My first computer, a prebuilt HP from a shop, about 15-20 years ago, used to get really loud in the summer and I didn't have a clue why. Obviously I knew it was something to do with the heat, but I didn't have a clue about heatsinks, fans, etc. I think the fan must have just had 2 modes, low and full blast! It wasn't even that dirty since it was fairly new, just a stupid prebuilt cheap computer. Definitely a good idea to build your own PC though, so that you know what all the components are and what they do.

I cleaned our family pc a while back and it had 14 years' worth of caked-on dust inside. I HAD to open the power supply to clean it. I didn't blast it with an air compressor bc here in the south it's far too humid outside so I did it the hard way. First, I vacuumed the majority of the surface dust, then I went in with tweezers and pulled dust out of the nooks and crannies, super satisfying btw. Then I vacuumed again and used an ultra-soft car detailing brush made for delicate surfaces to get the remaining I still couldn't reach with the tweezers. After removing all the dust, I used a kid's toothbrush (bc it has super soft bristles) and lots of q-tips with isopropyl alcohol to clean all the dust residue. The PSU def took the longest to clean but was very satisfying to do. After cleaning and reassembling everything else, the computer now works perfectly!

I’ve been recommending to lift rigs off the floor. Make yourself a wooden platform you can support on a wall with a french cleat. This will reduce the dust build up in your system. Also, if you have dogs it will also keep dog hair out of your system. If you can’t put the system on the wall, put it up on a desk or another piece of furniture off the floor. The higher off the floor the better.

It brought me so much joy when you upgraded her power supply! We all have ran into this problem, where we buy used parts to save money and small issues tend to come up from doing so. Like her not getting the simple cable because the last guy didn’t need it. Usually for me this is something that would need ordered then you play the waiting game. The fact that you could just fix the problem immediately instead of telling her she needs to order a $10 wire was such a solid thing to do! You definitely earned a sub with bells from me! Also stay away from aftermarket CPU coolers with a similar design; a good case and enough fans (with the proper orientation to promote airflow) are also important...

Damn, those burnt caps on the back of the GPU. I considered myself semi retired from the tech support field, but this year I've cleaned and installed more work for friends and family that on the last 5 years, got a lot of nasty pictures of hard paste, dust mattress (yeah, mattress, not bunnies), people that tore down their laptops because they couldn't tolerate the fans and brought to me Sunday afternoon "uhhh... can you fix it? I need it to remote work Monday morning". After that they're like "wait, so the computer isn't supposed to sound like a turbo engine? I can't even listen to it and is so fast, what did you do?" heavy thermal throttling, and was usable even with an HDD after cleaning, I begged them to get an SSD because I was out of them (I buy some every now and then, again, for friends and family). Just a question, what thickness pads do you use on GPU and VRM (if it's even the same), see you changed some and leave others, I assume you didn't had that same thickness

Got a great tip for anyone cleaning their PCs. Use a vacuum with brush attachment! You really can’t do any harm with that. Also - do not remove Intel CPU and expose that fragile LGA. Also I know paper towels are very intriguing to use on pcb’s but they’ll tear on every piece that’s left behind. You can use vacuum after again tho.

Great channel Greg! FYI 3:45 It is much more safe and effective to use a clean soft paint brush brush to dust here , I have seen small surface mount components get snagged using this method and pop off ask me how I know. 😅... I use an air compressor (cans are expensive and they are useless) outside for the bulk stuff then with a soft brush in conjunction with the compressed air works the best for me.

Great video idea! For the next Episodes try and get an aircompressor (better for the environment than those air cans and more power). Also try and get some anti static brushes. They make cleaning off dust and stuff way easier.

I'll never understand this trend now of making the cables go down, like, there's already sagging happening, and instead of helping reduce it by making the cables go up you worsen it? For what? A bit of aesthetics? Which is arguable since i don't really like how it looks.

@@Adam-tt7kx Hobeslty, I think it has as much to do with old boards as it does cable orientation. On my past build, my MSI 1070 (very similar to the one in video) had sag issues. On the new build, my Gigabyte 3070 has literally no visible sag despite being WAY chunkier
