Hi, my name is Dr Sia. I am a psychotherapist, lecturer, and researcher. As per usual, I hope you comment, subscribe, and press that bell icon for regular updates.
In this video series I talk about the defense mechanism introjection and common things about it that people do not know and "must" (of course you must not but it makes the title sound more enticing) know. I will release lots of videos about attachment and defense mechanisms so please do check out the whole series if you are interested in defense mechanisms. I hope you find the video useful and that is resonates with you!

    Thank you. My textbook didn’t explain this very well. I think “ignorance” is a lack of knowledge. I think “stupidity” is a lack of intellect. And I think “foolishness” is a lack of wisdom.

    Wow, as a Enneagram number 4, this makes perfect sense! Thanks so much for your very effective explanation of this rather abstract concept...this explains so many things about my life before beginning to recover from my "family of origin" and after discovering and studying my Enneagram type, doing EVOX therapy and also EMDR therapy. I have a theory that my "bipolar 2" diagnosis just represents distorted energies and beliefs I've held about myself because sometimes it feels like I'm actually "disapating" this diagnosis through therapy and perhaps even getting healed (without meds!!!, yay!!) Thanks so much for all the work you do in helping others to find their true self!

    Introspection never made sense to me. I know, i use it alot. But what is this defending against, if it makes me feel like crap? Thank you. This was very helpful. I am never angry. Now I know why. Anger feels dangerous. But it might trying to help me.

    So does it mean basically being compliant /submissive and in agreement with the abuser?

  • @drsia2323

    @drsia2323

    Well introjection is more actually believing those things about self from a time where a child is not even capable to form their own image and never encouraged to (dad says I am worthless so I must be). As a result, a self perception is not even formed and instead any comments made by others that agree with introject (my boss treats me like I am worthless amd he must be right) are heard and anything else is not (my partner treats me with love but he must be wrong). Compliance is more of a yepp yepp thing. Submissive is more of a your wishes and desires over mine thing.

    @@drsia2323 I see. Introjection is belief about self based on another where submissive/compliance is action oriented. Can there be positive introjection? Like someone else told you you're beautiful or smart and you believe it?

    @@yasminevine Yes you are correct! Not sure about positive introjects as defence mechanisms. Perhaps positives can be introjected like a type of conditioning that leads to formation of positive beliefs but not expressed as defenses.

    What is the difference between introjection and identification?

  • @drsia2323

    @drsia2323

    2 жыл бұрын

    Identification is more like taking on characteristics and positions of caretakers whereas introjection is believing in a parents projection. The former could be my dad judged me amd was violent so I judge me and am violent (see also projective identification which is similar but reversed experience) and the latter could be my dad believed I am the devil himself so I believe I am the devil himself. I hope this helps.

    @@drsia2323 Identification: I shame myself with self attacking thoughts the same way attachment figures did. Projective Identification: I sort of induce something in others causing them to feel like a shamed child and verbally attack them. Introjection: I believe the contents of verbal attacks I receive and feel shame. Correct?

    @@Whathuh86 Correct although projective identification in ISTDP is more like I feel in me what I feel the impulse ro do to others. My eye goes blind cause I would like to punch you in the eye sort of thing.
