I first heard this composition in 1979 performed by local guys on the dance floor of our county town. They also made some kind of insert from polka there. Reading some of the comments here, I would like to add my thoughts (if I may). Yes, Simon McBride is an excellent guitarist and a good replacement for Steve Morse. I think what gets most people's approval (aside of his skill) is how Simon's gear has a very similar tone to Richie's Deep Purple gear. You can definitely feel that. But as far as a "better" or more "apt" replacement for Steve.... I would add that Deep Purple, themselves chose Steve. They could have picked just about anyone; but they wanted Steve for who he is. Not only as a virtuoso on guitar, but I mean the man has practically written 19 albums (not counting what he has written with Kansas and Deep Purple). He also does things that a keyboardist does and a guitar shouldn't be able to do . And he is the man who put the one-note per string (alternate picking) on the map. He plays Classical and has a wide range of style incorporation. I believe that Deep Purple knows better than anyone else who would fit in the band. And Steve was their pick after Richie; and that alone says something. Of course, Simon is doing a superb job and will keep Purple going . Just my perspective. :)
@flazjsg
Жыл бұрын
I think Steve was a horrible replacement for Ritchie. My guess is they chose Steve in part to spite Ritchie. Ritchie said in a Guitar Magazine interview that the one guy that is so great, he can't figure out what he does is Steve Morse. I believe the guys probably took note of that. But that comment praising Steve from Ritchie Blackmore didn't mean that the guy was a good fit for DP.

@@georgemixis2172 You mean to spite Blackmore? I don't know. I agree with you - that it wouldn't make sense. But given the Blackmore was such a force in DP, I'm sure his endorsement of Morse as a fantastic player would have a lot of weight in the opinions of the other guys. I don't know how anyone with an open mind could listen to SM and think he was a good DP replacement. Unless you completely wanted to change the band's sound. The weird thing is that if you listen to Steve historically, he shines brightest on country-fusion music. What I don't like about his playing is that he never seemed to reach past the level of "conscious competence." He can't just let go and let himself play, which is the "unconscious competence" level that the true greats all seem to be able to summons up. His playing to me is completely predictable and without much feeling. And I do appreciate his command of the instrument - I saw him live in a club in the 1980s and he blew everyone away with his capabilities. He can play all styles well. He never had a hit with Kansas. His solo stuff as well as Dregs material is completely forgettable. He's not good at coming up with signature licks to build songs on. He's also very derivative. I couldn't believe he added medleys of other classic rock acts to DP sets! DP is a classic great band. Why on earth would they want to start doing tributes to their peers. It just shows people that S. Morse sees himself more as a fan than one of the peers to the other greats.
@georgemixis2172
Жыл бұрын
@@flazjsg No, I do not believe that DP hired Steve to spite Blackmore. First of all, there is only one Blackmore. No one could exactly fill his shoes; especially when one considers all of his creative contributions to DP. The band would not have been quite the same without the creative aspect of each musician. At the time they hired Morse, Steve was a very coveted and in demand guitarist. Steve's writing is different from DP's, so speaking for myself, I don't know how well they would have meshed with the established songwriting of the band... as with all things, if Steve would have joined in the late 70's - early 80's they would have evolved in another unique direction and although they would still have been "Deep Purple", it just would have been different since a different contributor would have existed. Steve did not need Purple, he was already established. I just tend to believe that they were impressed with his skills and they wanted him. Would be a good question to have asked Lord; since I believe he was the main thrust to get Morse into the band. Plus, Steve gets along with everybody... unfortunately Blackmore and Gillian had their rough moments. I disagree with you, however that Morse's work with Dregs is forgettable. His variety, and ability to not be another "4-chord rocker" puts him on another level. Have you listened to "What If"? Nice variety, and very unlimited chord progressions. In the end, I suppose one's preference can dictate our decisions; but I appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts! Oh, in case you haven't heard, you should check out Morse's "Simple Simon" . I think you might appreciate the live version, so if it's ok, I will leave it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXqrm8eSqZDcY6w.html take care!

Yes, I agree with you. At Steve Morse, the guitar is always squeaking and howling; he doesn't can the handwork of playing guitar and he never had any feeling of hard rock, rhytmn and blues. It were lost years for Gillan, Paice and Glover ... and for Lord.

@flazjsg

@georgemixis2172

I'm watching video titled "Deep Purple Lazy 2022". On right section of youtube i see in recommended videos "Deep Purple Lazy 1972". 50 years. Just say this numbers loud. FIFTY YEARS. Two members from 1972 still playing it after 50 years. It is wonderful. Amazing. Scary in some terms. Incredible. And they still play it with taste and style.

@@Mxulin shame on me. Totally forgot about Master Glover, like he was and is always behind bassline.
I don´t have words. Congratulations for your music
Simon is a great replacement. I understand some people don't see Steve Morse as a good fit in Deep Purple, but you really need to listen to their recent catalog of original music. The band has been having a great time writing new music together...I hope they can continue when Steve's wife gets a clean bill of health. Best wishes to the family!

Steve Morse is a true innovator in his own right. He never was or will be a Ritchie impersonator. Love Morse era Purple. Seems like the stubborn fans who want Ritchie, have the same temperament as Ritchie. I still listen to early Purple. I also have all the Morse albums as well.

20 years and finally a guitarist for the band 🎸🎸🎸
I never understood Steve Morse in Deep Purple... But this guy... whoever he is... is actually playing the RIFFS! Obviously with a real appreciation for Richie Blackmore... Yea! Damn! It's good to hear! Been way to long... Steve Morse sounds better doing his own thing... which is awesome too.

Yes, I agree with you. At Steve Morse, the guitar is always squeaking and howling; he doesn't can the handwork of playing guitar and he never had any feeling of hard rock, rhytmn and blues. It were lost years for Gillan, Paice and Glover ... and for Lord.

You articulated my thoughts perfectly!
I remember first seeing Simon on a local TV talent show here in Northern Ireland many years ago when he was a young teenager . Simon played a Joe Satriani song ( 'Satch Boogie' I believe) flawlessly. I knew that he would go on to big things and so it has proved !
Они по прежнему мега круты!👍👍👍
Deep Purple !!!! Forever our beloved legend !! I hope you will perform with us for a long time to come! I heard you were in Istanbul, beautiful! I am grateful to you even for the strumming of guitars, you are the best of the best! I wish the whole band a lot of health and concerts. With love, Zdenek 🙏👌👌👌👌♥️♥️🇸🇰🇸🇰
This is so much more Purple! Love it!
