CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The comet makes impact in spectacular fashion, destroying the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a "nuclear winter" as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end. President Beck reveals Plan B: a cavernous underground retreat constructed to hold one million Americans, with most to be selected through a national lottery. Since teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, his family gets a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents will be left behind. Meanwhile, still in space, Spurgeon Tanner devises a plan for a kamikaze-styled operation that could possibly save the Earth. Special visual effects by Scott Farrar and Industrial Light & Magic.

    I just love how there’s no music throughout this entire scene and it doesn’t stay with one shot too long or show too many things happening. Also the story is actually a story that’s original and takes itself seriously. It’s what makes Deep Impact the magnum opus of natural disaster movies, above 2012, Day After Tomorrow, and Armageddon.

    I remember seeing this at the theaters. It wasn't an 'action' movie like Armageddon. It wasn't overly melodramatic. And the 'disaster' part leading up to the end was somber. Essentially the way the movie played it, you experienced the exact same emotions as the characters. First fear, then hope, then hoplessness up to the first comet hitting. You deflated every time the President delivered bad news. You seriously had no idea how it was all going to play out. By the time the first comet hit, everyone in the theater wasn't like 'woah!' like with so many disaster movies. It was quiet, just like everyone on screen watching it fly past to do what it was going to do. Definitely my favorite disaster movie. All of it felt real.

    1:48 in the aerial view you can see people on the rooftops running to the other side to get away from the wave... But if you look very closely, it looks like the people were trying to run back inside… that scene alone gave me nightmares as a kid. I dreamed I climbed to the top of a building to get away from the wave, but the way was still too high, and the wave crashed into the building throwing me off the roof and I remember being tossed around against buildings and objects and drowning at the the same time… it was one of the most vivid nightmares I had as a kid. And it was just from that scene alone.

    Well they did stay in the physical realm of possibility, except for that they overshot the realistic capability of some scenes that make look just completely fake. The Tsunami waves wouldn't happen like depicted, because for a tsunami to be generated you need to disrupt the entire water column. A Comet or Asteroid for that matter would be having the same effect as dropping a rock in a lake.

    what really bothers me is the sheer power of that shockwave that appeared but randomly it disappears a few seconds later not to be seen. a shockwave like that most likely destroys most glass + building structures. people would already either be dead or deaf from the shockwave. but we see the actors and buildings perfectly fine. shows how little the movie was thought through even though I didn't watch it all

  • @strikeleather6503

    @strikeleather6503

    Exactly. That shockwave is like a nuclear blast wave x 1000. It would destroy and flatten everything in its path. Then the thermal pulse of the asteroid would follow. Then the water afterwards. It would be utter destruction.

Honestly, idk what to do other than just live life while it’s still here.
