As a recipient of a baby quilt, way back when I was a young, scared single mother, I just want to say how meaningful it was and is for me. That baby is now grown up but that quilt is in the box of keepsakes, to be passed down to any future grandkids. I have just started making my own quilts, and I hope to pay it forward someday.

That’s awesome to hear! Whenever I think of recipients of donation quilts, I sometimes think “maybe they won’t care about them, and they’ll just end up being used for a dog bed”. But I have a feeling the majority of recipients see them as the “someone cares about me” gift that they are, which is the motivation for me.

Well, I accomplished A LOT and I had to laugh as I found piece after piece after piece of batik BESIDES the batik drawer! What a great and somewhat hilarious decluttering story. About 6 years ago, I finally decided who I wanted to make a batik quilt for. I loaded up my batik collection, went to my LQS where my quilt group met for sew days, pulled out all of my batiks to sort. I asked the gals if I have enough for a quilt, and they laughed and laughed (more like 5 quilts they said.) I ended up making 6 quilts and still have some scraps. 2022 is the year I am making scrap quilts. I have 3 QOV in progress, plus several more in other fabrics for community service and gift quilts. I love scraps, but even I'm ready to say, "my scrap bin runneth over". Your quilts are bright, cheerful, and quick - I will plan to do the same. Your videos are always so helpful with humor thrown in as a bonus. thank you

The next month members brought quilts in, and I sent 28 to Utah for the victims of Ukraine. It makes your heart happy when you do something for someone else. My hope is we bring a little love for the children of Ukraine. Beth Mulkey

I so relate to this! Charity quilts are such an important part of quilting tradition. Even though you keep going back to the toss out bag for fabric that does not inspire you, you end up using your awesome skills to knock out quilts that will brighten someone’s life. I used to buy yardage of good fabric, on sale. My charity quilt backs are awesome for the fabric I retrieved. We call this upcycling today. Embrace it!

I have learned over my decades of quilting that if I put an unfinished quilt away for any reason, I must leave notes with it as to the date, what pattern, the recipient, my ideas for borders, backing, etc. Time flies by and sometimes years have passed since I stowed a project! Having these notes helps re-inspire me for the project because I don’t have to re-invent this wheel. I just finished a UFO Sandstone pattern of reds and blue Asian fabric. I’m so proud of myself. 😉

This was very interesting and made me chuckle so many times, since I can remember this exact thought process with myself and my scraps and left over fabrics from some projects! I really need to do some list-making and get busy moving some of my older fabric along, either into projects such as your baby quilts, or actual projects that mean something to me. I made a string quilt in 2020 using fabric I had collected from friends' mothers' estates and similar - very dated fabric, but very suited to string quilts. I made one in particular that was in honor of my husband's grandmother, who had made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime, all hand sewn and hand quilted, and one of the ones she made was a string quilt. So that was my main accomplishment with that inherited fabric. I want to make one more similar quilt with it, and then it should go to someone else. Maybe if I set a deadline ... Thanks for this and all of your interesting videos, Karen.

I was going to pass on some 2.5 squares (lots of them) and then I pulled all the solids and did a puzzle quilt. Then I thought...go on and get that Irish chain out of there. And there is yet another quilt begging to come out of that squares stash, and making baby quilts never crossed my mind, until now.

I didn’t love batiks at first, but now I adore them! I made a maple leaf quilt for my son with batiks and loved it so much! I wish I lived closer to you to adopt your batik scraps 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️. I love your videos and learn so much from them!

😂 this is totally something that I would have done. In fact, I am guilty of doing similar. I just can't let go of useful craft supplies even if I'm not going to love using them. But you got to practice some free motion skills, do good in the community, and make a video reassuring me that I'm not alone in my problem!

This is such a funny decluttering story! I spent an hour today decluttering 2 totes of fabric. This video was very timely in my life. Thank you! I think the baby quilts you put together are absolutely gorgeous. And although you don’t feel inspired by batiks, you were able to turn this into a blessing for others, and also practice your longarm techniques. So, your fabric isn’t inspirational for you, but your story is inspirational for me!

I LOVE batiks. Watching you sew them into quilts, made me really realize that I am most attracted to colors in a quilt. I bought a boxed set of batik fat quarters a few years ago, and made many quilts from them. I’m now down to the colors I didn’t particularly like, but found inspiration in watching this video to use them. I love the vibrant colors of batiks. Thanks for the video. I found it inspiring while I laughed through it. Although I don’t have a drawer for my scraps, I do have 3 large overflowing bags of scraps and a box of scraps I cut into 2 1/2” strips and 5” squares. I need to get cutting the scraps into useable sizes, but have been having fun making baby quilts. Love your videos!

Karen, I love your videos, because as famous as you have become, you appear to be so down to Earth. I love a fabric for whatever reason, then once I get the quilt done, I am often totally out of love with one or two of those fabric's in particular. We often keep the material, and say we'll use it, but don't. Thanks for addressing that issue, and showing us it is okay to get rid of it, costly or not. If we aren't using it, it is a money loss, anyway. I loved that you had to go back to the pile of batiks over and over. It makes me feel good, that I am not alone in that. I'll get rid of a lot of material I think I don't need, but in a few weeks, discover I did need to redo a block that had problems. It is why I left the material a week before taking it in. I am in awe that you got so many quilts done for those charities, they are probably ecstatic to have them to use. Thanks again for this decluttering challenge, it has been a topic of conversation for our quilt guild and given us all new inspiration. From Jo in SouthEast Missouri, USA.

Batiks are my absolute favorite fabrics. I am finishing up a "fractured jewels" with black sashing. Fabrics that didn't inspire me, I gave to the local quilt shop to make quilts for veterans. The 2 large trash bags were so full, we had to carry them in our arms. I cut down scraps into uniform sizes so I can get a quick quilt started.

Wow! It is surprising what/how much we can make with our "scraps". In March 2020, I started using all my scraps to make scrappy quilts. I have finished 24 quilts since then, 6 of which were scrappy. I have three more scrappy flimsies along with scrappy backs waiting to be quilted and another scrappy top being put together right now. Thankfully, family and friends are happy to have another quilt.

I am also trying to declutter and seem to continually find bags, boxes, etc blocks, strips, pieces of this and that. 😂😂they multiply in the dark while I sleep 💤. Just like the bits of thread that magically appear on your quilt even though you😊 tediously cut all the ends the day before. I love quilting!!❤❤

Great inspiration to everyone that scraps can be used for such wonderful causes. I love my batiks I bought and stored for several years, and just lately sewed many into little dresses for charity. They sew up so easily and wash like a dream. Dress a Girl is my main focus to donate to this year. I’m 70 and my real self and my fantasy self have come to terms about fabric and other craft hobbies! I have happily donated tons of craft supplies to school and 4-H. Garments are piling up for girls! So happy!
