New Record Day did a quick review of them at a show in a hotel room. He thought they were very good, but the tweeter was a bit bright and called attention to itself. Fine for home theater for sure, but not perhaps "audiophile". Now, nothing says you couldn't tame it a bit by changing the crossover a bit (maybe a different resistor on the tweeter). Who knows, KLH may tweak them in another iteration after getting feedback from users. The Kendalls certainly look good and meet a great price point. I was looking at them myself, but now, after watching many reviews (including Jay's) I'm saving up for the Model 5. I'm so glad that David Kelly bought the rights to the dead KLH brand and moved them to Indiana and is moving the performance to price ratio so well for us consumers. Much to like here. Very happy to see KLH become once again a real audiophile company. I think Henry Kloss, Malcolm S. Low, and Josef Anton Hofmann would be proud.

@@Borednlonely the sub I need for HT, these things are good to about 40. Fine for music. But I like hearing lower. Placement to the klh is about the same everywhere cause its sealed. I have them 1ft from wall, they have a lot of bass, that's the problem they overlap too much with my old sub. The old sub only can go to the mid 20s and by then they don't do much spl. To balance the bigger klhs out I need a sub that digs deeper. Old sub was better at crossing over high and is a good match for filling out for the old limited range satellites, but these could use a sub for that sub 40 range.

Great review Jay! I got a pair of these KLH Model 5's last year, and am very happy, just lovely speakers, and I love the retro look too. And eventually, I bought some No Rez speaker lining material from GR- Research and lined the speakers with that stuff and noticed an immediate improvement, just a little more cohesive, and solid, and maybe a bit smoother too. . But!... After watching Jay's review of the Tekton Pendragons, I was suddenly thinking, Holy Cow! I better try a pair of those too...that's the danger of watching these videos, the bug gets you....but realized today that a better route might be to upgrade my amp and just keep my Model 5's. I currently have the Outlaw Audio RR2160 Receiver, which I bought after listening to Steve Guttenberg review, where he cogently said "This amp has balls!!" So,now... I just watched Jay's review of the Vincent 237MKII hybrid amp, and I'm thinking that could be a wonderful pairing with the KLH Model 5's?? A real dilemma!

Back when I was in college, and working part-time at an audio repair shop (about 1972), I heard a pair of Model 5's driven by Phase Linear amp with about 200 watts per channel, playing source material (jazz) from a Revox reel-to-reel tape recorder playing at 15 ips. It was amazing. I was able to buy a pair at 50% off list price directly from KLH because I was an employee of an authorized repair shop. It was an very good speaker for the time, but obviously the new one is much better. Even now, I still prefer acoustic suspension speakers, even though there are not many around these days (except for some subwoofers).

When "bass reflex" made a comeback an audio engineer told me "you'll save money both on speaker and amplification, they are more efficient". With the tiny enclosures now being built the push to make the new ported boxes put out some real bass is making the 60's and 70's sealed boxes look downright efficient. And people are now demanding 100-200 W speakers because of this. 100 wpc rms in 1970 was *a lot", and drove the supposedly inefficient acoustic suspension boxes marvelously.

Great honest review. I had the same type of “issue” when I was looking at buying Wilson audio Sabrina/Focal Sopra 2 speakers recently. The Revel 228be just as good and arguably better (flatter wider dispersion, plays louder, way louder!) and 1/2 the price… I ended up with the less “fancy” revels. I should note that I use duel subs in ALL systems crossed at 60hz currently. The Sonus Faber Olympica Nova III was the 3rd place runner up. I still want a pair of Yvettes lol, maybe one day.

I really like your new style, Jay. You are on hyperdrive in your audio jurney. Everything you review affects you deeply and it's a total blast...for a few weeks. Keep up your "dialed to 11" enthusiasm. ;-) I developed my taste for sound with KLH and AR "sealed boxes" and they were fantastic. I will certainly consider the Fives. 10 inch woofer (and box volume) should compensate for lack of port regarding bass. But lazy bass? Hmm. Surprised that soundstage should be in the range of the "wiiiide" KEF R3, LS50, Elac DBR62... Really now, seriously? A possible alternative would be Dali Rubicon 2. But KLH appeals to my nostalgia. And "at the end of the day it's the SOUND that counts" So very true.

Dude...best intro to a review in a long time...had to pause it for a laugh!! Look Jay, I can completely understand how you feel about this speaker...it’s fantastic and I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t stands as they are specifically designed for them. But look....I’ve heard the Model 5’s, and OWN the Kendall Towers. And I can sincerely tell you that the same characteristics are in them as well. Shit flys around the room when listening to one of my reference CD’s “Behind the Gardens, Behind the Wall-Under the Tree”, by Andreas Vollenwieder. Now just like your boy told you....”Dude get these fucking speakers and do a review!” I’m not going to get into specs, but KLH hit two home runs, and as much as you think the Model5’s are underrated, shit no one has done a real video review of the Kendall’s! But those who have that have written about them are blown away! And they are only 1299.00 a pair! There was one guy who did an unboxing and said, good luck getting a pair! Dude...you will be equally as wowed. And they too sound better with light tilting up, toed in. Great fucking review man!!

I think Sean once stated that these KLHs have a bit of that Harbeth sound ... well, a bit of that would suit me just fine. I think that the Schiit Ragnarok 2 just might be the amp for these speakers but I would not be afraid to try the SMSL VMV A1 (class A) just to see/hear what these speakers could do at moderate to low volume. This was your most enthusiastic review "ever" and I really think KLH owes you (and others) big time. I am now, very seriously, considering these speakers and yup, sound aside, I love the vintage look. Thank you Jay🤙🇨🇦🤙 (& KLH)

This speaker reminds me of the Ac suspension Cizek 1 from the late 70’s. It was set up the same way on short Polk 10 stands that angled up. You could change the Q from .6 which sounded best or 1. The front baffle was covered with foam to reduce diffraction. I would try bituminous felt on these. Its main weakness was its midrange crossing a 1” peerless dome tweeter to the 10” woofer at 1500hz but it had great fast sounding bass and clear highs. Roy Cizek was a legendary designer, look him up. Great enthusiastic review, very entertaining.

I am not surprised by your reaction to the KLH 5 because the original "5" was introduced by Henry Kloss and KLH in 1968. Henry Kloss and Edgar Villchur founded Acoustic Research (AR) in 1954 and developed the sealed cabinet. Their initial product was the revolutionary acoustic suspension AR-1 loudspeaker but Henry Kloss later left AR and started KLH. Years later, AR produced the AR-3a that became a recognized standard for home quality sound for many years. The last incarnation of the AR-3a is the AR 303, made in 1995. I currently own a set. After 23 years of ownership, the AR 303s continue to amaze me in how they can rock. If I were to replace them, the KLH 5 might do it. The AR 303 goes down to 32Hz (+/-3dB) while the "5" goes down to 42Hz (+/-3dB).

Got the speakers... Walnut with the white linen grills, they are gorgeous. I listened to Jay, after purchasing the Denafrips Ares II, a real game changer vs a chip DAC, I went and pulled the trigger on the Denafrips Iris DDC, Hades preamp and Thallo amplifier... Also picked up the new BS Node to feed the tunes... Audio Nirvana, this setup took me directly to the place I wanted to be in regards to sound, the 1970's. The only upgrade, and I am debating even that, is to move up to the Pontus II. With the Iris DDC and the Ares II, dropping another grand, point of diminishing returns? That is where I am at. Other than that, I cannot see doing much of anything to this system, other than adding a turn table... I already have the Oppo for SACD and BD, I really cannot see going back to another vinyl rig.

I would like to also see you do a review of the Magnat Transpuls 1500's. I see a lot of bashing and typical nasty comments from people that care about nothing more than measurements on the internet.. Of coarse these speakers are not perfect in any way, but however, they do sound amazingly good. They're slightly larger than the Klipsch Forte so they do offer a big sound. Tight bass, full mids and extended highs that are quite smooth. I'm powering mine with a Willsenton R8 which you're very familiar with. All in all, they're a pretty damn good speaker that deserves some props..

Interesting. I was in HiFi in the '70's and sold those. Along with Warfedales and Rectilinears. Also ported speakers like JBLs and Cerwin Vegas. It was understood at that time that a sealed box has a lower response than a ported box. Ports are known as "tuned: for a reason. They increase efficiency at the sacrifice of low end extension. But most people like the as you say the Fun Zone sound. And ports add that. Plus take less power. I was probably more surprised at your surprise than you were surprised that a seal box had better response.

A sealed speaker most often also has lower distortion than a relatively uncontrolled woofer and “artificial” bass from a port, which is also uncontrolled and often out of phase with the actual woofer output.

Totally agree. And the bass reflex "efficiency" is being squandered in the tendency to smaller and smaller cabinets that are less and less efficient. Builders turn that handicap into an asset by calling them "lifestyle" speakers. Meanwhile bass reflex speakers are harder to tune right and have uneven responses and impedance that often give amps a very hard time.

Rectilinear speakers were awesome in their day. What was the model # with 4 cone tweeters, a 5” midrange and a 12” woofer in a floorstanding enclosure? I remember one reviewer at that time referring to the Rectilinear as having electrostatic clarity 😆.

if your not into the "vintage" look then you likely will dismiss Harbeth as well or Rogers. Agreeably the sound from the KLH is awesome. In the late 50's Edgar Villchur formed a company AR , he created a special woofer the was very compliant, unlike stiffer designs , and it depended on the air trapped in 1.5 cubic foot speaker cabinet to give it rigidity , thereby he was able to create a speaker capable of reproducing true bass in the low 30 hz range in a cabinet only 1.5 cubic feet. whereas the equivalent sound from a bass reflex type cabinet , would be monstrous in size about 8 times larger. The new acoustic suspension design was all the rage , but it needed power and lots of it , people being people ie; thrifty, eventually forced speaker manufactures to make more efficient designs , hence ported. Now it's interesting the New KLH has followed through with the air suspension design , while not as common they are being made ie; Magico The air suspension will give you deeper truer bass , a fast bass. It is note worthy having owned the original model 5 from KLH they had a 12"woofer , but back then we knew so little. it's a pity they were not able to install a 11 inch or even 12 inch in the new one . reasoning must be they were satisfied with the bass performance. The new KLH model 5 in Walnut is stunning especially with the stone wash grille , like most reviewers say this is so much fun, they want to listen to their whole collection again like it's for the first time....

These are arguably better than Harbeth, or at least more versatile. Regarding the slightly "vintage" look, who really cares? It's the sound that counts. And the stand solution is far less clumsy than most standmounts. I hope it does not become a speaker for nostalgic boomers. ASR has to test it and give its stamp of approval. I'm a bit surprised by the distance between the drivers. They used to be that way and were pushed closer together for very valid reasons. (time alignement, etc)

Has anyone (maybe you Jay since you reviewed both speakers) got some comparison notes of the KLH Model five and the Elac Vela FS407 or FS408? I'm just curious since KLH speakers are hard to find in my area and I would normally go to one of my local dealers to compare speakers that get reviewed somewhere to hear for myself what the speakers are all about and put the review in perspective... A great review as always Jay btw! Keep it going :)

I can’t speak to the Velas, but the Elac ARB51 powered speakers are fantastic and, with a Benchmark dac and two Rel t5i subs, completely fill my medium sized room with the sweetest, deepest, 3d soundstage envelope you can imagine. (if properly placed in an acoustically corrected room, of course) That combo competes very well with my full-size Spendor stand mounts, SP2/3r2

I've paired my new walnut pair of model 5s with IOTAVX stack, Denafrips Ares 2. Absolutely blown by what these boxes do, and they are not fully broken in. tonality, soundstage, immersiveness..all the pretty words reviewers use day in and out. I get that with these. And I think IOTAVX stack is a compromise . If I upgrade the amp to a better one, that's it done. Endgame.
