Defeating Communal Politics: Can Post-Election India Be Made Secular Again? | Dr. Vivek Monteiro

The astonishing setback for Narendra Modi’s BJP in the Indian elections has raised the intriguing question of whether Indian voters have rejected the communal narrative targeting India’s non-Hindu minorities, particularly Muslims. How will the results affect India’s direction both internally and externally? Are there lessons that Pakistan needs to learn?
● About the Speaker:
» Dr. Vivek Monteiro is the State Secretary of CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) for Maharashtra and joint coordinator of the Trade Union Joint Action Committee in the state. With a background in theoretical physics, he earned his BSc from Bombay University, MS from Caltech, and PhD from SUNY Stony Brook, USA. His activism began during the anti-Vietnam War movement in the USA, and upon returning to India in 1974, he became a full-time trade unionist in 1977. Dr. Monteiro is also involved in the people’s science movement and has received awards for his contributions to math and science education, along with being a member of the Maharashtra state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
» The session is moderated by Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy.

It is ironical that a "kattar" Islamic republic is concerned about India losing its secularism. 😅

India is secular because it is 80% Hindu majority. India would be a Islamic Country if India were a 80% Muslims majority.

Isn’t it ironic that a “progressive” from Pakistan like hoodbhoy is mainly focusing on the communal/secular angle of bjp’s defeat. It’s not even in the top 3 issues of this election on which bjp lost on. Otherwise it would be a clean sweep for bjp.

To understand the result of Indian Elections it would have been better to invite a politically impartial person from India to explain rather than member of a political party CPM and INDI Alliance, whose opinion are colored with vested interest. Its like to understand the results of recent Pakistani Election we invite someone who is a member of PTI or JUI or PMLN.

My request to organisers of blackhole is to invite a common citizen of india to talk to audience to get a clear picture .. and since Dr. Hoodbhoy is a scientist by training , he must also invite other leaders across the political spectrum in india to talk and get an clear picture. Nobody in India takes left seriously anymore , they are a relic of past and by 2029 , they will also be out of picture fully

It's very disheartening to see so many Indians question why Pakistanis are bothered about the state of secularism in India, when it's quite evident from the tone of the conversation that this group of Pakistanis want a move towards secularism. It's quite shameful that we're raised to feel so much animosity towards Pakistanis, that we forget that it is also a large country with a diversity of viewpoints. Anyways, kudos the folks hosting these conversations. As an Indian with some Pakistani ancestry, I am rooting for y'all to have a healthy democracy soon.

Learn from Pakistan and learn how not to become like Pakistan!! What made India survive as one and thrive ? And why we should improve on it ? - not that we let indias worst impulses take it down the route of Pakistan. Modi’s campaign was disgusting and so was his entire political history Wish Pakistan changes for the better and India resets its path to what made it better in the first place. Hate has no place - universal human rights and dignity of life should be the goal

I m surprised at ignorant Indians who have no idea about the formation of Pakistan which got its independence purely on religious grounds while NEhru and Gandhi totally maintained the claim that there was no divide between the Muslims and the Hindus thus preaching a secuar India. If BJP is successful in enforcing its Hindutva ideology, it will naturally justify the creation of Pakistan

We have no issues if hindutva in india justifies creation of Pakistan. Don't get fooled by this communist idiot. Most hindus support hindutva and even those hindus who oppose it publicly are not fond of Muslims at all. In short indian society is today extremely hinduised. I am a hindutva supporter and elections really don't determine the advancement of hindutva I india.
