Dude this scene was so extra, and I am here for every moment of it! They didn't have to go that hard, but I loved it!

This reminds me of that Arlong scene where even he was surprised that Zoro was alive after receiving a massive wound from Mihawk.

Really interesting part of this fight, I remember the amount of questions people had when they seen this, like did Zoro die temporarily, did he overcome death, did he get taken to the underworld, will he get a power up, or did he imagine it. Would love to see this scene come into play sometime in the future, but considering that we are in the final part of One Piece I am not sure if we will.

My very person belief is this will tie back to his Ancestors who are from this land. Maybe they saved him from death.

Too many clowns writing “nothing was done with it” or “this never went anywhere” showing that they watched One Piece with their eyes closed. Oda literally has been throwing unanswered questions at us since the beginning of the series, only to come back to it much later.

I missed this ost. Been waiting for them to bring it back into the anime for months

Before this, Zoro was shown in normal color laying in a pool of his blood in his impact crater. We then get a grey color change and no swords are by him, he isn't laying in the pool of blood and crater anymore. Instead we get him laying by a dead tree, the sky is differnt and the grim reaper shows himself, I believe this was actually in hell. Zoro's eye has been glowing red since his fight with killer when he lost shisui. The reaper had the same glowing red eye and so did ryuma in thriller bark. We know ryuma had a missing eye from his bandages and from his parallel to zoro. What if that was the "curse of hell" that his cursed blade Shisui had. The curse could explain how Ryuma Zoro and the reaper all lost an eye. Also Zoro's finisher was named Dragon Damnation, a parallel to Ryuma feat of killing a dragon.

​@@s7evy His red eye either comes from observation haki or conqueror's and that can proved from WB, Roger and Luffy. Zoro's luck was just too strong that even cursed blades accepted him and in this moment, his body was experiencing near death from the long fight he had with king/kaido and the affects from the medicine. His body is heavily injured and very exhausted, don't forget when you're tired. You'll start to hallucinate things, so at this moment bro was just hallucinating

​@Stevy I don't think we can rule Shusui out. If "cursed blades" are simply blades with thier own will that are the best at killing, then someone weak willed would be overcome by the blade. Zoro however was directly gifted the sword by Ryuma, so maybe both their wills (Ryuma and Shusui') aligned allowing for Zoro to wield it without much drawback.

Zoro knew the kitetsu was cursed as soon as he touched it. I don't see why shusui would be different

Man that scenery.. it's like he actually passed into the underworld briefly and saw death for real.

the moment zoro stops breathing the scene changes to a gray tone simply amazing this scene.

I was waiting so long to see how they would animate this, and my God they didn't disappoint.

Zoro : "I'll become the king of hell." Grim reaper: "You called me, my g! Come on down to hell to sign the contract."

The way the reaper was formed with the left eye shining red has me guessing that being on death’s door is how Zoro will unlock his greatest power (and eye) in the future. The reaper is himself as the king of hell

Anyone notice when the reaper was taking form only his right eye was glowing red? The same eye that Zoro (the self proclaimed “King of Hell”) always has shut.

Pretty sure Zoro will get lost in the afterlife and end up back to the living world of One Peak

The reason death showed up is because Zoro has actually died a lot but he's always gotten lost on his way to the afterlife so he just ends up back in his body

Fewer things give me more joy than watching Rob have to sit there in silence everytime Zoro has a moment in this arc. Pure dopamine. 😂

Im a bit late but with recent chapters i think we get close to an explanaition, or at least can make some dots: Im talking about this whole Soul thing that gets more and more significant. Thru Brook and Big Mom we know souls exist. Vegapunk refers this when talking about the weight of a soul. Now we got the Seraphim and their lineage factor, which shows the connection to character and will. Now, the theorycrafting can begin. And id say we only need 1 more important information, something like souls have different weight, especially the souls of conquerors. Then we can connect the dots that Zoros soul, not ready to die yet, clinged to its body / isnt floating of due to its heavy will. Not able to move it but able to dodge the reapers cut. This could also be what happened when Luffy died before gear5. Imo its also a perfect reason to awaken at that time, the realisation that hes truely free, free from death and free from his body limitations as long as his soul stands strong. Then theres also the theorys that the Reaper is a manifestation of 1 of Zoros swords (most likely Enma) or Ashura. I find those rather weak as Zoro is familar with those and literally asked the Reaper "Who are you?!" And lastely the problem with this whole Soul theory: The existence of Brooks fruit and the time he took to return. This is an icky one and it comes down to Odas explaining, but Id guess this fruit is supposed to be special but Zoro and Luffy are so next level, the conquerored death without the fruit. And the time Brook took can be asigned to the lost nature of the Florian Triangle in which his body layed.

It’s interesting how the red eye of the reaper when it’s forming is the same that Zoro has closed. Maybe it’s a foreshadow of a future power up for him. They could’ve gave him 2 red eyes if not

*Death appears* Zoro: What happaned to the old man Zangetsu?! Death: What? Zoro: Sorry, wrong shounen.

My theory consists of several points: 1. Zoro's Transformation: Zoro proclaims himself "King of the Hell" and a grim reaper appears, sharing his missing right eye. Before the final attack against King, Zoro had a glowing red eye, suggesting a future transformation where he will open both eyes. An indication of this transformation is his fight against Killer, where he used a scythe, the weapon of the grim reaper. 2. Parallel with Rayleigh: Rayleigh, known as the Dark King, has a similar mark on his eye and is also a swordsman and vice-captain. This could mean that Rayleigh used to have a similar pact with the king of the hell. Since Rayleigh is still alive, this suggests that Zoro won't die, and the pact with the grim reaper is temporary. 3. Final Confrontation: Whitebeard predicted a final battle between light and darkness. Zoro will fight Blackbeard, representing darkness, while Luffy will take on Akainu, representing light, to avenge his brother. Whether these theories are true or not, I admire Oda's work that is One Piece, which often leaves me daydreaming.

The Grim Reaper came to Zoro because he failed to lead Zoro's soul to the afterlife because when in Thirllerbark the soul got lost and returned to his body. 😅

I noticed "Death's" left eye was glowing - also, I wonder if perhaps Mihawk saw "Death" at one point in his journey to become the greatest swordsman. It does sort of look like the muggy kingdom, but that could just be coincidence. Edit: Mentioned that because I noticed too the way the scythe swings is the same as Mihawk swung Yoru the first time they fought.
