HUGE Basement DeClutter | How to overcome Decision Making Paralysis

On this episode we’re going to be talking about how to overcome Decision Making Paralysis. DMP is when you’re so fearful of making the wrong decision, that you make no decision at all. And I was stuck in that endless cycle as a Level 4 Hoarder. To finally break that cycle, I had to go through these three steps:
1). Self Awareness, I’m a human with emotional responses to events.
2). I can control the thoughts that follow an emotional response.
3). By controlling those thoughts, I prevented my emotions from highjacking my behaviors.

I've been working on downsizing two storage spaces since April (four years after a major move) and your videos have helped me a great deal. I don't identify as a hoarder, but I do have my mother's Depression-era 'hold onto it" gene and you are the only person who does a deep dive into the emotional content of clutter and how to move through it. So glad to see that you've made so much progress over time. Thank you so much for the inspirational work that you do.

I can't wait until you have your craft area set up. When you comedown the stairs, your Christmas cave is to the right. Right? Ok. Stand right at the Christmas cave and look directly in front of you (into the basement, not the cave). Directly in front is where Hubby's weight/exercise area should go. Past that, and to the back wall is where I want to put your craft area. That desk would be perfect to use there! I'd think you can use the changing table to hold supplies! The boys play area stays where it is, and maybe expand that area to hook up the TV to a gaming system, and if it's not a tossy-tossy you can use the recliner to sit on in front of the TV/for gaming. That leaves you with the last area to actually have as your long term storage!

I agree! Miss heart keeps shoving it around the whole basement to avoid to make a decision on it, by now I really have to laugh everytime a glimpse of it appears in her video.. and it does almost everytime 😂 I think it will be very freeing for her to finally make a decision and repurpose it. And the partitions of the basement are absolutely logical and just the way I would divide the room 🙂

That was a lot of stuff! I tried to have a yard sale I earned so little that it wasn't worth it. I am slowly decluttering and donating the stuff. Perhaps when I get all the stuff out of my spare room and the shed, it will go better. There is so much.

Some people like Ms Heart get other benefits from yard sales, they like seeing their stuff going to people who want it, it's a social/community thing for them, it's a teachable moment for children. For those reasons it's worth the time and effort to those people. I normally use my local facebook buy nothing group to pass things on or donate them to charity.

Could you do a panoramic view of what is left in the whole basement. I have been following you since the beginning. I guess I can't wait for you get to the zoning (craft area/memorabilia-move shelf from laundry room, party supplies/gift wrap center-use baby changing table for wrapping table with a small store for back to school and gift shopping. Baby toys-could go in areas that are not has easy to access (perhaps the attic/seasonal items could come down and placed near Christmas cave since you use them yearly) and redefining so you can begin to use the things you have decided to keep. Then things would have a permanent home making them easier to put away verses putting in a giant pile. You could put up a sign for each area or mark out the areas with masking tape against the wall any thing that does not fit your chosen categories could be put in an area to declutter and sort after the "big" zoning is complete. Since most boxes are labeled the whole family could help you.

I would love an episode where she draws the basement out onto a big piece of paper and then maps out what she wants in each area. As you say the family could then help move everything. I think her husband needs a section with his gym equipment and all of his sentimental stuff, which he might then declutter if he saw how much it all was. Then Ms Heart deserves a lovely crafting area by the Christmas cave. I would love for her to be able to fit all seasonal decor in that cave!

But i can't let it go. so funny. the value is in the usage an. it it hardly fine crystal.

I so remember the churned items, your purple case first in the laundry room, from your teenage, college years, you did let the old fingernail polish go. I am sure you put it with the sentimental. The chair cushion from your first apartment (?) glad you could let it go. Happy you found a microphone (goes in your you tube box in the living room). No way you could have let go of that much stuff in the beginning because you could not have gotten through that much stuff, You are such an inspiration!!!! I can't help but notice the baby changing table. It's too painful for words when the child we wanted isn't here. Perhaps consider repurposing it for Miss Pepper. Perhaps she could have a stool or something so she could get to the top and hang out in a bed with cat toys on the other shelves? Just a thought. Cat treats on another shelf contained in some of the storage containers you found today? So glad Hubby removed the insulation. I thought it might be your first "tossy tossy". Miss Pepper really likes the fireplace. Thank you for sharing your journey!

Remember those walls in your hall you showed us for your first whole house tour? Consider a collection of framed pictures of past pets. Especially if you can find one in your Father's chair. Also, they make plate hangers so you can display your Mother's China, vertically on those walls, if you want, just some thoughts. So happy you are the place to let go of the Star Wars basketball hoop. Perhaps a much younger child, from your boys current age, will enjoy it. Plastic bags for your yard sales...Brilliant idea!!!!

We know that Mel is not polluting the oceans. All her bags are in the basement. 🤭 (Poking gently after I came across my bag of bags and made the same joke)

I don't usually recommend that people keep things they've decided to discard, but if I were you, I would keep the wooden coat hangers for hanging winter coats. 🙂

The China should be stored upstairs so you can use for your holidays and company. It will get damaged in a paper box. Great work
