I find that a steel vessel and some teflon tape does the job adequately enough. ;) The actual DOT approved mercury flask, the green ones in my videos that are rated for 60 mph crash and brief fire exposure, are a bit expensive though... I'm considering taking an old fire extinguisher and seeing if I can re-purpose that for all the mercury I don't have proper flasks for.

If you have free elemental mercury spilled. Suck it up with an eyedropper and keep it for reuse. if you cannot get to it all in a spil, like you spill it on the ground use a bit of zinc powder, this will form an alloy with any mercury left and this is much less toxic to the environment. If you want then you can collect the alloy and contaminated dirt as much as possible and store it until you can turn it in the the proper disposal centers , your local recycle center may take it but if not, a hazardous material disposal center would be the place. Many states in the US (not all of them)are lax on some toxic chemicals as long as they are small household quantities. But even then would normally convert dangerous chemicals to less dangerous ones if I need to toss it. Keep in mind folks throw out tons of CFLs each with a drop of mercury inside, lead items, cadmium contaminated items, you name the toxic element, I bet we have folks throwing it away in a dumpster. However I feel chemists that know a bit better would at least try to the best of their ability to avoid introducing a dangerous substance to the environment.

Why would you do that?

If in long term storage underwater contaminates come out of the mercury and dirty the water isn't that a good argument to storage underwater? Seems like it's cleaning it more.

I'm not 100% certain about this, but I'm pretty sure the dirt in the water is mercury oxides being formed from the water basically rusting it if you know what I mean. Not 100% on that though

@@greenthizzle4Could be the case, but Mercury(II) oxide, or HgO has very minute solubility in water, something like 5 mg / 100 mL of water - maybe it is still enough to make it murky.

Since you are experienced at 3D printing model editing, you could add some ring harness on top of the bottle that will make it not rattle around, but can easily be pulled of in case you need the aesthetics

Thank you for your video's. I'm a retired guy and I can recall my grandfather, a gold miner, telling me how they would use a deer hide chamey to extract water and debre from their mercury. It was important to put the hide side out, put the dirty HG into the meat side and squeeze it threw. I would be interested in your thought on this, Bill in B.C. Canada

I remember in my school we were just handed a glass bottle with mercury. No shatter proof, no twice packed. It was just passed around to demonstrate its density with the bottle being almost to heavy to lift with one hand. Looking back at this I feel like that was maybe a bit unsafe. I mean we were kids, anyone could have dropped it as no one expected the weight of it.

You could glue some silicone rubber on the inside of the plastic container, so it's shock-proof and remains safe. As always nice video it's nice to have a little lab time like this.

The paper towel being repelled by the mercury just blew my mind! Holy crap 😮

I think storing the Hg under H2O is a good idea for several reasons. One, if you find your water getting cloudy after several months, you are simply cleaning it better without any effort. Second, and as you stated in your other video, this will help depress the mercury vapor in your bottle (and even long term, as the number of molecular collisions in water would be substantially higher than in air suppressing vapor buildup). Either way, great set of videos!

great thought, but in practice, water is still not that useful. #1 if your mercury is so dirty that plain water is able to passively get impurities out, then you DEFINITELY need to inspect your mercury and container and CLEAN them, that _shouldn't_ happen, even relatively pure mercury doesn't tarnish, and shouldn't put that much junk into the water. #2 um, no? idk why you are still using the advice from his _previous_ video, when he addressed the _issue_ with that advice in _this_ video, specifically why it doesn't matter if there was water for long term storage. water only slows the process, as long as its left for long enough, the bottle will come up to the saturated vapor concentration anyways. for short term storage water can be helpful because it effectively reduces vapor, but for long term, the water isn't a perfect block, and the vapor pressure will still build up until it reaches the standard concentration for mercury at room temp. #3 you are constantly making a dangerous contaminated liquid side-product that can potentially be spilled and must be disposed of properly, which of course is not ideal. #4 the amount of vapor you are trying to prevent is also pretty insignificant, just walk outside, open the container, let out the vapor in the breeze, then return inside. alternatively dont use such an oversized container, if the container is full of mercury, there is no room for vapor. #5 you can store the mercury in a chemistry fridge (which he has) and it wont evaporate nearly as much.

I've been working for a while now with thermochromic pigments, I was wondering if there was an easy way to synthesize them.

For a bit of added safety maybe packing the back half of the container and maybe even be able to use a packing material that makes the mercury stand out.

Could you use molecular sieves to dry the mercury?

You could add Vigreux column to help increase purity.

It would be neat to see you make a basic plastic. Because you made potato starch before which can be used in such a thing, or i'm sure you have many other options as well. But regardless would be an interesting video to see.

How do you clean your Hg contaminated beakers? Do you keep them specifically for mercury or do you clean them and use them for other reactions?

I don't remember how I found this channel and I know absolutely NOTHING about chemistry I was absolute abysmal at it in school but I've managed to eat through all your videos in like 2 days and I can't get enough. You might aswell be talking Martian but it still fascinates me and helps me sleep... not meant in an offensive way :)

It feels like in a number of videos he essentially says "I should probably do X, but I don't wanna".

After my grandma died we found that she had a 600 ml bottle of mercury in her basement. Glass bottle, stored inside a cardboard tube with packing peanuts. She was a scientist, so she had a lot of weird stuff, like some natural asbestos, but that 8 kg bottle of mercury was probably the weirdest/most dangerous. Pretty awesome though.

BTW she died in 96, but probably had that bottle since about 1948, so I think it keeps pretty well.

NileRed My dad just took it to a hazardous waste disposal place. I'd have kept it, but I was only 16 then so I didn't get a say.

What contaminants are left and how do you get rid of them?

How about a polystyrene foam ring around the top or neck of the bottle as a spacer between it and your plastic secondary? It won't obstruct the view, and it'll provide some stability.

even with all that was a good idea as well and will probably pretty much eliminate any Fusion of mercury vapor from your bottle. that said the water wasn't really a bad idea. Yes the gas the top eventually come to equilibrium, but if your goal is to minimize the fusion of the bottle the rate at which it approaches equilibrium matters because the Mercury escaping from the bottle lowers the equilibrium value. The final equilibrium is a function of the rate at which Mercury is making it to the gas phase against the rate at which Mercury is escaping the bottle. the water would lower the rate at which Mercury is making it to the gas phase. Probably buy a lot comma since there are no common intermolecular forces between Mercury atoms and water molecules while both water and Mercury have strong cohesive forces hydrogen bonding and metallic bonding respectively. I would expect the partition coefficient to be very big. still it was interesting watching you dry out the Mercury. and I appreciate the caution with which she treated it no you didn't talk at all about the ventilation you were using. do you know what the regulations are concerning the disposal of Cinnabar, and does mercury sulfide count as Cinnabar?

How about using silica gel or table salt in a side container to dry out the mercury?

I believe that gold dissolves in mercury. Can you do an experiment to dissolve gold in mercury first, and then recover the gold by distill mercury out? Thank you.

What would be the procedure of you dropped the bottle and it shattered?

Would it be a useful idea to fill the bottle with xenon, or sulphur hexafluoride?

Is sulfur better than Iron Chloride? What are the advantages? Also I think that water doesn't stops mercury vapors...

Excellent video! A minor correction: steel is definitely NOT a good container for mercury or mercury salts. A plastic bottle is the recommended storage for mercury.

A lot of places actually recommended steel. I agree though, plastic is the best.

You could always save some of the packaging foam sheets from randomly purchased items and the next time you are designing a containment system, take vessel 1 and trace a circle in the foam with said vessel, then take vessel 2 and do the same over the top of the first circle. Do this twice, now you have nice little dampening rings. While typing this out i began to consider the complications of unknown composition of the foam material being used in combination with a unspecified sample. I also considered how this comment is quite inarticulate and messy. Good. Moist, you should have said your mercury was slightly moist.

My dog is relieved to hear that you didn't use any KITTY LITTER, a substance beloved only by villains.

Nice observation. I've observed bubbles in mercury and I think it's because of the minute surface contamination. There's always some lipids on its surface.

Note to myself never get any Mercury compound for my home lab... All those dangers that have to be care it's too much for a lazy ass as me, btw I love your videos and also I wanted to ask you what do you do with the Mercury wastes (even the water disposed that contained Mercury)? Wouldn't the water pulling out the impurities be a pro to storing it with the mercury? Murky water on top would suggest that the impurities have somewhere to go, and that they're no longer contaminating the mercury. Right?

May I suggest storing your mercury with radon gas? I know this is a bit late, but to prevent rust and such it might be a good idea!

How do you dispose of your hazardous waste? There are usually places to take stuff like used motor oil and paint, but I doubt they'd be willing to take a bunch of mercury contaminated water.

Hi NileRed! I love your videos, they are very professional when compared to other "chem labs" videos from other youtube channels. The way you show it and tips are very detailed. My suggestion is to try something in organic chemistry, like a friedel crafts synthesis. Why dont you use the benzene extracted previously and add an ethyl group using friedel fracts just to show the reaction? Thanks mate!!

I find it hard to believe that the water or paper towel would be that "contaminated" mercury is not a wetting agent and due to its density and nature to clump together I would be skeptical of the amount of contamination that occurred. Would think it very interesting to know the amount of contamination found in that water or towel if you sent it off to a lab to be assayed...my guess would be you recovered 99.99% of your mercury.

Would you date or label this mercury for long term storage?

That 'plastic' container kinda looks like polycarbonate. I suspect that the glass bottle may have more impact resistance.

Unrelated but, how much mineral oil would I need to store 84 grams of sodium?

I have about 6kg of mercury that was given to me years ago by a company that serviced sphygmomanometers. It was contaminated with glass and oil, and I cleaned it up for my uses. I store the mercury in a reagent jar with a greased ground glass stopper. No water is held over the mercury. This bottle is in turn stored inside a 5 gallon pail, with foam holding the glass bottle securely within the secondary container. The pail has a tight fitting lid and is marked with a poison warning along with a description of the contents. Since I live in an earthquake zone, I store this pail in the most secure part of my house, which just happens to be the furnace room. In the winter, the room gets to maybe 30C, so it isn't that hot. The vapor is contained by my double storage system anyhow, and the mercury is very infrequently accessed. Other than storing this mercury in a bank vault, I think I've done everything I can to ensure that it never contaminates the environment.

Buy a lead furnace with a bottom drain from your local gun store. Heat to melting temp, and flux with wax and/or sawdust. Scrape the dross off of the top, then drain off the resulting lead. Repeat until you get bored. This won't get super-pure lead, but should dross out most of the alloys.

TRIED that. The alloy of this batch of lead wheel weights increased the melt temp so much that it melts at nearly the same temp , but do do your response I will certainly try it it again . Thank you much for your response

It does oxidize in air over time. You'll find a dark grey solid on top called 'dross'. I don't know what it would do at elevated temperatures tho... I think it'd react like most other metals.

My mercury would make you cringe. Got it out of some old German collection (pretty sure it's from or collected by someone from German because that's the language the little paper labels translate from using google). It's basically just a thing glass vile that someone sealed at the end with heat and a twist. Actually a lot of this collection probably isn't stored very well. The calcium is the one that makes me nervous. There ain't a lot of that fluid (not sure exactly what it's suspended in) in there and it tinks pretty hard against the inside of a very thing vile.

Why exactly are Mercury fumes so toxic if the elemental form isn't all that toxic aren't they just micro droplets. Do they deposit in your lungs or are more easily made into salts?

If mercury get in your blood stream it likes to make itself into organic methylmercury which is a neurotoxin.but you have to either let it seep into your skin or breath the vapors meaning you can drink it without any problems except mercury isn't really cheap
