Decision 2020: New SPIKE Brewing Conical fermenter - CF5 CF10 CF15 | RGR Craft podcast | Home Brew

Спорт

Spike brewing conical fermenter vs SS Brewtech is the question for Decision 2020. I have added the CF5 conical fermenter for the channel this year. We will be doing reviews, how-tos and gotchas to home brew on the Spike stainless steel conical fermenter.
Ep 1 - how to decide on a stainless conical and is Spike's the right choice?

The Spike vs SS choice wasn't terribly clear to me. The things you listed are available in the SS as well, unless I'm confused. I'm not an SS apologist (I'm from WI and I hate CA, so there are two reasons for me to go with Spike), but I'd like to see any differences in capability and limitations.

Great job! I just bought a CF5 and setup it up. I got it with the manifold as well and cooling coil. I am very excited about the next posts to really see how to maximize my investment. I brew Kolsch 6 times a year and 6 other brews that interest me. Cleaning it was a breeze. I will pump directly from kettle into fermenter and use the cooling coil to cool wort to yeast temp. My kettle has the spike steam hat to keep moisture down while I brew inside. Getting everything dialed in has been a challenge dealing with losses in tubing, values, pumps etc. I am pumped to see the next posts,

@@RGRCraft The steam kid fit great on Gas-One kettle during entire brew cycle doing exactly what it was supposed to do. But during CIP it leaked like a sub with open windows. The lid has a flat lip while the kettle is rounded. So I reached out to Spike and they said I could get 15% one of their kettles. Not exactly what I wanted so I am trying a little keg lube on flat lip to see if that helps. I even tried using the spike unitank lid clamp but it was to short to go around kettle and clamp shut. Spike does not sell the clamp so I can't order one for a larger pot to try.

@@RGRCraft great suggestion it fit the steam and should be better than metal on metal. I will order one and get back to you. Thanks again!

This is my decision 2022 between a CF5 or CF10. I mostly do 5-6 gallon batches of beer but sometimes i'll do a 10-12 gallon batches. Im just concerned about the amount of headspace on a 5 gallon batch in the CF10 would negatively affect the beer. I cant seem to figure out if pressure brewing would mitigate any negative effects of large headspace or even if if the headspace issue is not to be concerned about. So many questions....

Hey Ryan, nice intro to some of the Spike product line. In short, I am planning on opening a small (nano) scale brewery as an extension of my homebrewing hobby (as if we haven't heard that story before). Anyway, I just ordered my first Spike system as well (a 5 gal. Flex). It looks like I am about 6 or 7 months behind you but I think we're pretty much on the same path? Please keep these videos coming and maybe we can collaborate in the future. Cheers!

Cheers Bob. It definitely does sound like we're walking the same path. I'm just not brave enough to open up a brewery though 😜. More power to you!! Certainly open to collaborating. Where are you opening up?
