Years ago I saw an experiment to produce Mercury from Mercurochrome, a topical antiseptic that is now hard to find. You add Mercurochrome and baking soda to a small dish shaped from Aluminum foil. Next, put a penny in the dish and heat on the kitchen stove. The penny is plated with Mercury and takes on a silvery finish

Typically red dirt contains iron oxide rather than cinnabar, the ore of mercury which is also red. The easiest way to extract it safely is to use a metal still to boil off and collect the mercury, because any chemical method creates incredibly toxic mercury salts which are more dangerous.

I can get it for you. But only in North America and only smaller amounts. No large amounts.

Maybe it return to it's orange color due to any ambient UV light.

Can you link the video? Sounds a lot like editing and Photoshop type trickery to me. I've yet to see Mercury display such an array of colors. I've seen black, yellow, red, brown, a sort of yellowish green and white. In fact, the majority of mercury compounds that come to mind are white, at least half of them anyways. So I'm guessing the author of said video may have been either making a fake, or talking about other things and we're missing some info? Either could be the case as mercury is at the center of many myths, inconsistencies and faked videos. Now that's not to say that it can't be mixed with other things to give it a color it doesn't normally exhibit. But that's not really mercury making it that color, it's more like a dye than anything. But yeah, we'd have to see the video that you speak of to know which it really is that you saw.

There is no such thing as "red mercury" in the sense of mercury in its elemental form. "Red mercury" refers to many compounds of mercury that form the red color--this includes, but isn't limited to, mercuric oxide from this video. Mercuric oxide, in particular, is very big in Near and Middle Eastern cultures to make vibrant red paints because of its great color, and in some "health remedies." Using it for these reasons though is entirely inadvisable. Mercuric oxide is more bioavailable than other forms of mercury, and it MUST be handled with care and NOT be consumed. No, neither mercury metal nor mercury oxide are really much soluble in water. Mercury oxide will react with acidic water solution and release mercury II cation though.

you can only react it with other things to produce other compounds. The met itself does not turn red, but rather combines with other elements to produce compounds in chemical reactions that emit different wave lengths of light that give it a different color than the starting materials.

Atomized Mercury will appear black because it is so small. Just like with tiny particles of Gold being black. It will stay that color until there is enough to form a mass large enough to reflect all visible wavelengths of light, essentially turning into a mirror as we normally see it. If you could zoom in on it, it would still look silver until you got down to sizes smaller than the length of the waves of light. Are you picking up what I'm throwing down? That's about as good as I can state it.
