In my last video, I noticed a lot of comments about how afraid people are of making a mistake when it comes to quilting. In the age of social media where everyone puts their best and most perfect pieces out there, you may feel pressure to only try something if it’s going to be perfect. I’ve made MANY mistakes in my Sugaridoo QAL. So come with me and see how I fixed them.

As I was making this video I found I had made yet another mistake. I thought my rows were to finish at 72"...turns out it was only 70". LOL...I'm sure that there will be a few more before I get the binding on. Please don't let mistakes stop you from getting to the finish line. Grab you coffee and enjoy...and realize we are all dealing with mistakes.

What a great and honest video. Mistakes happen. It is how you react and adapt that makes the difference. Did you let the quilt a long designer know about this video. I am sure Irena would like to see it. She would laugh. It also let's people who are just starting know that even experienced quilters are not perfect. No one is. You provided tops on how to adjust your rows which was great. Thanks for my coffee break distraction. Back to work.

Mystery pattern! That is the original cause! The quilt started with a question mark before you even chose your colors. "Many, MANY questions will be asked, can you find an answer for them all! Make the Mystery Quilt Along and find that answer, too." I think I would be asking the question, "Will cussing help?" Beautiful Quilt. Many "HAPPY ACCIDENTS."

By accident or design, each project I complete, whether quilting, knitting or crocheting, I always have a mistake. Most of the time I don’t realize it until the project is complete. It’s now a ‘game’ for the recipient to see if they can find the goof....most of the time they can’t. And it has become my ‘signature’! And that’s my story! 😉

Oh thank God you posted this video! I consider you a professional. At my ripe old age of 62, I found myself isolated and needing to make face masks for my family because of COVID-19. I had never seen before or even touched a sewing machine. So I bought a sewing machine online ( thank you Amazon) and proceeded to teach myself how to sew. It wasn’t pretty. I now have a stash of badly crafted face masks sitting in the corner. Every time I look at them I am reminded that I don’t know what I am doing. But then I found you on KZread and watched several of your videos and my hope was restored. Then this video posted today and I am so HAPPY now! Your video proved I am not a total idiot. Thank you!

This is my favorite video. We all make misteaks, I mean mistakes. I tell my students ,"Any mistake you can make, I have already made and in a more spectacular fashion." Also, "I make the mistakes so you don't have to," but where's the fun in that, really? And my favorite, "Mistakes are just new design opportunities." As for sewing the wrong sides together, it is important to remember that one has paid for both sides of the fabric, so feel free to use either in your project.

I recently lost my quilter sister-in-law and soul mate stitcher. I found several unfinished quilts in her sewing room...all with what she must have thought were irreparable mistakes. She was a rule, and instruction, follower. I fly by the seat of my pajama bottoms!! I really enjoyed the challenge of "making it work"! I was able to finish 3 projects so far, definately not as she had intended them to be, but I'm sure those to whom they were gifted will never know. In fact, I'm really feeling the joy of mistakes!

In the past, boys were never taught to sew. This means that I learn through reading and watching KZread with an occasional real lesson here and there. For me it is always comforting to see and hear that even experienced sewers make mistakes or when I see that other people's seams or points don't always match either. Your video is therefore wonderful too, as you also show that instant perfection doesn't always happen and that you can solve things in your own way. Thank you!

It has made me inventive, creative and sometimes an inventor of a new pattern entirely! I sometimes work with a lot of unfinished blocks or tops so I also work with others that have made mistakes or taken liberty with their fabric and the fredom to work around them has become a real skill set! Oh Karen, we love you!!!!! I just imagined if I had a video documentation of all my mistakes from one quilt. 😂😂😂 I've been sewing since I was nine. I was a Master Clothing Educator for several years. I helped countless boys and girls in their sewing journey. When they messed up they learned how to use the ripper; when I made a mistake in overseeing them I ripped out the mistake. My quilting sisters are so acquainted with their rippers that they just call them "Jack". "Somebody hand me Jack, please," is commonly heard around sew-ins and retreats, but we are still the ones that are embarrassed and think we are the only ones that make mistakes. In a world where we start to believe that the perfect machine, the perfect thread, and the perfect manicure are all necessities for quilting, thanks for always bringing in the perfect dose of reality!

I have realized that I needed to let go of the guilt I felt for some of my early quilts. I learned on my own so there are mistakes. I was not good at cutting and not good with keeping the seams at a quarter of an inch. My first 2 quilts are falling apart at the seams in many places and one was for my mother. I had to let go and say that it was one of my first and I was learning. I finally made her a new one so she doesn't use the other one on her bed. She used it almost every week on her bed, holes and all

HAHAHAH!! I LOVED this vlog post! First, let me ask, “do cuss words ever sneak out when you realize you’ve seen the same mistake twice-and have to rip it out for a third try?” (I love Jesus, but yes, I do cuss a little!) 😆 Second, sharing your mistakes on just this ONE quilt top is evidence to ALL seamstresses and quilters that “it happens to everyone”. Sharing our faults and hardships cements the validity of the adage; Misery loves company. ☺️. Just sharing all that is imperfect with another human being gives relief to what can sometimes defeat us, or maybe just weigh us down. Quilting is an art, therefore imperfect, and the beauty of it truly is in the eye of the beholder. Historically?, the greater beauty for me comes from knowing the back story, which isn’t always a pretty story, but usually more entertaining than simply seeing a finished piece of artwork. ❤️. God bless you and your wonderful mistakes. Praying for your son’s continued health. ❤️❤️

Like you, one of the multiple times I made mistakes in a quilt's construction, I didn't notice until after it was finished and hanging on my bedroom wall for a couple of months. It's a glaring error only I notice and I don't point it out to anyone. I know it's there and it bugs me a little since I struggled with that part of the quilt and was so proud of myself when I had finally gotten it right (or so I thought). In the end whenever I look at the mistake, or any other errors I catch in my quilts, I remind myself I'm human and only God is perfect. Then I either fix the mistake if possible, or move on since there are so many more important things in life to worry about. I just get it done!😊👍

Oh, Karen, you don't know how much I needed this video! With every block, I am thinking, can I make it through this one block without a mistake? Can I have no cutting errors this time around? Do I really need to appliqué a correction over that spot? Ripping out stitches again??? Are you kidding??? I just sewed that one piece together again the wrong way for the third time!!! It's so good to be able to laugh at one's self when these things happen. Yes, we don't want to waste time, yes, we are on a schedule, yes, we don't want to spend time and effort on figuring out a fix, but we do it anyway. We love our craft too much to let these obstacles stand in our way. We should keep track of our wrong turns and feel blessed that we overcame it all and finished a quilt that we love (and wanted to make.) Sometimes the mistakes end up being really cool! Thanks for baring your soul!!!

I had to redraft all the paper piecing rows in the Sugaridoo QAL because none of them printed quite the right size (even though I printed it 100%). They were all about 5% too small, so I drew them by hand before cutting my fabric. Since I quite enjoy drafting patterns, it actually enhanced the quilt experience for me.

I sure it was you who once said, "done is better than perfect!" LOL! I once had to piece a border on a table runner...love that scrappy look! I have made three sets of placements from a Jordan Fabrics table runner kit where the supplied backing fabric is used as the border. Cut it wrong 2 out of the three times! First time, I fixed it from the extra yard of fabric required for the new backing. Second time (on the third attempt) I caught myself before cutting it all wrong and was able to piece that border, too. Good thing I had that previous experience with piecing a border! Due to good luck (or divine intervention?) it is not noticable due to the way the print lined up! I participated in a mystery sew a long...never again, for lots of reasons! I was so focused on making sure a directional print was facing the right way, I sewed the block to the right instead of the left side of the quilt. My philosophy is that very few people know what the quilt is "supposed" to look like so they won't even notice! I am having so much fun doing these projects, that, like you say, the mistakes are just part of the journey/experience. Love your channel; keep up the great work of encouragement and inspiration!

Perfect timing! I'm working on a churn dash quilt, and once I finished all the blocks, I saw that one was so small it was like I made it on a different machine. Another one had pieces turned the wrong way. I was so frustrated I walked out of my sewing room and turned off the light. I went back in this morning, took a deep breath, completely took those blocks apart and re-sewed them, and I'm just finishing putting the quilt together. You helped take my stress away!

I recall a charity quilt I put together for my guild, made from blocks by the members. Only one of them was the 'perfect' size, so all the rest, including my own, were either a bit big or a little small. I solved the problem by framing all of the blocks, then trimming them to a consistent size. And the finished product looked great!

This is an encouraging video, Karen! I have some perfectionist tendencies (not as many now, though, after raising six children, lol). I can be hard on myself when I make mistakes, but I've come to the conclusion that it's more about the process than the product--with everything! Quilting, knitting, crocheting . . . LIFE! To really enjoy what I'm doing, instead of stressing out about everything being perfect or even about having to do something over again. If I'm enjoying the process, even ripping out and doing over is ok. Because it's all in the "process". Then when I persevere through all the "process", the "product" is even more meaningful. Thanks for your transparency. Love you!

I so appreciate your honesty and good attitude that you share. I am still a new quilter. Before covid struck I told a friend I would help her make her first quilt. She was an accomplished garment seamstress. She bought the fabric and then the first stay at home order began. What to do? We worked together over zoom. The first thing I told her is she can expect to make mistakes along the way and not to expect her first quilt to be perfect. She was SHOCKED that I would say such a thing! She laughs now, but is starting her 5th quilt, all during the pandemic. She is hooked and loves it. I've had people tell me I must be patient to quilt. I don't think of it that way...I just do what it takes to finish the quilt. And as many do, I love the process. I fall in love with each quilt as it progresses in spite of the mistakes. As you say...we just get it done. Thank you Karen for all of your help in our quilting journey.

What a fun pattern. When all was sewed and done, it looks great! My sister is a quilter, also. She is a perfectionist. She has told me more times then I can count "I have FINALLY learned how to make a perfect 1/4" seam". She never gives up. She worries constantly about how the quilt is coming together. I told her that quilting is for fun. You are supposed to be having a good time. It doesn't matter if there is a mistake unless you are putting that quilt in a show. I have made some major mistakes that I , quite frankly, had to hide in the finished quilt. In the end, they are my quilts and I love them.

Wow! I posted this on the wall in my sewing room, "In order to do something well, we must first be willing to do it badly." -Julia Cameron. Mistakes are learning experiences and trying to understand the reasons behind making the mistake helps to avoid making the same mistake a second time if only we take a little time to figure it out. I've been in too much of a hurry, failed to plan properly, took on a project way above my skill level, didn't pay enough attention to the directions, etc. Mistakes really can be learning experiences if we stop and analyze them. Mistakes have taught me what patterns/ techniques I want to avoid and how to improve my results next time, etc.. They've also knocked me down a peg when I've been overconfident and took bad shortcuts.

So this time around I planned on using my walking foot and machine quilting. I practiced and practiced but I was so afraid to mess up, (it was a gift), that I couldn't get started. This fear gripped me for so long I could have hand quilted it. I finally got it conquered. Made a lot of mistakes but now my fear is gone and I ready for the next. Angela Waters says, “I’m not a great quilter, I’m just better at hiding the mistakes.” I’m working on a Christmas quilt with off white background fabric which I couldn’t find so I had to cut sashing from white fabric which throws the color pattern off but I said I don’t care and am sewing it together anyway. Of course after completing the sashing, I found the off-white background fabric. Oh well, I’m not ripping it out.
