DeClutter Hoarded Basement | How to Overcome Decluttering Anxiety

Before I started my recovery journey, I was paralyzed in anxiety to start decluttering. My nervous system sounded all the alarms that prevented me from starting! But I had to overcome that anxiety so I could start! Here is what helped me overcome that fear of Decluttering!

The decluttering is moving along. Pretty soon you’ll be able to design some enjoyable space in the basement for you. Your hubby has his workout 🏋️‍♀️ area. Your boys have their play area. So eventually you should have a crafting and designing area. And maybe a cat tower for Pepper to play. Hehe!

Maybe it helps going through some boxes with stuffs thats make you happy. Not to declutter, but to get the the feeling of feeling safe. As reminder that only the unnecessary stuff is going. Thats whats helped me in the past.

I've been meaning to thank you for helping me. My social anxiety has been so bad for so many years that I have had almost no presence on the internet until I started commenting on your videos slowly over the years. Watching you heal and the likes I get from everyone for some of my ideas has inspired me to start my own channel soon. Just that confidence boost has been enough to make me want to share more of what i know and hopefully help someone who could use it.

For me anxiety in finishing comes from fear that I won't actually be as happy with the results as I think I will be, fear that after all that I'll feel empty. I think that's why joy in the journey is so important!

Encouraging the viewers to just feel the anxiety and talk to themselves about how they are safe is great advice! Many try to give the advice to make anxiety go away, but I keep hearing from physiologists that it's better to learn to tolerate the anxious feelings rather than try to eliminate or avoid anxiety. ❤

Wow this came at the perfect time for me as I just came upstairs from working on my declutter and like you I’m starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel but oddly have anxiety about it. It’s almost like an excuse for me not to socialize because I feel like I constantly have projects going and when I finish my years of decluttering, I won’t have that excuse. 😂 Thank you for your inspirational videos!

I have literally watched all your videos from the beginning since Dawn the Minimal Mom mentioned you one day. Thank you for always being motivation to help me continue on my journey. I have noticed sooooo many similarites in our thought processes. I have been slowly decluttering and organizing for years (I can't quite pinpoint the start) but something I've noticed that doesn't seem to bother you, is the actual giving of things. You have said that it makes you feel good to know someone else is getting use out of it. Unfortunately, for me that is one of the hardest parts. When I take my things to the donation centers I often feel my anxiety and panic rising the closer I get to the location. It's the reason my donations piles slowly build and just stick around for way too long. I don't let it hold me back and I have to talk myself through it and know that someone will get use of my things. I just wanted to share that struggle in case anyone else out there feels the same. Thanks for all your inspiring videos!!!

That way all we will see is a person on screen? Or what if you set up the camera and he is behind and you hold up the items and he tells you what stays and what goes? Please let him know we have no judgement we just like seeing the declutter. 💗💗💗💗 you are doing such a good job

Ms Heart I love that you explained you still feel exposed and have some anxiety now you are getting to near to the end of clearing out the hoard. It normalises this for others and lets people know this is OK to still feel that way. Perhaps if you take a quick peek in all the boxes you are keeping it will reinforce how far you have come in your journey and how many items you still have. That may reinforce the idea that it is only things you no longer love or cherish that you are decluttering and that all the items which make you feel safe are still safely contained and stored in the basement.

What's it feel like to have to totally swap out clothes? I live in Louisiana, so I don't have to do that. I mean, it gets cool, sometimes cold, but for the most part, I stay in tshirts. I do have some fleece lined leggings and long sleeve shirts, but I don't have to do a regular complete swap. I think it would stress me out. And one day, me and hubby want to move up north...

As a visual organizer, Miss Butterfly, I wonder if you are able to display the items that you kept in a very visual and beautiful way if that would fill that empty space and give you that comforting cocoon that you are missing? I only mention it because I am very much that way in my home. I used to have a need for so much more stuff, but now I fill some of the space with a very brightly colored wall and art and all of my items display really loudly on shelves. Like all of your shelves that you decorate in the upstairs and your bedside table. Could you even do this with the basement? Have your favorite color accent wall with your items displayed prominently on shelves? I have no idea if this will bring you the same Comfort that it brings me. I can’t do called empty space, but I feel really energized and comforted by my objects when they are displayed where I can see them, with colorful and playful wall colors behind. It might be too much for some people, but for me it is soothing, like being surrounded by good memories and great friends. I do still deal with a lot of anxiety in general and the things you said this video were very helpful. Look at whether I’m actually in danger and when I realize I’m not trying to identify what happened in the past to make me feel so anxious in the situation. And to try to heal it. I really love how we help each other on this channel.
