Ritchie was satisfied here because Gillan's voice was great at this concert. But after, some times in 1985 and on, his voice was terrible. This annoyed Blackmore because he knew that Ian just wanted to party and not take proper care of his throat.

  • @aquamarine99911

So true. People tend to blame Ritchie, and Gillan always comes across well - i.e. smart and urbane - in interviews. But he's an idiot not to take care of his instrument (and remember his lyrics). I had the experience in a cover band where we found out the singer could sing really high, and we did the Police's Walking on the Moon; It sounded great in rehearsal. Then at the gig, the singer sounded like crap, and it was embarrassing to have to play the song to its conclusion. The singer later admitted he had gone out drinking the night before. Why??? Don't you get enough of a charge out of being able to sing that well in front of people. Still pisses me off, years later.

Ritchie is being sarcastic with Gillan at that moment. I believe Gillan interrupting solos actually annoyed Ritchie. Fans love to hear those solos and Gillan actually interrupts that at times, so possibly viewed as rude, one of the many things they don't get along over. Ritchie Blackmore has said numerous times, music is a serious thing for him... and he has always gotten aggrevated if something was going wrong with the show whether it be the soundboard, or cameras blocking fans view or something backstage etc.. It seems to suck the motivation out of him and he'd just get pissed and figure "fuck it" Being honest, I do think Gillan is a big instigator but I've heard in the days that Ritchie could be a real asshole too, so they just knew how to push each others buttons. But Gillan would do it while on stage which was no place for it, when people have paid to see them. The moment Gillan would realize something he was doing annoyed Blackmore, he'd push it. Their smiles to one another on stage were mostly not friendly... more like "oh yeh you prick?" Being in that band must have been like walking on eggshells to be honest... at some point the $$$ isn't worth it

I saw them on this tour. Magnificent! I've seen tons of bands, but Deep Purple was the loudest show I've ever been to. My ears were ringing & hurt TWO days later. Only time that's ever happened to me. My friend had his fingers in his ears for most of the concert, and we were several sections away from the stage. The local newspaper review mentioned that about 30 people were treated for hearing damage at the arena that night. But...it was worth it! What a show, they were in top form.
