    That's a good opinion. I get mad when I loose signal...that's why I carry a tripod to keep the phone at least 3 feet from the floor and fish with the other rod freely. Which Lowrance you have? Regards. Fred.

    Nice little Gadget! The Gadget I am looking for is some type of a light weight screen that would attach to your glasses, flip up and down that would communicate via WIFI with with your smart phone or gps and finally allow fisherman to see their smart phone or gps screen in the day light. Of course most of us have polarized glasses which creates another issue. Maybe the same inventor could also allow it to de-polorize when the screen in flipped down. Kind of like the third person viewers that they use with flying drones but not that bulky. Well, just dreaming!!!!! like the Dick Tracy wrist radio that Apple now offers.

    That's actually a pretty good idea! I think its possible with some rnd. If they can make auto darkening lens for welding helmets, it totally seems possible. Probably battery powered, but it would still be cool. Just hope Hobie doesn't run with the idea, because it will be $5000 for the glasses flipper, plus any proprietary attachments.

    Maybe you need to hack the Deeper. How about a little boat with a hole in it that you could put the deeper in and then tow that. The boat would keep the top of the deeper out of the water so you don't loose wifi conectivity. Could even be an actual little toy boat you can tow around with your kayak. :0)

    Neat piece of gear, Steve, and an informative video. Just a thought concerning it not being able to be submerged and get a wifi signal. Maybe the name should be changed from Deeper to "Topside" (and I'm officially claiming ownership of that name idea right now :) ) . Have you returned home to NC now?

    lol! Yes... go register the URL! We leave for home tomorrow. Loved being here in Alabama to help my brother with Dad's home. Project completions beyond the yard work were drywall, door knob replacement, painting rooms, adding dimmer switches, reorganizing furniture, cleaning up the basement, etc... He rents the place on VRBO for Auburn home football games and we needed to tune it up for his guests. Whew!

    I am debating whether I would benefit from a more conventional fish finder in my kayak. Do you have any experience with them, such as when they're more or less useful? If I realize I'll be fishing in places where a fish finder will not work properly or provide its intended benefit, I may just end up saving my money by not purchasing one.

    I fish in very shallow inshore water all the time. I am sending my Helix 7 to my brother for his bass boat since I never use it... not worth the weight and does not give me any info give the depth. The deeper is useful for scouting channels. If I am exploring a new area, I mount it using the flexible arm just to see where the channels are... only interested in depth. Once I know where the channels are but do not know where the fish hang out, I'll throw it upstream to drift the channels when the tide is high enough to allow that. Once I know an area, I know where the fish will be and stop using it.

    That makes sense. I may just save the money for now. Where I typically have taken my kayak is a river which ranges from shin-deep to (roughly) twenty feet that I have confirmed, possibly more but I haven't tested the depth more than sporadically. There are rocks and boulders, and a load of downed trees below the surface, which I will never see in the deeper areas. I also plan to go out to some larger lakes and rivers, which can be sixty feet in some places, with a mostly flat bottom save a few humps and debris piles.

    I have the deeper from the beginning. The black and heavy one. (useful) if this new unit has that lack of signal you noticed I consider it useless...cheaper but useless. I agree with the screen, is crappy. By the way couple of month ago I switched to a new phone so I have to download the app again. Oh Boy...this is bad!! This is user "Not Friendly" it forces me to register. (What I don't want) and visibility (black orange/black interface) is different, darker and ridiculous. It seems They are trying to make people unhappier every day...I am one.

    Why would a human factors engineer recommend the brown/black for an app that is used on a sunny day....

  • @fredfable5655

    @fredfable5655

    I would believe is because the app uses too much battery energy...so, working with a black screen helps to save some energy Vs a white one. The Orange/brown is a collateral color. I think is a matter of...mononeuronal thinking. (they don't think we may want to see the screen at least 5 minutes under the sun, so having an option will be better)

    I have a Helix 7 with side imaging. But, since I fish in shallow water all the time, it's effectiveness is limited - especially when I am anchored fishing a side channel by the weeds. With one of the Deepers, I can cast it out, float it down the channel while tweaking the line to make the detection cone wobble and be larger to find fish. With the Helix, I would have to pedal down the side of these narrow channels to use SI... but the fish would be scared away by then. Given where I fish, I am going to give the Helix to my brother for his bass boat since I do not use it.

    Good point- I’ve been hanging onto my 7” Side View but you have made known its limitations for fishing shallow water flats and shorelines. Though Side view could help find structure offshore, wouldn’t that show up on Navionics mapping?

    Because I fish in shallow water and did not want to spook any fish. Second, I wanted to find the fish in the channel to be able to move to them and cast in the right direction. Sorry you missed that point. The great thing about the Deeper is you can cast it to avoid spooking fish.
