Its 2Hgo(by heating) ➡️ 2Hg+o2⬆️
We did this in elementary school in the 60's. I believe it was 5th grade. We spent a couple days experimenting with Hg. Can you even imagine that in today's world?

Wow, that is so wild. I can't imagine ever doing that in class XD

WHAT??? Our school brings us to lab.. like, once every 1.5 months??? in high school?? huh????

@@QUBIQUBED They spent a lot more time teaching and a lot less time being "equal" when I went to school. You couldn't keep up, you got left behind and did that grade over again. If you teach something new each day, instead of going over the same thing for the entire week, you get a lot more done. We had hydrology labs, meteorological labs, chemistry labs, music, history (ancient and modern), math, english, literature and more in elementary school. Middle school then became very diverse with the additions of print, wood, machine, photography and electronics shops. And I never went to a school that didn't have an extensive library and resource center.
Thank you for posting and letting available. I'm from São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State,Brazil. I'm studying Chemistry LR.
Wouldn't the equation be 2HgO = 2Hg + O2? The end of the video shows it without the 2 in front of Mercury (II) Oxide.

How would you explain that when HgO is heated, it gives off the oxygen, but when you heat ZnO or CdO (both group 12 elements like Hg) heating it just keeps it oxidised? I know that it has something to do with how noble the metals are, but how would you determine wether a reaction like that happens or not, the Nernst equation doesn't work here, as we are not in a solution and are dealing with solids.
I have a silver color and I want to change to red how the way
Thank you!
are you sure u replied on the right post?

is oxygen the only (clear & odorless) gas that has this effect on the splint?
@kainoa_written
3 жыл бұрын
The splint is fuel and the gas is the oxidizer. Other gases could also facilitate the reaction, but we know the mixture in this case unlike a natural, complex mixture3

would it be possible to make thermite with mercury oxide
@joel.759
4 жыл бұрын
First of all: it is possible but it is not the best choice The reaction will definitely not be spectacular as Mercury has such a low activity. it is not worth money to buy it and the reaction produces highly toxic mercury vapour.

But isn't elementary Mercury highly volatile? Wouldn't some of that 'oxygen collected' contain mercury as well???
@fuongbregas

Oxygen is collected through water as bubbles, I don't think Hg can float up.

There will be some Mercury vapour that makes it through, even if it is not enough to condense into droplets of the metal
