CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The crew of the Messiah gives the ultimate sacrifice to save humankind.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a "nuclear winter" as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end. President Beck reveals Plan B: a cavernous underground retreat constructed to hold one million Americans, with most to be selected through a national lottery. Since teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, his family gets a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents will be left behind. Meanwhile, still in space, Spurgeon Tanner devises a plan for a kamikaze-styled operation that could possibly save the Earth. Special visual effects by Scott Farrar and Industrial Light & Magic.

I like how they all faced death differently: Tanner's mind was on the Job, piloting the Spaceship but had a certain look of anticipation on his face. Monash was happy being with his family. Baker closed her eyes, letting go. Simon steeled himself. And Tulchinsky died with his eyes wide open, as if challenging the Asteroid he's about to blow to bits.

Especially since it was the first time meeting his son, that he was unable to see due to the sun permanently blinding him. The sweetest part was Tanner giving his heartfelt emotion to his late wife "Ever since we've been apart, every day, I think about her. Mary, I'm coming home.". And Andy's reaction to realizing the only chance to save Earth was a suicide mission was rather comical. "Look at the bright side. We'll all have high schools named after us."

But as i grew older i learned more and more about "acting" and what it means for a movie and you can do much for a movie what takes it to another level or you just make quick decisions (like Armagedon). This scene is so heartbreaking, I honestly can't hold the tears
I really like this ending because it’s tone is very emotional, knowing that these people sacrificed themselves to save the Earth from all life being wiped clean. It’s something that really pulls at your heartstrings. I honestly prefer this to the asteroid destruction scene from Armageddon if I’m honest.
I remember seeing this in theaters when I was in high school back in 1998 and absolutely loving it.
If you think about it, this is easily one of the greatest sacrifices in all of movie history.
I've always thought that if I had to die in this scenario, I'd want to go out like Robert Duvall's character, specifically -- not only sacrificing myself for all of humanity in a painless death like the rest of the crew, but in control right up until the end. Nothing to focus on but a simple task with incalculable importance, just keeping the ship pointed straight and true on the kamikaze run of all time.
A blind astronaut saying goodbye to his new born baby through the cam before sacrifice. That's the most dramatic scene I ever seen.
1:06 Thank you Messiah crew...Thank you 😢😭😂💖🚀

*ya that scene and the one where the families of the astronauts is sad... but the saddest part to me has always been Oren saying bye to his baby*
