Resumes don’t work. Here’s what we should do instead. | Nicos Marcou | TEDxBayonne
Nicos Marcou takes us on a humorous journey from the inception of resumes to the present day where he addresses the elephant in the room and questions why in such a transformative age, do we solely rely on such a limiting tool as a resume for candidate sourcing. He outlines alternatives and challenges the corporate world to take on a more creative approach that creates a more welcoming corporate culture.
Nicos is a Talent Leader with over 15 years of international experience in talent development and organizational design. Nicos speaks, writes, and consults on leadership, change, and innovation. His work focuses on what leaders need to do, to manage and inspire teams in such a complex and ever-changing world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I love this presentation. People are beginning to think critically about BS that no longer works and offering changes for the better…
The job hunt is the worst part, can confirm that its pretty much a numbers game with all the AI and keyword filters. You really have to tailor your CV every time just to get over the initial hurdle and its difficult not to get demoralised after putting in all the effort. I landed my first 'career' job this year simply because I nailed the interview, it was a small company and the interviewer was personable. To anyone starting their career, my biggest advice would be NEVER give up. I gave up looking for a career starter during the pandemic simply because of demotivation and stagnation but if you stick it out consistently you might just land your dream job. Just make sure to use your time constructively, nothing feels worse than having a blip on your CV (mine was almost 3 years) and feeling shame because you have nothing to show for it.

I love the way he gave us a small history on resumes and then took us step by step analyzing the need to figure out better ways for job applicants and employers to make the job hiring process more fair to both parties. So the right person gets into the right position. The talk was very enjoyable and easy to listen to with a little humor. I think we all have been in this position of writing the best resume. Great job from Mr. Marcou. Would love to hear from him more. Bravo.

I was waiting for a few examples for the job seeker on ways to seek employment without completely depending on the resume. I have large gaps on my resume because I was married for eleven years and raised two sons. Two very important people in my life needed care from me (terminal cancer). I wasn't working then because of legitimate reasons that I should not have to defend. The DaVinci example was so incredible! But he asked why didn't anyone realize what an incredibly talented and intelligent man DaVinci was through his resume? And if DaVinci's talents aren't realized through the resume, why do we presume today's resumes would? Maybe because according to this "talk," DaVinci did not put down his past accomplishments. How would anyone realize the depth of DaVinci's talents without the past accomplishments listed? Still, this was an incredible, necessary topic explained in an interesting and thought provoking narrative.

Good luck; you're going to run into A LOT of jobs that ignore your resume and essentially want you to just fill out their application because they are too lazy to transfer the information themselves. I've called out several companies for essentially wasting my time to put the exact information in my resume on their form, like they don't value the time or effort you've put into that resume; which for me was reaching out to REPUTABLE hr people I know and people who've owned their own businesses.
No, what doesn't work is outdated business models still being used in 2022. If you have a great client just because they may be "overqualified" doesn't mean they shouldn't get a chance; we're in an age where more and more people have life experiences and more education that shouldn't be used as a tool to not give them a chance. Furthermore, many hr are a joke when it comes to hiring and hiring by committee or those who actually do the work would be more beneficial in the workplace.
Much needed conversation. Resumes don't do justice to what we have done especially now that we have non-traditional career paths.

Alot of jobs deny me because of the gap in my resume. Honestly I only worked one job but it was only Seasonal so my time was up. And it's been hard for me to find employment since then. So I actually changed the whole format and template of my resume to see if that helps. But I'm still in the same boat. I think my resume needs to be professionally done but I don't wanna pay anybody to do it. It's just so annoying Honestly at this point I'm ready to just be in my career doing what I love. I'm a writer. Just recently finished my book. Looking to get it published. I also love TV media etc. So my field is all about the arts and entertainment. Honestly I rather have a career not a job But thank you so much for this video. It was helpful

It's all about impressions man. The paper is what sweetens the deal but the way in which you promote yourself without promoting yourself is key . The handshake, the eye contact-putting yourself in social spaces to meet the right people . There's so much more to it than paperwork . You qualify yourself.

I'm in. Now try to get the people doing the hiring to go along
Lol, job applications are the same. About 20 years ago I was turning in job applications, I'm old so apparently we did things differently back in my day but it was common for you to go back to the place you turn in a application roughly a week later and check in. Multiple locations said that they do not review applications on sites, they are shipped off to locations that were in some cases 800 miles away. This is a big problem because our culture changes and very short distances. Just the culture between here and the nearest big city which is only 45 Mi away is the exact opposite of each other. These locations that sent their application to a different location, I never got a job from. Never heard anything back. The places that do actually read the applications and meet to speak with the people. I always get the job, sometimes I have to choose between four jobs.
Congrats, you definitely struck a chord with your talk and I hope it spreads! It's time to change the dry culture of resumes, totally agree. Motivation, personality, talent, and even genius shows up in other forms and therefore needs to be demonstrated and requested differently. The Zeppelin University in Germany took some interesting approaches on how to select the best candidates...

How about the good old fashioned way, face to face interviews, I used to interview people for different positions, I don’t care how good a resume sounds, you only get the true essence of a person when he’s/she’s sitting in front of you & you ask the right questions pertaining to the position, finding a successful candidate also depends on a good interviewer not just the interviewee.

Most times, they use the resume/keyword scanning thing to reduce the number of people they get to interview. But I think they're too lazy to craft a custom system of getting the right set of people. I always like to say I'll never employ anyone based on a piece of paper but by what they know and can do.
Like filling out 7 years residence and employment history for a labor job. Use a background check
Get it Nicos!!! Great talk
A very great piece.
So, for those people coming across this video who actually got their dream job via resume, this won´t apply to you, but there are many who would benefit from a new approach because the standard resume only tells part of the story about a person´s experience, knowledge level and work ethic.
That's true. Awesome talk man.

He makes some fine points. However, I do feel that the job application process for most jobs these days have the resume simply as the entry into the job hiring process. Your resume/credentials get you in the door but it's how you perform in the interview and role-playing scenerios that secure the job.
@packerpf

not even close; it's a matter of "how they feel about you" more than anything performance based..many people in the hiring process also barely have a true comprehension of the job they are hiring for and often don't know what would be a good fit for that role, they just have a quota to fill.

For me the biggest issue is that I am always over qualified.. I have too much experience as I have been a business owner for over 15 years, I automatically threaten the people responsible for reading the resumes (I always turn to small companies when looking for a job) as I could easily do their job as well. Its just sad that small minded people usually control over who gets employed and who dont - which probably is the reason for all the extreme incompetence you see everywhere these days, the wrong people get employed, and the good ones is left without jobs.
D&I should be the goal, not discrimination and injury. Unconscious bias. How do you get past it?

Resumes are just sort of a part of corporate culture. They're probably not the best way to get candidates, and they probably privilege white and male candidates to a degree. But any culture has irrational traditions. This is an irrational tradition of the culture. 🤷🏻 Edit, In other news, I might try going by my middle name on my resume. It's sorta masculine. Turn in ten with my girly first name and ten with my not-so-girly middle name at the top. 🤔
This talk should mention in the title “this is for HR not candidates”. Most people watching it are probably candidates desperate to find a job. The talker don’t help with anything there. He’s just criticizing the current processes and in 1 minute suggests HR to try other avenues.

I'm an ex- headhunter (FORTUNE GROUP/ NYC and 25 other cities). Resumes sent to Indeed, Linked in, and all the other internet websites are just data mining.... you want to give your privacy away ? give them your personal info.... lol! Resumes are useless. Learn to direct market YOURSELF - yourself - There are videos here on YT, and self marketing how-tos all over the internet!.... WHATEVER gets you talking to companies who are hiring, and THEY'RE ALWAYS HIRING is good. DIY people! Not what you say but how you say it! If they say send a Res - ignore them.... get it?
And you need to fit it all on 1 to 2 pages. Otherwise, if it longer, you’ll be dismissed.

Way too vaguely broad and generic, not a mention on how industry affects your resume. Example, I am a hiring manager for a cyber-security team in a tech firm, what applicants have to say to me is radically different than for a retail position. We do in fact use words like “orchestrate” and “spearhead”, it’s part of the industry. Again, his assessment is way too general. We have tools NAMED orchestration. Portfolio, yes, for us it’s GitHub, a blog or some other research/code. Not one of the better Ted talks.
These alternatives are asking candidates to do even more work for free just to be given a yes or no to a job

The job hunting process is extremely frustrating. But telling people (candidate) what all fortune 500 businesses should do in stead of giving them actual useful advice doesn't help
"If you are Honest you are increasing your chances of getting rejceted"...mind it!!!
I think I missed the part: "Here's what we should do instead"
listen, no hate, we need to reconstruct the whole CV thing because far too many good candidates fall in between the chairs only because the company's format or software is whack, and that will take dismantling and rebuilding how our economy and capitalist regimen works. interesting in theory but no applicable at all, back to the drawing board you go.

His solution will only make things worse and even more redundant. Many candidates with the same scores would be fighting for a certain position or a few openings. You'll have to keep updating your scores every 6mo to a year to prove yourself. When companies can/will most likely hire within anyways. It makes sense for companies to just train on the spot. Most jobs could care less about your aspirations, achievements, etc. But Just get the job done.
