Deer Scouting in Cattail Marsh

Спорт

Scouting for deer hunting early season food sources in a cattail marsh environment. In this type of habitat and especially in the state of MN with an early orange army season and no trail cameras allowed on many state lands, I target an early season approach. Bedding and food can be very isolated, so the key strategy is trying to find areas with low hunter sign, but also isolated bedding to white oak spots with safe access from a common SE early season wind direction.

    Thank you for the detailed explanation of your scouting foray. Too often, we get the "what" - as in what you are doing and seeing, but not the "how" - as in how to interpret what you find while scouting and how to incorporate it into the fall's hunting strategy. Thanks again for taking the time - you looked a bit sweaty at times :)

    Hey Garrett, that was an awesome scouting session. Your session was pretty much about a week later than me when I finished my scouting within probably 10 miles of that area. That last day I still had permafrost in the marsh with no snow but I could read the sign just like I did in March with wet snow conditions. I have 7 setups ready but only 5 will be viable. The other 2 r just spots that I can access with a certain wind that didnt pan out last year. The name of the game is to install a refrigerator unit in my old root cellar after it has been re-insulated & a better roof on it. Mid-September is the best option w/o negative human intrusive variables. Problem is that there isn't just one parking/access area. Many times when u get back away from others that u now have people coming from the opposite direction towards u. Best scenario is to go back a long way but off @ a 90* direction to where the area of access is but in a direction that others arent following. Back in the 90's I had many private land areas that now have houses and/or golf courses. It's rewarding for me to find a spot that I can find a way to keep to myself. Easier to do it on this type of territory compared to a large chunk of private that has as many as 10 property owners that all have very different ways or agendas during hunting season 😀. I have pretty much concluded that a drone operated downwind of an area like this might be the best option. As long as I can operate it from a safe distance for pre-season Intel & also from a good height.

    That first inland with the single tree looks good correct wind hunt it from the ground and that way if a lot of deer coming thru may mean a lot of pressure on the other inland’s. My oldest son hunts public here in Missouri we can leave the stand during the season but no screw in steps so he carries sticks and leaves the stand but he says other people will use his stand

    To my knowledge oak tannin production and therefore browse preference in the upper Midwest goes swamp white, white, bur, reds. Not aware of a significant difference between palatability within the red oak group, maybe red, black, pin? Swamp whites are more preferred and they typically have very low tannin content. Also seems acorns are more bitter in hotter dryer years. Chinkapin oak are really good as well as chestnut and swamp chestnut oaks farther south.

    This my first year hunting a marsh island I have two quick questions. 1) when hunting cattails marshes is it better to wear chest waders or hip boots ? When you are set up in your tree saddle are wearing your hip boots or muck boots? My set up is a tree Saddle and mystery ranch pop up 28 . 2)Are marsh islands still good after Gun season? I live near Milwaukee Wisconsin?

    I generally dislike wearing waders and only use them if I have to. Hip boots seem to be fine a large majority of the time. Waders aren't as breathable or mobile. I've nearly tripped and filled them with water on occasion when going through the marsh. I'll just keep wearing the hip boots once in the saddle. I used to pack in some camo fleece sweatpants to pull on overtop, and if it's cold I'll put bibs on overtop and some artic shield boot covers. The islands can still be ok but often after gun season it seems like they try to hold in areas that have more low lying cover and woody browse. Like dogwood, etc.

    Yes and no. I've done it some in the past and am looking to do it again some more this year in MN, but might stick to compound out of state. I recorded a podcast recently about my path and actions to make sure I'm ready. But to answer your question I'd ideally like to be inside 15 yards. And then depending on the bow, some I'd be comfortable not much further than 15 and other bows like my ILF set up I'd probably be confident to 30 if all of the other variables were good.

    @@DIYSportsman thanks for the reply. I shoot a longbow the likes of which Howard Hill would have used. I ain't no Howard Hill, though, so it's 15 and under for me, also. As best I know, Barry Wensel sets up the same. Pretty good company in which to find oneself.

    I wonder why trail cameras are not allowed?

  • @DIYSportsman

    @DIYSportsman

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think many of those rules, whether it's stands, trimming lanes, trail cams etc are based on the intent of not having people claim and get territorial over spots. You still get that to a certain extent due to human nature, but for some reason MN keeps it a very general "personal equipment" versus having separate rules for stands, cameras, etc. Based on what I usually find, I think some people don't actually realize the rule or interpret it the same. There are no signs at the parking lots outlining cameras specifically.

    It also seems to be specific for certain land types. For instances, WMAs, SMA, wildlife refuges etc might lean one way, while state forests they might be allowed.

    @@hackmo7223 Ever thought about putting a camera up in the tree where u hunt? Many public spots that I elect to hunt r cuz the human presence isn't heavy. ➕️ the camera is attached with paracord above my standheight in video mode so it doubles as another camera angle. If u want it to stay hidden make sure u use it @ the crotch of a branch. I put an old rag wool mitten behind the top of the camera to make sure it angles down @ the right angle. All my spots I setup 10-15 yards from where the logical spot for the deer to use daily or weekly. I avoid open areas & the thicker the better. Using paracord that I throw over a branch will narrow down where your shot will be. I harvest alot of woodvine that I cut in 4 foot lengths to hang in my Prime spots. Never put scent on it, all deer passing will do that for me.
