should not only be have to prosecuted entirely on intent, but charged on it too. That way if you have a legitimate reason to have the tool, you shouldn't be arrested. And if you are arrested when you shouldn't be, you can sue.

Hopefully I will be a PD in North County San Diego when I graduate law school. I have observed PD's work in court in my area (Vista), and they motivated me to go to law school at this late stage in life. Keep up the good fight.

Don’t know man, doing that kinda sends me off in a pessimistic spiral. Takes a bit to pull myself out of. I start to think not all featherless bipeds are humans.

Some people are unfortunate and some are simply bad people. The ones that refuse to get help, won't quit drinking, won't quit drugs and hurt others at every opportunity are the ones I can't understand how anyone could defend. They are not "helping themselves", they are lying to shrug the responsibility of the things they have done and do not regret doing. Happy for Chris, I also have tools that could be considered weapons by a tyrant cop. Although I have never been in trouble, there are still cops that wish everyone except themselves had a record so they can feel more powerful. Criminal cops.

I am a recovering addict and I know recovery started with me taking responsibilty for my shortcomings and accepting that I had no control over what other people did to me as a child, and forgiving myself. I work with recovering amd non recovering addicts and homeless. The one who grow up and stop being a victim are the ones that make it. But you keep on lying to yourself, we will still be here when you're ready to be responsible for yourself.

I am not nor have I ever been an addict. I loved someone who became addicted after a horrible car crash. Pain was unbearable and seizures were painful. You do not have all the answers. I put my faith in God after loosing my precious Son.

My interpretation is public defenders defend the constitution and the rule of law and defending people is a part of a fair and unbiased trial.

Overworked, underpaid and unloved the life of a public defender however they are fantastic people working for the unfortunate

We need a system that wants to help people in need! Supply therapists and doctors. Not only just to punish them and send them off to jail/prison to repeat the process again.

Honestly, if we did this more we could probably prevent a lot of these sort of crimes in the first place

Helping others that others don't want to help, lend a hand to those that people no one wants to lend a hand to, love them - sounds a lot like Jesus - curious for a CA lawyer

The state failed to do their job in bringing that person to justice. If the case is well investigated and no shortcuts are taken by the people involved...they will be convicted. If they aren't blame the prosecution and police.

Court appointment defense is NOT free.....they show up for free....that's the only difference between a court appointment and a private firm.....a private firm expects money straight away.....public defender's don't charge you till your ur trial is over.....win or lose.....and your bill is like a traffic ticket....if you don't pay or miss a payment they will issue a warrant.....nothing is free

Peacefully carrying a knife in one’s pocket is a crime only in a clearly failed society. Sadly, in a failed society, cowards cling to even the most egregious violations of their personal rights as if outrageous laws will protect them from their irrational fears. Sounds like your there.

Chris was carrying a trade tool; to all fascists every hammer is a violent weapon to bash paranoid citizens with. [Aside in Australia I carried a multitool for my pushbike to a civil case; Security claimed I was trying to take a knife into Court; at least they just held it at X-Ray entry and gave it back when I left.]
