Is it really upbeat and Happy or is it more of a song that laments the end of something enjoyable. Both Light and L loved the Play and challenge but light won and suddenly he realizes no one will ever match him again. And he is sad rather than feeling triumphant because he himself wishes for a minute more.

It really is the first time, after L has realized he's no longer going to be alive to play, that he interacts with Light as more than an opponent in his game, but a menace who is truly evil. No coincidence it comes right after L reveals his trump card: he knew Light was Kira since the very beginning, and Light simply responds by saying he let him play his part. It shows that even with the most ingenius of L's 4d chess, he "didn't see this coming." Light is able to kill him and get away with it anyways.

Yeah! I love how there's a kind of meta style to L's lyrics, like he always references being in a play just the same way Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool references his cinematic universe. It feels like it was a lead to exactly this moment, like he knew this would be his last case.

"As if I am acting in a play So out of character, yet somehow not a shock" I like to think these two lines are not only L saying he feels as if he's being manipulated all the way leading up to his death - but also a nod to the fact that this is a play, a musical, and, above all things, an adaptation. That he is not the same as the L from the manga, or from the anime, or any of the other version - this is another L, but it's 'somehow not a shock' - he still, ultimately, is L. That disaster of a detective we all know and love. See, this is how you respect the original work when making adaptations. Netflix, take notes.

Light sounds so aggressively triumphant in this song, but at the very end, his tone softens and becomes solemn and morose. When he sings "when you wish you had a minute more / a minute more”, he's obviously counting down the seconds until L passes, but it kinda sounds like he's secretly bartering for "a minute more"/more time to spend with L, his only equivalent. You can hear the exact moment his tone changes from "CHECKMATE, L!" to "Oh shit, this really is the end". The playwright said that this musical is about different types of love - romantic, familial, friendship, etc. Despite their opposition, L and Light had mutual respect for one another. They were kindred spirits. I love that Light dies shortly after L in the musical. Their chains and handcuffs kinda symbolize the red string of fate: L and Light were bound together by fate, and the fall of one inevitably leads to the downfall of the other. Ryuk kills Light because without L (the only person worthy of being his opponent), the game is over. He essentially has nothing to live for. anyways im gay and sad

“See it flicker, hear it humming.” vs “See it blazing, hear it drumming.” This kills me, L’s life is flickering away and growing fainter, his death inevitable, while Light, soon to be free of the only one threatening him and his success, feels his life growing ever stronger. (Of course, Ryuk does kill Light soon after, but it wouldn’t seem that way to Light yet.) Anyway, that’s my interpretation at least.

I get more of a general, “dark computer faintly being shined with a dim sunlight at a mock beach(in that it’s not really near any beach, but the atmosphere can creep up through the air outside) environment” vibe with the score and instrumentation in this, during the intro and verses(L and Light’s solo parts) in this(like your inside your house all day, even though it’s still bright outside despite it being mid afternoon, like me over here in Whittier, California), casually dipping into the pulsing yet empty darkness that you end up blinding yourself with as you try to shield your eyes from the light peering from the couch you sit in near the windows during the choruses(“Is this/this is the way it ends now-”), all the while the bridge(“I’ve seen through you right from the start-“) is reminiscent of your attempts to seclude yourself in the dark in the hopes that the computer, T.V., or whatever will suffice as you endure this feeling like you can’t simply go outside for a change for reasons maybe fixable but otherwise unexplainable to yourself alone in the moment. Something, like much of this musical’s score in general, reminiscent of the rock edges presented in the anime’s score now given the chance to expand on it’s own inner portrayals of the characters through the vocals. That’s what I think, anyway. I’d be curious to hear how you think this song gave you a love song vibe, Natalie. :)

Jeremy jordan and jarrod spector both do these characters justice. Light the way they go about the songs and play off eachother so well its like the shows light and L. Also in that last a minute more jeremy does it so perfectly with a smug but sad finish like light. Because L truly was lights best friend, light had to kill him but he did thoroughly enjoy the game. This is why i love the musical and the anime because the emotion behind that characters is so perfect theyre layered and well built not 2 dimensional.

Please tell me somebody else noticed that sad note Light sings at the end of the song, 'a minute more' He sounds so regretful and sad, almost as if he wishes he didn't have to kill L, or that he simply hadn't. Yet through the rest of the song he seems perfectly fine and happy about L dying. You could put it up that the writers simply wanted the song where L, a belovedly over rated(I still love you L) character, dies to end on a sad note, but if that were the case, why not have L sing it himself? Nope. They used Light. Light sounding sad about his nemesis' death? Hm... any thoughts? I'm open to suggestion.

  • @DraculaHyde

You are not alone. I share your belief that Light is actually a little regretful here that he has sentenced L to death. L was the ying to his yang, the only other person on the planet who could match him. And now he's lost that person because they chose to stood in his way. You could even argue that Light genuinely thought of L as a friend, in the musical atleast, because the writers actually manage to make Light more sympathetic (just a tad, mind you lol) then the manga and anime. This is shown when Light sings multiple times that killing people with the Death Note does indeed take an emotional toll on him, especially the FBI agents; but he feels he has no choice to create his New World. It's all up to interpretation. Myself has seen video of both Hong Kwang-Ho and Han Ji-Sang as Light in this scene, and both actors display some sort of remorseful emotion. Ho just stands still with a look of, "I didn't want to do that, but I had no choice." While Sang, takes it a step further by getting this look of emotional agony on his face, before covering it with his hands, like he's ready to cry, and dropping to the floor.

@@DraculaHyde Yeah. I definitely believe that's true, not even just for the musical (though it's amplified more), it has been shown that Light can feel emotion, his reaction to his sister's kidnapping and father's death in the anime show that (I don't care what anybody says, I don't believe he was acting). When L died in the anime I think Light was thankful that L wouldn't stand in his way anymore (look how long that lasted) but also remorseful because things would be 'boring'. Life's no fun without any excitement right?

This song is one of the most upbeat yet horrifying on the album; we already know scenarios can be written out in the Note for how someone dies but it tends to have a bit of leeway for interpretation, so the fact that leeway seems to be L knows he's now acting out the scenario is really sad. Light knew him well enough to have L doing everything he would normally be doing, and L just knows everything's off! Love this musical!

You know I just realized, L would've been seen as Kira in the play. Light may not get to continue being him, but noone will think it was him. Think about it this way. The cops go and find L and Light, who most of the world probably thought it was one of those two. Light fired at Ryuk so the gun is near him... L has a gunshot in his head, and Light died of a heart attack. I feel like they'd assume Light found out L was Kira, killed him, but L gave him a heart attack too. In the end maybe not a win for light... but he died with people thinking his honor was in tact, while L's name is destroyed as Kira.

I think Light is sad in a way that L died, because 1, I believe he thought of L as some kind of a friend. and 2, Light enjoyed having a rival, a nemesis, someone who matched his intelligence. Because L and Light were extremely similar, however, Light won. But in that last note Light sings, you can hear the regret in his voice. Like he somehow wishes he didn't have to kill L. This musical is so amazing. I'm really hoping it gets a production in America (or Canada, since that would be easier for me, a Canadian to see it haha) sometime soon. Because it sounds a little funny that it's based off of an anime, but as a giant theater nerd this concept album is better than some soundtracks from Broadway musicals (that is just my opinion). If it does get a full production, it better have Jeremy Jordan in it because he is perfect for Light (and he's also my favorite Broadway actor haha)

With complety despair and fear taking his body but trying himself to no break down "You will never get away!", you can hear the actor's voice cracking twice in this moment, like projecting L's feelings at that moment. He knows he failed, his calm and intelligent persona breaking down for this moment and this moment only. And then, Light triumphantly chuckles and aks sarcastically "Don't you know that you will die today?", you'll see he has a grin in his face, his hand going up, showing L the thing that's going on right now. And the note follows through, showing how he indeed, is just a few seconds lefts to do so. Idk man, this musical just hits hard.

I wish they would've been super consistent, except perhaps during Playing His Game, of all of Light's metaphors using elements of nature or laws of the universe, metaphysical concepts like justice; and all of L's metaphors involving man-made technology/systems. But Light calling L "just a pawn upon a board" would be more of an L line. But I'd be interested going through all of their lines to see just how consistent this is. Don't forget at the end L says "the message that it sends now" messages being a human construct, "exactly like a closing door" same thing.

This is definitely my favorite finale to a musical... ever. You can hear L realize exactly what's going to happen, and he knows he has to accept it. Because there's nothing he can do. And he finally realizes it. And then you hear Light gloat triumphantly, and then there's a slight note of... regret. It's perfectly written, and I love it. You really feel the desperation and crushing feeling of the impending doom of death. I especially love the line about the camera. It has fogged up, meaning that he's feeling emotion. And the darker pictures are that he isn't seeing things as clearly. Those emotions are twisting how he's looking at the world. This entire musical is an actor/writer's dream.

Honestly the whole scene after this songs is freaking amazing. In the Japanese production Light forces L to commit suicide, and then Ryuk writes Light’s name in the death note. The absolute tantrum that Light throws while singing a reprise is one of the most emotional things I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend checking it out

I love this song because it strongly reminds me of one of the most impressive scenes in Death Note, namely the scene where L "closes" his eyes for the only time. The method of repeating the one phrase in this song seems to be a very skillful way to express the scene of the eyes closing in phases, which was drawn over three frames in the original manga.

Y'know I always felt like in the anime when Light died it was a sort of mercy from Ryuk. He had been shot several times and was already dying, so when Ryuk wrote his name down I saw it as an easier end for Light. But in the musical Light had finally won, and everything had gone according to plan. I think that in the musical Ryuk killing light was more an act of revenge for Rem's death than an act of mercy. Light's blatant manipulation of Rem's feelings for Misa were more obvious in the musical, and I think Light's death was Ryuk's way of avenging her...just my thought tho

I love how this exchange differs so much from L’s final scenes with light in the anime. Here the two of them are belting and practically pouring their hearts out for one another, but the anime keeps its tension by what ISNT said. L alludes to the fact he knows Light is a liar and each go their separate ways understanding each other’s thoughts almost perfectly. Two different but really gratifying approaches ☠️📓💜

Everyone’s talking about the “had a minute more” line but not “I’ve always stayed a step ahead, but you were with me all the way” Like sure the minute more line shows that even though he’s glad it’s ending he’s devastated that it’s over, however, that other line just highlights exactly how Light felt about L. If Light hated L you would expect something like “you were always catching up” or “you were always right behind me”… but no. Instead we get “you were with me all the way”. All the way to the end of the game. You played well and never surrendered. I’m glad I won, but I’m sad you had to lose for me to get my way. Light highly respects L. In another world they might have been good friends.

Every few months I come back to this musical and just fall in love all over again with this song. It really is a perfect song to end the dynamic between L and light with both of them being neck and neck with each other for so long only for light to use someone’s love as a way to get L’s name and ultimately win. And even tho he “won” the game, it was mainly something to entertain Ryuk and the musical has him writing Light’s name in the death note right after the song. Even if Light won, in the end he still faced his demise.
